Syntheses, structures, and magnetic properties of two heterobridged mu-alkoxo-mu-7-azaindolate dicopper(II) complexes, [Cu(II)2(L-F)(mu-C7H5N2)] (1) and [Cu(II)2(L-H)(mu-C7H5N2)].CH3OH (2) (H3L-F = 1,3-bis(3-fluorosalicylideneamino)-2-propanol; H3L-H = 1,3-bis(salicylideneamino)-2-propanol) have been reported. The potential energy surface for gas-phase reactions of ammonium ion with alcohols was examined by ab initio and DFT methods. Transition structures for inversion (S(N)2) and retention (S(N)F) mechanisms were located for 2-propanol and exo-2-norbornanol. The S(N)F (retention) process was found to be 6-8 kcal/mol higher in energy than the inversion S(N)2 counterpart for the 2-propanol system. The retention process in the 2-exo-norbornanol/ammonium ion system was favored by 1.3 kcal/mol.

Mixtures of ethanol, 2-propanol and 2-butanol can be used as a cryoglue to mount vitrified biological specimens for ultrathin cryosectioning. Brought directly from room temperature to a cutting support at 140 K in the cold chamber of a cryoultramicrotome, these alcohols stiffen to a viscous and gluey consistency allowing the attachment or embedding of a vitreous biological sample. The mass hardens at lower temperatures fixing the sample well for microtomy. With ethanol: 2-propanol (2:3), samples are applied at 140 K and ultrathin cutting can be done at 115 K.
