Adaptation to prism-induced heterophoria.

Measurements of the way the oculomotor system adapts to prism-induced heterophorias have been made in eight normal subjects. Adaptation to 2 delta vertically and, on separate occasions, to 6 delta horizontally was found to be substantially completed after only 2-3 minutes of binocular visual experience. The form of the adaptive process for distant targets was asymmetrical in the horizontal meridian, being faster after the insertion of 6 delta base-out than for 6 delta base-in. This asymmetry largely disappeared for near vision.

Effects of Chronic High-Altitude Hypoxia on Attention Networks and Cardiovascular Regulation in Indigenous High-Altitude Primary School Students.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the effects of chronic high-altitude hypoxic exposure on attention networks in indigenous primary school students, integrating cardiovascular indices to explore underlying physiological mechanisms. METHODS: Three real-world altitude groups were established: low (2,200 m), mid (3,200 m), and high (4,200 m). Cardiovascular function was assessed via systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and heart rate. Attentional performance was evaluated using the Attention Network Test (ANT), which provides measures of alerting, orienting, and executive control eff

Aquatic and terrestrial heart rates in fur seals: evidence for delayed metabolic processing.

A seal's heart rate is affected by their physiological adaptation to aquatic and terrestrial environments. At-sea, heart rate during dive bouts cycles between bradycardia during dives and tachycardia for oxygen replenishment on the sea-surface. While onshore, heart rate reflects apnoea and eupnoea. Intriguingly, complete sea-and-onshore heart rate traces and any relationship between sea and subsequent onshore heart rate, including any immediate or delayed physiological adaptation, remain unexamined. In this study, sea-and-onshore heart rate traces from female Cape fur seals (Arctocephalus pusi

The price of survival: comparative adaptation to high altitudes between yaks and cattle.

The yak (Bos grunniens) serves as an exceptional model for studying high-altitude adaptation mechanisms due to its evolutionary success in the hypoxic environment of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Previous research has largely focused on genetic and physiological traits of yaks; however, the interactions between rumen microbiota and host physiology under hypoxic conditions are poorly understood. As the largest digestive organ in ruminants, the rumen and its microbiota play a central role in digestion and host nutrition. In this study, a comparative analysis of digestive metabolism and rumen microb

Targeting endoplasmic reticulum stress and nitroso-redox imbalance in cancer progression.

Therapy-resistant cancers exploit cellular stress programs to survive. Evidence from neuroendocrine prostate cancer reveals that the loss of nitric oxide-dependent redox signaling amplifies endoplasmic reticulum stress and lineage plasticity. Restoring physiological nitroso-redox balance may reprogram stress adaptation and expose new vulnerabilities in aggressive cancers.

Adaptive Variation Amid High Gene Flow Across a Broad Latitudinal Gradient in the Reef-Building Honeycomb Worm, Sabellaria alveolata.

Climate change is already altering, and will continue to reshape, the persistence and spatial structure of marine populations. Understanding metapopulation connectivity and local adaptation is therefore critical for identifying both vulnerable populations and those with adaptive resilience. We applied a seascape genomics approach to investigate connectivity patterns and adaptive responses in the honeycomb worm, Sabellaria alveolata-an intertidal ecosystem engineer that supports high biodiversity and provides essential ecological functions. A total of 286 individuals from 17 sites spanning the

Hydrogen sulfide and nitric oxide regulate the adaptation to iron deficiency through affecting Fe homeostasis and thiol redox modification in Glycine max seedlings.

Iron (Fe) is a vital microelement required for the growth and development of plants. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and nitric oxide (NO), as messenger molecules, participated in the regulation of plant physiological processes. Here, we studied the interaction effects of H2S and NO on the adaptation to Fe deficiency in Glycine max L. Physiological, biochemical and molecular approaches were conducted to analyze the role of H2S and NO in regulating the adaptation to Fe deficiency in soybean. We found that H2S and NO had obvious rescuing function on the Fe deficiency-induced the plant growth inhibition,

Integrated Physiological and Transcriptomic Analyses of Saccharomyces cerevisiae Under Syringaldehyde Stress.

