Deer stand fatalities in Kentucky: two cases of reverse suspension and blunt force trauma.

Hunting many types of wild game is an avidly pursued outdoor activity that attracts all ages and both genders at various times of the year. Deer hunting is a popular sport in many regions of North America. A variety of weapons are used in the hunting, trapping, and killing of game. As a variety of different modalities are used, myriad types of injuries unique to the type of hunting can occur. Most deer hunting-related fatalities identified at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Kentucky are accidental firearm injuries. Less commonly encountered are fatalities resulting from elevation o

Infection risks in hospital staff from blood: hazardous injury rates and acceptance of hepatitis B immunization.

A questionnaire survey of 1800 clinical health care staff was undertaken to determine hazardous injury rates and uptake of hepatitis B vaccination. The overall sharps injury rate was 116 injuries per 100 staff per year. Full-time doctors had the highest rates. Surgical procedures were the commonest cause of accidental injury (58 per cent) and 30 per cent of all sharps injuries were attributable to careless handling. Injuries caused by bites and scratches from patients occurred mainly in nurses and auxilliaries in psychiatric and geriatric wards (115/100 staff per year). Twenty-four per cent of

An accidental decapitation resulting from head protruding out of bus.

Decapitation is the separation of the head from the neck. Accidental decapitation is rare, and very few cases are cited in the literature. In this case, the victim was asleep during an overnight trip with her head sticking out of the window, and she was decapitated by a truck travelling in the opposite direction. Lack of security grilles on windows, high-speed driving, narrow roads and night travel were contributing factors. This case is presented for its rarity and pattern of injuries during the fatal mishap and to consider possible preventive measures.

Pneumoperitoneum complicated pneumomediastinum causing cardiovascular deterioration in a low-body-weight premature infant during laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication.

Due to smaller incisions, fewer wound injuries, and a shorter time of recovery, laparoscopic procedures are becoming increasingly popular in pediatric surgery, but the safety of their application in low-body-weight or premature infants should be a major concern. Here we present a case report of a 3-month-old premature infant, who developed a sudden change of hemodynamic instability while undergoing a laparoscopic Nissen's fundoplication for gastroesophageal reflex disease. This was thought to result from an accidental passage of massive insufflation of carbon dioxide gas across the diaphragm,

Popliteal artery injury following total knee arthroplasty due to a very rare variant of the popliteal artery: A case report of an unusual complication.

Variations of the popliteal artery are uncommon but often associated with popliteal artery injuries. Thus, in cases of popliteal artery injury, popliteal artery variations should be one of the primary differential diagnoses. Due to the poor prognosis that may result in amputation or mortality, such injuries are serious complications that can lead to medical malpractice cases. This report presents a case of a 77-year-old woman with bilateral knee osteoarthritis who sustained a popliteal artery injury during total knee arthroplasty due to the highly uncommon type II-C popliteal artery variation.

A forensic evaluation of impalement injuries.

Impalement injuries transfix a victim in an inescapable or helpless position. A study was undertaken at Forensic Science SA from 2002 to 2016 of all impalement deaths. There were six vehicle accidents (M:F=5:1; age 14-67 years, average age 38.5 years) involving impalements with a tree branch ( n=2; groin and chest), a metal pipe ( n=2; leg and head), a metal bridge railing (groin) and a metal fence post (chest). Two cases (both males, aged 47 and 18 years) had slipped on fences/gates, with impalements of the ankle and groin. A case of suicide (male, aged 80 years) was impaled through the head

Open globe and penetrating eyelid injuries from fish hooks.

BACKGROUND: A few case reports have described accidental eye injuries caused by fish hooks. The severity of ocular injuries is dependent on the involved ocular structures. Severe ocular injuries due to fish hooks are rare. We describe open globe and penetrating eyelid injuries from fish hooks at the Baltic Sea. METHODS: Nine patients with traumatic ocular injuries caused by fish hooks were included. The following parameters were evaluated: severity of injury, best corrected visual acuity at admission and last follow-up, and surgical treatment. RESULTS: All nine patients were male. Age ranged

Prolonged critical avalanche burial for nearly 23 h with severe hypothermia and severe frostbite with good recovery: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Accidental hypothermia with severe frostbite is a rare combination of injuries with a high risk for long-term sequelae. There are widely accepted recommendations for the management of avalanche victims and for frostbite treatment, but no recommendation exists for the treatment of frostbite in severe hypothermic patients, specifically for the management of hypothermic avalanche victims presenting with frostbite. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a previously healthy, 53-year-old male skier who was critically buried by an avalanche at 2300 m of altitude at an ambient temperatu

Accidental Falls in Patients with Hyperkinetic Movement Disorders: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: The significance of falls and their repercussions in Parkinson's disease has been extensively researched. However, despite potentially serious effects on health and quality of life and negative impact on the healthcare system, there is not a sufficient understanding of the role of falls in hyperkinetic movement disorders (HKMDs). This review aims to provide an overview of the prevalence of falls, injuries, and preventive measures in the most common HKMDs. METHODS: Studies up to May 1, 2022 were searched in PubMed using Medical Subjects Headings of relatively prevalent HKMDs associ
