Immune competence of splenic lymphocytes following graft-vs-host disease in mouse allogeneic radiation chimeras.

The abnormal immune response of long-term mouse allogeneic chimeras is reflected by qualitative deficiencies in either T or B lymphocytes. The present study was undertaken to determine if a relationship existed between the severity of graft-vs-host disease (GVHD) that these animals had experienced and a functional defect in either the T or B cell population. The in vitro PFC response of chimera spleen cells to sheep red blood cells (SRBC) was evaluated in the presence of normal T or B lymphocytes 4 to 8 months after marrow transplantation and well beyond the GVHD period. In an analysis of seve

Camellioside A, isolated from Camellia japonica flowers, attenuates UVA-induced production of MMP-1 in HaCaT keratinocytes via suppression of MAPK activation.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is responsible for various damages to the skin, collectively referred to as photoaging. A key UV-induced effect on the skin is excessive degradation of collagen and related structural abnormalities. Camellia japonica is a flowering plant with cosmeceutical properties. In the present study, Camellioside A (CMDA), a triterpene saponin, was investigated for its effects against UVA-induced photoaging in HaCaT keratinocytes. CMDA was analyzed to determine its attenuating effects against UVA-induced overproduction of the collagen degradation enzyme, matrix metalloproteinas

A Roberts Syndrome Individual With Differential Genotoxin Sensitivity and a DNA Damage Response Defect.

PURPOSE: Roberts syndrome (RBS) is a rare, recessively transmitted developmental disorder characterized by growth retardation, craniofacial abnormalities, and truncation of limbs. All affected individuals to date have mutations in the ESCO2 (establishment of cohesion 2) gene, a key regulator of the cohesin complex, which is involved in sister chromatid cohesion and DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair. Here we characterize DNA damage responses (DDRs) for the first time in an RBS-affected family. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Lymphoblastoid cell lines were established from an RBS family, including th

EMF and health.

Electric and magnetic fields are ubiquitous in the modern society, and concerns have been expressed regarding possible adverse effects of these exposures. This review covers epidemiologic research on health effects of exposures to static, extremely low-frequency (ELF), and radio frequency (RF) fields. Research on ELF fields has been performed for more than two decades, and the methodology and quality of studies have improved over time. Studies have consistently shown increased risk for childhood leukemia associated with ELF magnetic fields, whereas ELF fields most likely are not a risk factor

Technical management of a pregnant patient undergoing radiation therapy to the head and neck.

The fetal dose in a pregnant patient undergoing radiation therapy to the head and neck region was investigated. Implicit in this study was the design and evaluation of a shield used to minimize the fetal dose. To evaluate the fetal dose, a phantom was irradiated with the fields designed for this patient's therapy. The peripheral dose was measured for each field individually, both without and with a custom shield designed to be placed about the patient's abdominal and pelvic regions. The total dose at the location of the fetus over the course of this patient's radiation therapy was then estimat

COVID-19 and cancer risk arising from ionizing radiation exposure through CT scans: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The surge in the utilization of CT scans for COVID-19 diagnosis and monitoring during the pandemic is undeniable. This increase has brought to the forefront concerns about the potential long-term health consequences, especially radiation-induced cancer risk. This study aimed to quantify the potential cancer risk associated with CT scans performed for COVID-19 detection. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study data from a total of 561 patients, who were referred to the radiology center at Imam Hossein Hospital in Shahroud, was collected. CT scan reports were categorized into three g

Analysis of lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA Expression in the Troxerutin-Mediated Prevention of Radiation-Induced Lung Injury in Mice.

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced lung injury (RILI) is a critical factor that leads to pulmonary fibrosis and other diseases. LncRNAs and miRNAs contribute to normal tissue damage caused by ionizing radiation. Troxerutin offers protection against radiation; however, its underlying mechanism remains largely undetermined. METHODS: We established a model of RILI in mice pretreated with troxerutin. The lung tissue was extracted for RNA sequencing, and an RNA library was constructed. Next, we estimated the target miRNAs of differentially expressed (DE) lncRNAs, and the target mRNAs of DE miRNAs. Then

Primitive neuroectodermal tumour arising within low grade astrocytoma: transformation, de novo or radiation induced? Report of three cases and review of literature.

