The use of cyclic voltammetry for wine analysis: determination of polyphenols and free sulfur dioxide.

The use of cyclic voltammetry to characterize wines and wine polyphenols in a pH 3.3 model wine solution has been extended to take into account the effects of sulfur dioxide and polyphenol adsorption processes. A good correlation was obtained between a cyclic voltammetric measure, based upon the response produced before and after acetaldehyde additions, and the concentration of free sulfur dioxide in eight white wines (r(2)=0.974). By the addition of acetaldehyde to the white wines, an important new step in the methodology, the area under the anodic scan in the potential range from -100 to 120…

Acyl, N-protected alpha-aminoacyl, and peptidyl derivatives as prodrug forms of the alcohol deterrent agent cyanamide.

Cyanamide (H2NC identical to N), a potent aldehyde dehydrogenase (AlDH) inhibitor that is used therapeutically as an alcohol deterrent agent … tamyl-L-phenylalanylcyanamide (20). All of these prodrugs of cyanamide raised ethanol-derived blood acetaldehyde levels in rats significantly over controls 3 h after ip drug administration, and some of these were still capable of elevating blood acetaldehyde 16 h post drug administration. A selected group of cyanamide prodrugs were also evaluated by the oral r …

Using RNA-Stable isotope probing to investigate methane oxidation metabolites and active microbial communities in methane oxidation coupled to denitrification.

The active denitrifying communities performing methane oxidation coupled to denitrification (MOD) were investigated using samples from an aerobic reactor (∼20% O2 and 2% CH4) and a microaerobic reactor (2% O2, 2% CH4) undertaking denitrification. The methane oxidation metabolites excreted in the reactors were acetate, methanol, formate and acetaldehyde. Using anaerobic batch experiments supplemented with exogenously supplied 13C-labelled metabolites, the active denitrifying bacteria were identified using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing and RNA-stable isotope probing (RNA-SIP). With the aerobic re…

Opiate antagonist nalmefene inhibits ethanol-induced flushing in Asians: a preliminary study.

Ethanol concentrations of flushers and nonflushers were similar. Mean (+/- SEM) plasma acetaldehyde concentrations of flushers (28.2 +/- 11.8 microM) were significantly greater than nonflushers (1.4 +/- 0.5 microM) following ethanol ingestion (p less than 0.001). Ethanol alone always induced a significant rise in facial skin temperature [mean area …

Ethanol and its Nonoxidative Metabolites Promote Acute Liver Injury by Inducing ER Stress, Adipocyte Death, and Lipolysis.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Binge drinking in patients with metabolic syndrome accelerates the development of alcohol-associated liver disease. Howev … -fed mice, while disruption of the Aldh2 gene did not affect such hepatic injury despite high blood acetaldehyde levels. Mechanistic studies showed that alcohol, not acetaldehyde, promoted hepatic ER stress, fatty acid synthesis, and increased adipocyte death and lipolysis, contributing to acute liver injury. Increased serum fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEEs), wh …

Urinary ethylglucuronide assessment in patients treated with disulfiram: a tool to improve verification of abstention and safety.

AIM: Disulfiram has been shown to be efficacious and safe in the treatment of alcohol relapse prevention. However, drinking alcohol while taking disulfiram can be harmful because of the resulting alcohol-disulfiram reaction/acetaldehyde reaction. Alcohol consumption of patients receiving a low disulfiram dose or low alcohol consumption in normal disulfiram dose can result in subclinical alcohol-disulfiram reactions. This undermines the learning of alcohol-associated punishment, might increase the risk to raise alcohol consumption, and can result in chronic acetaldehyde exposure, which has carc…

Emission of alcohols and carbonyl compounds from a spark ignition engine. Influence of fuel and air/fuel equivalence ratio.

A spark ignition engine was used to study the impact of fuel composition and of the air/fuel equivalence (lambda) ratio on exhaust emissions … nly from the respective fuel compounds. Exhaust formaldehyde is mainly produced from fuel methanol, acetaldehyde from fuel ethanol, and propionaldehyde from straight-chain hydrocarbons. Exhaust acroleine comes from fuel 1-hexene, acetone from 2-propanol, n-hexane, n-octane, isooctane, and MTBE. Exhaust crotonaldehyde comes from fuel 1-hexene, cyclohexane, n-he …

Oxidative modification of proteins in chronic alcoholics.

Oxidative modification of proteins is of great importance because of their biological role in transport, enzyme activity, immune response an … ly alcohol intake and plasma levels of carbonyl proteins. The incubation of fresh human plasma with acetaldehyde, but not with ethanol, led to a significant increase of the carbonyl protein production. Cutaneous reactions to lower aliphatic alcohols before and during disulfiram therapy.

Cutaneous reactions to ethyl alcohol (ethanol), N-propyl alcohol (1-propanol), isopropyl alcohol (2-propanol), and acetaldehyde were evaluated in a control group and in patients before and while they were receiving disulfiram therapy. Local cutaneous erythema was observed from patch tests with ethyl alcohol, N-propyl alcohol, and isopropyl alcohol in hydrated skin, and from acetaldehyde in dry skin. Since reactions noted from topically applied alcohols before and while the patients were receiving disulfiram therapy were not statistically different, a localized disulfiram-alcohol reaction is un…

Risk of overestimating odor control performance with the removal efficiency of a single odorant: Odorant interactions during the chemical absorption.

Odor is a serious issue for municipal solid waste treatment process, and chemical absorption is a common technology for odor control. Interactions among odorants will influence the performance of chemical absorption, and they are still not fully understood. This work took the common and important odorants, including hydrogen sulfide (H2S), methanethiol, propanethiol and acetaldehyde, as examples, to investigate the removal performance of mixed odorants by sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) solution at different concentrations, and interactions among the odorants. The absorption experiments were condu…

Reduction of aldehydes and hydrogen cyanide yields in mainstream cigarette smoke using an amine functionalised ion exchange resin.

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking is a well recognized cause of diseases such as lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cardiovascular disease. Of the more than 5000 identified species in cigarette smoke, at least 150 have toxicological activity. For example, formaldehyde and acetaldehyde have been assigned as Group 1 and Group 2B carcinogens by IARC, and hydrogen cyanide has been identified as a respiratory and cardiovascular toxicant. Active carbon has been shown to be an effective material for the physical adsorption of many of the smoke volatile species. However, physical adsor…

Coexposure to Inhaled Aldehydes or Carbon Dioxide Enhances the Carcinogenic Properties of the Tobacco-Specific Nitrosamine 4-Methylnitrosamino-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone in the A/J Mouse Lung.

Tobacco smoke is a complex mixture of chemicals, many of which are toxic and carcinogenic. Hazard assessments of tobacco smoke exposure have predominantly focused on either single chemical exposures or the more complex mixtures of tobacco smoke or its fractions. There are fewer studies exploring interactions between specific tobacco smoke chemicals. Aldehydes such as formaldehyde and acetaldehyde were hypothesized to enhance the carcinogenic properties of the human carcinogen, 4-methylnitrosamino-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) through a variety of mechanisms. This hypothesis was tested in the …