Syringaldehyde is a major lignin-derived inhibitor in lignocellulosic hydrolysates that affects growth, metabolism, and ethanol fermentation in Saccharomyces cerevisiae; however, the mechanisms underlying its toxicity and cellular adaptation remain poorly understood. In this study, fermentation analysis, physiological characterization, and transcriptomic profiling were integrated to investigate the response of S. cerevisiae to syringaldehyde stress. Syringaldehyde inhibited yeast growth and ethanol fermentation in a concentration-dependent manner. At 1.4 g/L, it caused only a minor decrease in

Transcriptome analysis reveals physiological responses in liver tissues of Epinephelus cyanopodus under acute hypoxic stress.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) in aquatic ecosystems plays a pivotal role in fish farming, serving as a critical determinant for the sustainable development of aquaculture practices. When fish suffer hypoxic stress, they undergo a cascade of physiological adaptations. In this study, healthy E. cyanopodus were subjected to experimental treatments under normoxic (6.0 ± 0.05 mg/L) and hypoxic (1.6 ± 0.05 mg/L) conditions for 1 (H1), 3 (H3), 6 (H6), and 9 (H9) h to evaluate physiological responses. Liver RNA-seq analysis identified 6152 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the control group (H0) a

A hybrid reaction-diffusion and mechanical stimulus model for mandibular bone remodeling under chewing and vibratory loading.

Bone remodeling in the mandible is governed by the interplay between local mechanical loads, cellular population dynamics, and overload-induced resorption. While mastication is the primary physiological driver of mandibular adaptation, low-magnitude vibration has emerged as a promising noninvasive adjunct to enhance peri-implant bone stability. However, the mechanistic interaction between vibration and chewing-induced stimuli remains insufficiently clarified. This study presents a hybrid mechanobiological model that integrates a reaction-diffusion formulation for osteoblast, osteoclast, and med

Integrative genotype-environment association and single-cell transcriptomic analyses identify candidate mechanisms of environmental adaptation in pigs.

As one of the earliest domesticated and most globally ubiquitous livestock, pigs (Sus scrofa) have undergone profound environmental adaptation while following human expansion across diverse bioclimatic zones. Despite their evolutionary significance, the genomic mechanisms enabling pigs to thrive in disparate ecological settings remain poorly understood. Here, we present a comprehensive global analysis using a dataset of 1,151 pig genome sequences representing 146 distinct populations. By integrating three complementary genotype-environment association (GEA) frameworks including Redundancy Anal

Comprehensive visceral transcriptome profiling of three pig breeds along altitudinal gradients in Yunnan.

High-altitude hypoxia acclimatization requires comprehensive physiological regulation in highland immigrants, yet the genetic mechanisms remain unclear. Yunnan's vertical zoning with pig breeds distributed across varying elevations provides an excellent model for investigating hypoxic adaptation. Here, we examined three indigenous Yunnan pig breeds: Diannan small-ear pigs (DSE, 500 m), Baoshan pigs (BS, 1500 m), and Diqing Tibetan pigs (DT, 3200 m). Using PacBio Iso-Seq, we obtained comprehensive full-length transcriptomes from five tissues (heart, kidney, liver, lung, and spleen), identifying

Application Prospects of Alginate Oligosaccharides in Regulating Maize Stress Tolerance: A Review.

Maize (Zea mays L.) plays an irreplaceable role in food, feed, and energy security. However, abiotic stresses, including drought, high temperature, salinity, and waterlogging, driven by climate warming, cause yield losses of 20-30% of global maize production every year, posing a serious threat to global food security and human development. Traditional approaches such as genetic improvement, agronomic optimization, and chemical regulation struggle to address the multiple stresses affecting maize. Alginate oligosaccharides (AOSs)-linear oligosaccharides with degrees of polymerization of 2-20-can

Enviromics and Abiotic Enviromics: Enhancing Stress Biology and Plant Resilience Breeding.

Crop breeding faces mounting challenges from climate change, population growth, and shrinking farmland. While management and genetic improvement have contributed to yield gains, sustainable agriculture demands continuous progress to address local and future environmental stresses. Approximately 60% of past yield increases are attributed to improved abiotic stress resilience, yet further breeding advances are constrained by the complexity of environmental factors, which often co-occur dynamically within farming systems. Enviromics-an emerging field dedicated to high-throughput environmental cha
