Altered dynamic regional homogeneity in patients with conduct disorder.

Conduct disorder (CD) is a psychiatric condition characterized by severe aggressive and antisocial behaviors. Prior neuroimaging work reported that CD is associated with abnormal resting-state local intrinsic brain activity (IBA). However, few studies detected the time-varying brain activity patterns in CD. In this study, eighteen adolescent patients with CD and 18 typically developing controls underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging scans. We then compared the dynamic characteristics of IBA by calculating the dynamic regional homogeneity (dReHo) through a sliding-window

The Bucket Test Improves Detection of Stroke in Patients With Acute Dizziness.

BACKGROUND: It is challenging to detect posterior circulation strokes in patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) with acute dizziness. The current approach uses a combinatorial head-impulse, nystagmus, and test-of-skew method and is sensitive enough to differentiate central causes from peripheral ones. However, it is difficult to perform and underused. Further, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain is not always available and can have low sensitivity for detecting posterior circulation strokes. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the feasibility and utility of the bucket test (BT),

ADHD Parent and Teacher Symptom Ratings: Differential Item Functioning across Gender, Age, Race, and Ethnicity.

Parent and teacher ratings of the two attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptom dimensions (i.e., inattention, hyperactivity-impulsivity) have been found to differ across child gender, age, race, and ethnicity. Group differences could be due to actual variation in symptomatic behaviors but also could be due to measurement items functioning differently based on child characteristics. This study extended prior investigations establishing measurement invariance at the symptom dimension and item levels, by examining possible measurement variance across child demographic characteristi

How to Deal With Temporal Relationships Between Biopsychosocial Variables: A Practical Guide to Time Series Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Longitudinal data allow for conclusions about the temporal order of events and interactional dynamics between several processes. The aim of this article is to provide a concise and pragmatic description of time series analyses (TSAs) of patient samples with numerous (or daily) repeated biological, behavioral, or psychological measurements. In addition, the article demonstrates how to implement the described analyses with the software R. METHODS: To illustrate the concrete application of the time series method, we use two case series of patients with anorexia nervosa. Upon awakening

Deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus and the temporal discounting of primary and secondary rewards.

Although deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus is an effective surgical treatment for Parkinson's disease, it may expose patients to non-motor side effects such as increased impulsivity and changes in decision-making behavior. Even if several studies have shown that stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus increases the incentive salience of food rewards in both humans and animals, temporal discounting for food rewards has never been investigated in patients who underwent STN-DBS. In this study, we measured inter-temporal choice after STN-DBS, using both primary and secondary rewards

Network Analysis of ADHD and ODD Symptoms: Novel Insights or Redundant Findings with the Latent Variable Model?

A latent variable model (LVM) and network analysis (NA) were applied to mother and father ratings of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms to determine if NA offers unique insights relative to the LVM. ADHD-inattention (IN), ADHD-hyperactivity/impulsivity (HI), and ODD symptoms along with academic competence behaviors (reading, arithmetic, and writing skills) were rated by mothers and fathers of Brazilian (n = 894), Thai (n = 2075), and United States (n = 817) children (Mage = 9.04, SD = 2.12, 49.5% females). LVM indicated that (1) the

Borderline Personality Disorder: Clinical Guidelines for Treatment.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is fundamentally a syndrome composed of symptoms (primarily of emotional dysregulation) and a number of true personality traits (such as inordinate anger, impulsivity, and a tendency to stress-related paranoid ideation). Whereas schizotypal personality disorder, with its cognitive peculiarities (ideas of reference, odd beliefs, eccentric speech), is closely linked as a genetic condition-"borderline" to the major condition schizophrenia-BPD is less closely linked to bipolar disorder. Some cases of BPD are linked genetically to and are in the "border" of bip

Craving for heroin: difference between methadone maintenance therapy patients with and without ADHD.

INTRODUCTION: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder persisting in adulthood in 40-60% of cases. Clinical and neuroimaging studies suggest that patients affected by both drug addiction and ADHD show higher rates of craving for drug than patients without ADHD. We designed a pilot open-label study to investigate the effects of ADHD on craving for heroin in methadone maintenance therapy patients. METHOD: Patients were recruited from outpatient facilities in an addiction treatment unit in the municipality of Alba, Italy. They were assessed using the Struc

Prevalence of Mental Illness in Adolescents and Adults With Congenital Heart Disease from the Colorado Congenital Heart Defect Surveillance System.

The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of the full spectrum of mental illness in adolescents (aged 11 to 17) and adults (aged 18 to 64) with congenital heart defects (CHDs) in the population-level Colorado Congenital Heart Disease Surveillance System. Further we sought to investigate whether severity of the defect, frequency of recent cardiac procedures or underlying genetic disorders influence these estimates. The cohort included patients in clinical care for CHDs between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2013, identified across multiple healthcare systems and insurance claims. O

[What motivates patients with atopic diseases to search the internet-a focus group study on expectations and demands].

