Jeune's syndrome is an autosomal-recessive condition characterized by multiple organ abnormalities, the most severe of which affect the skeleton, kidneys, and eyes. Severe respiratory insufficiency frequently results in death in infancy, but several patients have been reported to survive to adulthood. For this reason the prognosis for patients with ocular abnormalities is of interest in counseling families. We have designed, constructed and tested an adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscope (AOSLO) using a bimorph mirror. The simulated AOSLO system achieves diffraction-limited criterion through all the raster scanning fields (6.4 mm pupil, 3° × 3° on pupil). The bimorph mirror-based AOSLO corrected ocular aberrations in model eyes to less than 0.1 μm RMS wavefront error with a closed-loop bandwidth of a few Hz. Facilitated with a bimorph mirror at a stroke of ±15 μm with 35 elements and an aperture of 20 mm, the new AOSLO system has a size only half that of the first-generation AOSLO system.

Adapting to blurred or sharpened images alters the perceived focus of subsequently viewed images. We examined whether these adaptation effects could arise from actual sphero-cylindrical refractive errors, by testing aftereffects in images simulating second-order astigmatism. PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between night myopia and the occurrence of night-time motor vehicle accidents in a group of professional drivers.
METHODS: We examined 136 professional drivers. Refraction was determined in full illumination (100 cd/m2) and after sitting in darkness for 5 mins. The change in refraction, indicative of night myopia, was correlated with the number of motor vehicle accidents in which each driver was involved (detailed in their personal files) and with the results of a visual complaints questionnaire.

Static and dynamic aspects of the near pupil response were studied in human subjects in the age range when accommodative amplitude steadily declines. Dynamic accommodative and pupillary responses to step stimuli were recorded in 66 subjects (ages: 14-45 years). Exponential fits to data provided amplitude, peak velocity and time constants. Accommodative amplitude decreased linearly with age (p < 0.05). Pupil constriction per diopter of accommodative response increased exponentially with age (p < 0.05). Behavioral measurements on the water maze show night blindness in albino mice but cortical recordings show no difference between pigmented and congenic albino mice. Consequently we have measured the absolute threshold in albino and pigmented mice using an operant method. The estimated threshold value is -5.3 log cd/m2 for albino mice and -5.5 log cd/m2 for the pigmented mice. We conclude that threshold values depend on the behavioral paradigm used. To further elucidate possible central plastic adaptive processes during the recovery from a unilateral peripheral vestibular lesion, we investigated vestibular functions in humans over a period of 2 months after an acute unilateral labyrinthine lesion. A unilateral peripheral vestibular lesion creates both a tonic imbalance that causes spontaneous nystagmus and a decrease and directional asymmetry of dynamic vestibular responses. We establish that the tonic imbalance expressed by the spontaneous nystagmus rapidly decreased (similar to other species), whether the lesion remained complete or not

Vestibular, oculomotor and respiratory tests were performed on 32 patients after whiplash injury caused by a rear-end car collision. Oculomotor functions were generally normal. The cervico-ocular reflex was usually absent or displayed the low gain typical of normal subjects. There was no nystagmic response to static neck torsion. The vestibulo-ocular reflex showed vestibular hyperreactivity (VH) in a significantly large number of cases (n = 17; 53%). PURPOSE: To examine the natural adaptive course of ocular motor system in unilateral abducens nerve palsy while addressing the scarce literature on saccade dynamics and natural adaptation.
