Our previous work demonstrated that basophils regulate a suite of malaria phenotypes, including intestinal mastocytosis and permeability, the immune response to infection, gametocytemia, and parasite transmission to the malaria mosquito Anopheles stephensi. Given that activated basophils are primary sources of the regulatory cytokines IL-4 and IL-13, we sought to examine the contributions of these mediators to basophil-dependent phenotypes in malaria. We generated mice with basophils depleted for IL-4 and IL-13 (baso IL-4/IL-13 (-)) and genotype controls (baso IL-4/IL-13 (+)) by crossing mcpt8

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection of humans caused by a virus of the Flaviviridae family. In Malaysia the annual incidence risk of dengue fever for the period 2000 to 2019 ranged from 30 to 390 cases per 100,000. The aim of this paper was to identify spatial, temporal and spatio-temporal clusters of dengue fever in Peninsular Malaysia for the period 2015 to 2017. Counts of confirmed incident cases of dengue fever for each of the 86 districts of Peninsular Malaysia for the period 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2017 (inclusive) and district-level census data allowed us to calculate

PURPOSE: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a chronic infection of Brugia malayi, Brugia timori, and Wuchereria bancrofti and is a mosquito-transmitted disease. Mass drug administration (MDA) needs to be done annually to control LF and requires adherence of endemic populations to take medication properly. Maintaining high coverage of MDA is a challenge because the activity needs to be done in several years. This study would like to know the compliance of the community in taking medication during MDA periods in Pekalongan district using the health belief model (HBM) approach.

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a parasitic infection transmitted by mosquito vectors, and in Sub-Saharan Africa it is caused by the nematode Wuchereria bancrofti. The disease has been targeted for global elimination with the annual mass drug administration (MDA) strategy. Vector control is known to play an important complementary role to MDA in reducing the transmission of LF. The effects of an MDA and insecticide-treated net intervention implemented in an endemic area of southeastern Tanzania are reported here.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study assessing W. bancrofti circulating fil

BACKGROUND: Improving knowledge on local determinants of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is crucial to guide the development of relevant control strategies. This study aimed to identify individual and household level determinants of primary VL in 24 highly endemic villages of Tabarak Allah hospital's catchment area, Gedaref State, Sudan.
METHODS: From September 2012 to July 2013, in an unmatched case-control design, 198 patients with primary VL were compared to 801 controls free of VL symptoms and with a negative VL rapid test. Using random spatial sampling, controls were selected with a distribu

BACKGROUND: Rift Valley Fever (RVF) is a mosquito-borne viral zoonosis that was first isolated and characterized in 1931 in Kenya. RVF outbreaks have resulted in significant losses through human illness and deaths, high livestock abortions and deaths. This report provides an overview on epidemiology of RVF including ecology, molecular diversity spatiotemporal analysis, and predictive risk modeling.
METHODOLOGY: Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we systematically searched for relevant RVF publications in repositories of the World

Urban lymphatic filariasis (LF) has been listed among the challenges to the ongoing global efforts to eliminate LF. This is partly because the control strategies developed for rural areas - where most LF occurs - do not easily comply with human organization and behaviour in urban areas, and partly because the urban vectors thrive and proliferate in poorly planned urban settlements. This study investigated LF infection, disease and transmission in the medium-sized city of Tanga (approx. 300,000 inhabitants), Tanzania, after seven rounds of mass drug administration (MDA). Three representative si

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever, a mosquito-borne viral disease, is now the fastest spreading tropical disease globally. Previous studies indicate that climate and human behavior interact to influence dengue virus and vector (Aedes aegypti) population dynamics; however, the relative effects of these variables depends on local ecology and social context. We investigated the roles of climate and socio-ecological factors on Ae. aegypti population dynamics in Machala, a city in southern coastal Ecuador where dengue is hyper-endemic.
METHODS/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We studied two proximate urban localities w

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Insect growth regulators (IGRs) offer alternatives to conventional chemical larvicides that pose problem of resistance and environmental safety. However, only a limited number of IGRs have been approved for use in mosquito control. In the present study, two new formulations of the IGR diflubenzuron, 2 per cent granular (GR) and 2 per cent tablet (DT) were tested for its efficacy against Culex quinquefasciatus, in comparison to its 25 per cent wettable powder (WP) formulation.
METHODS: The WP, GR and DT formulations were tested in cesspits, street drains and abandoned …