BACKGROUND: People affected by allergies with mild-to-moderate symptoms are often not treated adequately, despite the availability of prevention and self-therapy measures. Given their good and quick accessibility when seeking information, evidence- and web-based services that are user-friendly may strengthen a more independent way of handling an allergy and may also increase health literacy. In order for such services to be found and read, developers and providers need to know about information needs, demands and users' behavior. OBJECTIVES: On which occasions does the target group search for

Gambling-related cognitive distortions predict level of function among US veterans seeking treatment for gambling disorders.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Gambling Disorder (GD) is characterized by recurrent gambling behavior that is associated with significant impairment and distress, high psychiatric comorbidities, and high functional disability. The military veteran population appears particularly susceptible to developing the disorder, but relatively little has been studied among this population. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the clinical psychopathologies and comorbidities of veterans seeking treatment for problem gambling and how problem gambling may impact functioning. METHODS: Treatment-se

Looming Threats and Animacy: Reduced Responsiveness in Youth with Disrupted Behavior Disorders.

Theoretical models have implicated amygdala dysfunction in the development of Disruptive Behavior Disorders (DBDs; Conduct Disorder/Oppositional Defiant Disorder). Amygdala dysfunction impacts valence evaluation/response selection and emotion attention in youth with DBDs, particularly in those with elevated callous-unemotional (CU) traits. However, amygdala responsiveness during social cognition and the responsiveness of the acute threat circuitry (amygdala/periaqueductal gray) in youth with DBDs have been less well-examined, particularly with reference to CU traits. 31 youth with DBDs and 27

Associations of adverse childhood experiences and suicidal behaviors in adulthood in a U.S. nationally representative sample.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a leading cause of death among adolescents and young adults. The current study extends the research linking adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) to suicidal behaviors by testing these associations using a nationally representative sample, assessing for suicide ideation and attempts in adulthood, controlling for established risk factors for suicidality, and measuring a broad array of ACEs. METHODS: The sample included 9,421 participants from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health who participated in four waves of assessments spanning 13 years. We examined l

Mind wandering during attention performance: Effects of ADHD-inattention symptomatology, negative mood, ruminative response style and working memory capacity.

OBJECTIVE: In adulthood, depressive mood is often comorbid with ADHD, but its role in ADHD-inattentiveness and especially relations with mind wandering remains to be elucidated. This study investigated the effects of laboratory-induced dysphoric mood on task-unrelated mind wandering and its consequences on cognitive task performance in college students with high (n = 46) or low (n = 44) ADHD-Inattention symptomatology and Hyperactivity/Impulsivity symptoms in the normal range. METHODS: These non-clinical high/low ADHD-Inattention symptom groups underwent negative or positive mood induction af

Food addiction and substance addiction in women: Common clinical characteristics.

Food addiction is characterized by poorly controlled intake of highly-palatable, calorically-dense, foods. While previous studies indicate that risk factors for food addiction are similar to substance use disorders (SUD), these studies have looked at food addiction and SUD in independent samples, limiting the ability to directly compare food addiction to SUD. The present study was conducted to assess rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, childhood and adult trauma exposure, as well as presence and severity of emotion dysregulation, in a sample of women (N = 229) who either

Associations between negative affect and binge/purge behaviors in women with anorexia nervosa: Considering the role of negative urgency.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence implicates negative affect in the occurrence of binge/purge behaviors, although the extent to which theoretically relevant individual difference variables may impact this association remains unclear. Negative urgency, the dispositional tendency to engage in rash action when experiencing negative affect, is a unique facet of impulsivity that may play a key role. Moreover, it was hypothesized that women with anorexia nervosa (AN) who are higher on measures of negative urgency, relative to those lower on negative urgency, would exhibit: 1) greater binge eating and purging freq

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Monetary Delay Discounting: A Meta-Analysis of Case-Control Studies.

BACKGROUND: A growing number of studies have investigated delay discounting, a behavioral economic index of impulsivity, and its relevance to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but with mixed findings. The current meta-analysis synthesizes the literature on the relationship between monetary delay discounting and ADHD in studies using case-control designs. Specifically, the objectives were: 1) to characterize the aggregated differences in monetary delay discounting between individuals with ADHD (cases) and controls in studies using categorical case-control designs; 2) to examine p

Improving substance use prevention efforts with executive function training.

BACKGROUND: Executive function (EF) includes emotional regulation, planning and decision-making, and behavioral impulse control. Improving youth substance use (SU) prevention by targeting EF poses challenges including determining whether specific sub-domains of EF are more associated with SU than others, whether EF is related to some types of SU more than others, and whether EF programs might be enhanced by inclusion of mindfulness training. METHODS: Data were drawn from two studies from the Pathways to Health project: a randomized controlled trial of 4th-6th graders and a cross-sectional pil

Medication risk-taking behavior in functional dyspepsia patients.

OBJECTIVES: No medication is approved for the treatment of functional dyspepsia (FD). The risks that patients would be willing to take to cure their FD symptoms are unknown. METHODS: FD patients (Rome III criteria) were mailed a questionnaire that assessed demographics, medication use, and prior medication adverse events. Scales to measure FD severity, quality of life, anxiety, depression, impulsiveness, and risk-taking behavior were included.
