BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Double sleeve (DS) lobectomy is a specialised lung-sparing operation which can be offered to patients with centrally located tumours, which can avoid pneumonectomy. The technique is historically performed via thoracotomy, but video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) and robotic-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) are gaining traction as minimally invasive alternatives. There are currently no reviews of these techniques. We aim to provide a narrative review of the techniques of DS lobectomy for lung cancer.
METHODS: We searched MEDLINE and PubMed for the following Medical

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Phrenic nerve resection is sometimes necessary during tumor removal when the nerve is infiltrated by malignancies. However, this can result in diaphragmatic paralysis and respiratory insufficiency. While mechanical ventilation and diaphragmatic pacing may temporarily support respiratory function, phrenic nerve reconstruction offers a potential long-term solution. Nevertheless, its use during tumor resection remains underreported. This review assesses current evidence on phrenic nerve reconstruction, focusing on surgical techniques, nerve graft selection, and the feasi

INTRODUCTION: Facial paralysis produces substantial functional and psychosocial impairment which facial reanimation surgery seeks to mitigate by restoring facial movement and improving symmetry. However, despite technical advances in nerve- and muscle-based reconstruction, perioperative evaluation and outcome assessment remain largely subjective and variably reproducible. Artificial intelligence (AI) and computer vision have emerged as tools to provide objective, scalable assessment across the facial reanimation care pathway.
METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched ex

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop a conceptual model of how patients experience and negotiate adherence to early mobilization after thoracic surgery.
METHODS: A qualitative study using constructivist grounded theory was conducted. Fifteen patients aged 15-79 years, between postoperative days 1 and 5 after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, were recruited from a tertiary hospital in China between May and July 2025. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were analyzed using initial and focused coding.
RESULTS: The analysis generated a Decisional Conflict Model. Patients faced two competi

Cerebral infarction after lung cancer surgery is a critical complication typically associated with thrombus formation in the long pulmonary vein stump, particularly after left upper lobectomy (LUL). Conversely, the risk of thrombus formation after left lower lobectomy (LLL) is low because of the anatomically shorter stump. A man in his 70s underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) left lower lobectomy for lung cancer. On postoperative day 1, the patient developed sudden right hemiplegia, global aphasia, and left conjugate deviation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an acut

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Lobectomy is the primary treatment for early-stage non-small cell lung cancer. However, pulmonary function declines postoperatively, presenting a significant challenge. This study investigated pulmonary function following lobectomy and compared these changes with predicted lung function based on the traditional segmental method, focusing on resected lobe-specific variability.
METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 419 patients who underwent lobectomies for NSCLC. Pulmonary function tests measuring forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one

BACKGROUND: Preoperative computed tomography (CT)-guided analysis of pulmonary nodule (PN) localization is performed to increase the success of resection surgery using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). This meta-analysis compared the relative efficacy and safety of soft hook-wire (SHW) and coil-based strategies for CT-guided PN localization.
METHODS: The databases of PubMed, Wanfang, and Cochrane Library were searched to acquire relevant studies published before September 2024 using the following search query: (((coil) AND ((((localization needle) OR (anchored needle)) OR (Sens-cur

INTRODUCTION: The patient showed an uneventful recovery post-surgery, underscoring the significance of early intervention in managing rare congenital anomalies. Bronchogenic cysts constitute 13-15 % of congenital cystic lung diseases and 6 % of childhood mediastinal masses. Arising from abnormal foregut development during embryogenesis, these cysts can be asymptomatic or cause serious complications, such as airway or vascular compression.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 10-day-old female newborn presented with a pulmonary cystic lesion in the left upper lung lobe, identified via routine antenatal ultras

BACKGROUND: Preoperative diagnosis of parathyroid cancer (PC) where possible allows for en-bloc resection of the tumour, which is associated with excellent prognosis. The rule of >3 (size of tumour larger than 3 cm; corrected calcium more than 3 mmol/L) as proposed by Schulte and Talat has a specificity of 95% in predicting malignancy in parathyroid neoplasms. We looked at the impact of rule of 3 in predicting malignancy and outcomes on intervention in a South Asian cohort.
METHODS: Patients who underwent parathyroid surgery between 2010 and 2023 at two tertiary referral centres were assessed

Background Lung resection is a complex surgical procedure performed in children to address various pulmonary conditions. The success of this surgical intervention in these patients lies in a multidisciplinary approach, with anesthetic management playing a critical role in ensuring the safety and efficacy of the procedure. Methods After approval by the local ethics committee, clinical data of 17 pediatric patients who underwent lung resection in our hospital from January 2012 to December 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. Results A total of 16 patients underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic s