The transformation from low grade to aggressive astrocytoma is well known. However, the development of a completely different tumour such as a primitive neuroectodermal tumour (PNET) within a low grade astrocytoma (LGA) is rare. Only two cases have been reported to date. We present three cases and review the literature. One case was identified at presentation. A subsequent review of our histopathology database revealed two further cases. All three patients had histologically proven low-grade astrocytoma and received radiotherapy following biopsy. The tumour location was infratentorial in one a

Dynamic Chest Radiography: A New Perspective in Pulmonary Function Assessment.

Dynamic chest radiography (DCR) is an emerging functional X-ray imaging technique utilizing flat-panel detectors to capture time-resolved radiographic sequences of the entire thorax. By analyzing subtle respiration and cardiac-induced pixel value fluctuations, DCR enables noninvasive, quantitative assessment of pulmonary ventilation, perfusion, and diaphragmatic kinetics without contrast agents. Key applications include evaluating regional ventilation heterogeneity in obstructive diseases (e.g., chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma), detecting perfusion defects in pulmonary embolism,

Pathomechanisms and therapeutic opportunities in radiation-induced heart disease: from bench to bedside.

Cancer management has undergone significant improvements, which led to increased long-term survival rates among cancer patients. Radiotherapy (RT) has an important role in the treatment of thoracic tumors, including breast, lung, and esophageal cancer, or Hodgkin's lymphoma. RT aims to kill tumor cells; however, it may have deleterious side effects on the surrounding normal tissues. The syndrome of unwanted cardiovascular adverse effects of thoracic RT is termed radiation-induced heart disease (RIHD), and the risk of developing RIHD is a critical concern in current oncology practice. Premature

Current cytogenetic methods for detecting exposure and effects of mutagens and carcinogens.

Most mutagens and genotoxic carcinogens are efficient inducers of chromosomal alterations in exposed cells. Two important classes of aberrations, namely structural and numerical, are recognized and both types of aberrations are associated with congenital abnormalities and neoplasia in humans. These alterations can be easily detected and quantified in human peripheral blood lymphocytes. Conventional staining techniques can be used to detect these aberrations; this technique was used to estimate absorbed dose in the case of a radiation accident in Goiania, Brazil. A recently introduced fluoresce

Intensification of ultraviolet-induced dermal damage by infrared radiation.

Abnormal dermal deposition of elastic fibers is the earliest and most striking effect of prolonged sun exposure (solar elastosis). The hyperplastic fibers are usually ascribed to ultraviolet (UV) rays. Nonetheless, other portions of the solar spectrum may play contributing roles. Heat, for example, enhances experimental UV tumorigenesis. Heat induces erythema ab igne in which the structural alterations resemble those of actinically damaged skin, including the development of premaligant and malignant lesions. In regions of high insulation, infrared radiation (IR) is a constant companion of UV.

A Higher Mean Heart Radiation Dose Induces Higher Frequency of Multiple Cardiac Changes.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Radiotherapy (RT) induces late changes in all cardiac structures. Most studies of early changes focus on individual parameters. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data from eighty early-stage breast cancer patients at baseline, post-RT and three-year follow-up visit were assessed prospectively. Changes in ten cardiac parameters were collected including electrocardiogram (ECG), echocardiography, and biomarkers. A percentage of abnormal changes was calculated. RESULTS: The mean heart radiation dose (Dmean) was independently associated with the increased incidence of changes post-RT (β=0.403

Cytogenetic dosimetry by micronucleus assay using peripheral blood cells is modified by thyroid hormones.

Cytokinesis-block micronucleus (CBMN) assay is a convenient and easy method of radiation biodosimetry that uses peripheral blood (PB) cells. However, for micronuclei (MN) frequency induced by ionising radiation, a dose-response relationship in abnormal condition, such as in cancer patients, has not been assessed. To clarify the difference between the dose-response curve generated by the CBMN assay in conditions when thyroid hormone levels were normal and during thyroid hormone withdrawal (THW) prior to (131)I treatment, 12 thyroid cancer patients who underwent thyroidectomy were studied. The c

Hydrochlorothiazide as an Underrecognized Cause of Acute Pancreatitis: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Acute pancreatitis is a common inflammatory disorder of the pancreas. While commonly caused by gallstones, alcohol use, and idiopathic causes, drug-induced acute pancreatitis (DIAP) is an often overlooked etiology that demands careful medication review and clinical vigilance. This case report describes a 72-year-old male patient with a history of hypertension and coronary artery disease who presented with severe epigastric pain radiating to the back, elevated lipase levels, and imaging findings consistent with acute pancreatitis. After excluding common causes such as gallstones, alcohol use, a