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 infection increases the burden of malaria by increasing susceptibility to infection and decreasing the response to malarial treatment. HIV-1 has also been found to suppress the immune system and predispose to severe forms of malaria in adults. There is still a paucity of data on the association between HIV-1 infection and cerebral malaria in children. The aim of this study was to determine whether HIV-1 infection is a risk factor for cerebral malaria in children.
METHOD: We conducted an unmatched case-control study, in which 100 children with c

BACKGROUND: La Crosse encephalitis (LAC) is a mosquito-borne illness that primarily affects children. In 1997, an initial cluster of cases was identified by the regional pediatric referral center in East Tennessee. Since that time, public health officials, pediatric infectious disease physicians, infection control nurses, laboratory personnel, entomologists, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention consultants have collaborated to provide ongoing surveillance activities. Studies comparing LAC cases with non-LAC (no etiologic diagnosis) central nervous system infections have yielded no st

As less than twenty five per cent of persons suffering from malaria seek formal treatment in most of sub-Saharan Africa, Facility-based morbidity statistics are inadequate for monitoring malaria control programmes. This explorative study assessed whether a health centre equipped with a microscope and trained personnel could monitor malaria transmission within its catchment area. The study was conducted at Chemase Health Centre in Nandi District in Kenya, an area holoendemic for malaria with Anopheles gambiae as the main vector and Plasmodium falciparum as the commonest cause of malaria. In recent years, the closely related arboviruses West Nile virus (WNV) and Usutu virus (USUV) have spread farther north in Europe. The viruses often co-circulate and are maintained in a natural cycle between ornithophilic mosquitoes and birds. Humans and other mammals can become infected with these viruses, but are considered dead-end hosts. Both viruses can cause fever and encephalitis and may potentially be fatal to humans, birds, and horses. Usutu virus was discovered in blackbirds in Denmark for the first time in the fall of 2024 and again in 2025. Denmark is currently a European border co

This paper focuses on a combined SIR-SI epidemic model to evaluate the transmission dynamics of dengue fever, integrating the susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) framework for the human population with the susceptible-infected (SI) framework for mosquitoes. The model is formulated as a system of nonlinear differential equations and is further extended by incorporating fractional-order derivatives in the Caputo sense to capture memory effects in disease transmission. A thorough investigation of the disease-free and endemic equilibrium points is conducted, encompassing both local and global sta

The Dengue virus (DENV), primarily spread by Aedes aegypti and also by Aedes albopictus in some regions, poses significant global health risks. Alternative techniques are urgently needed because the current control mechanisms are insufficient to reduce the transmission of DENV. Introducing Wolbachia pipientis into Ae. aegypti inhibits DENV transmission, however, the underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood. Innate immune effector upregulation, the regulation of autophagy, and intracellular competition between Wolbachia and DENV for lipids are among the theories for the mechanism of in

Zika virus (ZIKV), a re-emerging mosquito-borne flavivirus, has caused outbreaks in Africa, Asia, the Pacific, and, more recently, in the Americas. ZIKV has been associated with the neurological autoimmune disorder Guillain-Barre syndrome in adults and congenital Zika syndrome in fetuses and infants, including microcephaly, spontaneous abortion, and intrauterine growth restriction. It is considered to be a major threat to global public health due to its unprecedented clinical impact on humans. Currently, there are no specific prophylactics or therapeutics available to prevent or treat ZIKV inf

Blood-feeding arthropods, particularly ticks and mosquitoes are considered the most important vectors of arthropod-borne diseases affecting humans and animals. While feeding on blood meals, arthropods are exposed to high levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) since heme and other blood components can induce oxidative stress. Different ROS have important roles in interactions among the pathogens, vectors, and hosts. ROS influence various metabolic processes of the arthropods and some have detrimental effects. In this review, we investigate the various roles of ROS in these arthropods, includin

Dengue and yellow fever are prevalent in Côte d'Ivoire and Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti (Linnaeus), (Diptera: Culicidae), is known as the main vector. We aimed to assess seasonal variation and spatial heterogeneity in the transmission of both arbovirus diseases in Abidjan. Entomological surveys targeting larvae of A. aegypti, were carried out between November 2015 and August 2016 covering the four climatic seasons including a cohort of 100 houses randomly selected in three neighbourhoods. A. aegypti was the predominant species (96.6%) of mosquitoes resulting from the rearing of harvested larvae,