INTRODUCTION: IgG4-related disease is a poorly understood immune disorder. Its features include tumour-like swelling of involved organs, lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate with IgG4 positive plasma cells. IgG4-related lung disease can manifest radiologically as various types of pulmonary abnormalities, including mass-like lesions and pleural effusion, and it may mimic malignant disease.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 76-year-old man was found to have a 4-mm ground glass opacity in the left lower lobe of the lung on follow-up chest CT after surgery for colon carcinoma. This lesion gradually became consolid

BACKGROUND Methylene blue (MB), which is often used perioperatively, is a potent monoamine oxidase inhibitor that can strongly block the clearance of extracellular serotonin. Granisetron, a serotonin receptor subtype 3 (5-HT3) antagonist, is an antiemetic used to prevent or treat postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). Through its antagonism, granisetron can increase the extracellular serotonin concentration. Serotonin syndrome is a potentially life-threatening condition resulting from a drug reaction that affects serotonin levels. This report is of a 50-year-old woman with postoperative ser

BACKGROUND: A mediastinal aberrant goiter is extremely rare, characterized by independence from the thyroid gland. This tumor most commonly develops in the anterior mediastinum and should be differentiated from a thymoma. Moreover, as mediastinal aberrant goiters frequently have a blood supply arising from the thoracic great vessels, preoperative diagnosis and evaluation of the feeding vessel are vital for safe surgery. Herein, we report a rare case of mediastinal aberrant goiter characterized by high radiodensity on non-enhanced computed tomography (CT).

We report a case of membranous nephropathy (MN) in a patient with tuberculosis infection and lung adenocarcinoma. A 50-year-old Filipino woman underwent a renal biopsy for the evaluation of proteinuria and hematuria. Immunofluorescence analysis revealed positive staining of IgG in the glomerular basement membrane and mesangial matrices, while electron microscopy demonstrated the presence of sub-epithelial deposits, suggesting MN. To screen for secondary causes of MN, we conducted a computed tomography (CT) scan of the chest and abdomen, which revealed a ground-glass opacity in the middle lobe

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH), asymptomatic in most cases, is a degenerative condition that commonly leads to anterior cervical osteophytes in most elderly patients. Clinically significant airway compression is rare. However, in some cases, the seemingly insignificant osteophytes could become a threat to airway management during intubation. Here we present a case of an 82-year-old man diagnosed as DISH and scheduled for cervical surgery. Radiographic imaging did not indicate the airway compromise. Preoperative airway assessment indicated modified Mallampati scoring of class I

BACKGROUND: Patients with impaired lung function or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are considered high-risk for intubated general anesthesia, which may preclude them from surgical treatment of their lung cancers. We evaluated the feasibility of non-intubated video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for the surgical management of lung cancer in patients with impaired pulmonary function.
METHODS: From August 2009 to June 2015, 28 patients with impaired lung function (preoperative forced expiratory volume in 1 second <70% of the predicted value) underwent non-intubated VATS usin

OBJECTIVE: Minimally invasive mitral valve repair may be associated with prolonged cardioplegic arrest times and ischemic reperfusion injury. Intravenous (propofol) and volatile (sevoflurane) anesthesia are used routinely during cardiac surgery and are thought to provide cardioprotection; however, the individual contribution of each regimen to cardioprotection is unknown. Therefore, the authors sought to compare the cardioprotective effects of propofol and sevoflurane anesthesia in patients undergoing minimally invasive mitral valve repair.
DESIGN: A single-center single-blind randomized cont

Concern over the changing bacteriology of empyema has led to numerous attempts to characterize the most common locoregional bacterial isolates. The purpose of this study is to better characterize the bacteriology and demographics in patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and hospital-acquired pneumonia requiring surgery for empyema. All patients diagnosed with empyema preoperatively and had either a video-assisted thoracoscopic or open decortication surgery from January 2010 to September 2015 were reviewed. Forty-seven patients were identified with a mean age of 54.7 ± 16.8 years (X

INTRODUCTION: The precise localization of fractured ribs represents one of the primary challenges of surgical rib fixation. Computed tomography (CT) provides the facture's general location, but it is difficult to use the imaging alone to properly place a surgical incision. We used electromagnetic navigation to identify the exact location of the fracture on the patient's skin.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 64-year-old man fell and suffered multiple left-sided nonunion rib fractures (4th to 9th). He was initially treated with a chest tube and analgesia, but he developed chronic pain from the injury.
