A Contemporary Review of Molecular Therapeutic Targets for Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma.

ACC is a rare malignant tumor of the salivary glands. In this contemporary review, we explore advances in identification of targetable alterations and clinical trials testing these druggable targets. A search of relevant articles and abstracts from national meetings and three databases, including PubMed, Medline, and Web of Science, was performed. Following keyword search analysis and double peer review of abstracts to ensure appropriate fit, a total of 55 manuscripts were included in this review detailing advances in molecular targets for ACC. The most researched pathway associated with ACC i

Health-Related Quality of Life Assessed in Children with Adenoid Hypertrophy.

INTRODUCTION: The quality of life issue began to be earnestly studied in the second half of the 20th century. It had originally been used as a criterion for measuring levels of human development in the USA and Western Europe. At first, only objective parameters were assessed, such as material goods; however, later, subjective and non-material parameters were added, such as health, freedom, and happiness. Over time, more and more attention has been paid to the subjective parameters regarding any quality of life assessment. Adenoids are physiological clusters of lymphoid tissue included in Walde…

Automated Radiographic Evaluation of Adenoid Hypertrophy Based on VGG-Lite.

Adenoid hypertrophy is a pathological hyperplasia of the adenoids, which may cause snoring and apnea, as well as impede breathing during sleep. The lateral cephalogram is commonly used by dentists to screen for adenoid hypertrophy, but it is tedious and time-consuming to measure the ratio of adenoid width to nasopharyngeal width for adenoid assessment. The purpose of this study was to develop a screening tool to automatically evaluate adenoid hypertrophy from lateral cephalograms using deep learning. We proposed the deep learning model VGG-Lite, using the largest data set (1,023 X-ray images) …

Tissue microbiota in nasopharyngeal adenoid and its association with pneumococcal carriage.

The microbial colonization in the nasopharynx is a prerequisite for the onset of infectious diseases. For successful infection, pathogens should overcome host defenses as well as compete effectively with the resident microbiota. Hence, elucidating the richness and diversity of the microbiome at the site of pathogen colonization is pivotal. Here, we investigated the adenoidal tissue microbiota collected through adenoidectomy to evaluate the impact of Streptococcus pneumoniae. Prospectively, children with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and otitis media with effusion (OME) were enrolled. During

The Prevalence of Adenoid Hypertrophy among Children with Zika Related Microcephaly.

Upper respiratory obstruction is a common sequela in children with Zika-related microcephaly (ZRM). As a cross-sectional analysis nested in a cohort study, this study aims to investigate the prevalence of adenoid hypertrophy (AH) in children with ZRM and symptoms of respiratory obstruction. The data were collected in the first three years of life from children with ZRM who were followed in two reference centers for otorhinolaryngological care of patients with congenital Zika syndrome. Out of 92 children with confirmed ZRM, 57 were evaluated by nasopharyngoscopy after presenting with upper resp

Radiological and Audiological Assessment in Patients with Adenoid Hypertrophy Undergoing Adenoidectomy.

Large amounts of d-2-hydroxyglutaric acid (DGA) accumulate in d-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria (D-2-OHGA), an inherited neurometabolic disorder characterized by severe neurological dysfunction and cerebral atrophy. Despite the significant brain abnormalities, the neurotoxic mechanisms of brain injury in this disease are virtually unknown. In this work, the in vitro effect of DGA on various parameters of oxidative stress was investigated; namely chemiluminescence, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBA-RS), total radical-trapping antioxidant potential (TRAP), total antioxidant reactivity (TAR

Adenoid cystic carcinoma and basaloid carcinoma of the breast: A clinicopathological study.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast (ACCB) is a rare triple negative tumor (TNT) with an excellent prognosis in most cases. Three different histologic types are recognized: classic ACCB, solid basaloid ACCB (SB-ACCB), and ACCB with high-grade transformation. A majority of these tumors show characteristic molecular and immunohistochemical (IHC) features, with fusion of MYB and NFIB genes and overexpression of MYB, respectively. Basaloid carcinomas of the breast (BCB) are infrequently described. They resemble SB-ACCB and TNT of no special type (TNT-NST). We have studied the clinicopathologica

Primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma of the abdomen: a rare entity.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare neoplasm that arises from secretory glands, most frequently from the salivary glands. Primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma is microscopically identical to adenoid cystic carcinoma developing at other tissues. Therefore, differentiating between a primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma and an extracutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma with cutaneous metastases is pivotal to determine its prognosis and management. We describe a case of primary cutaneous adenoid cystic carcinoma on the abdomen that was successfully treated with wide excision.

Huffing and Puffing: A Rare Case of Tracheal Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma.

We present a case of a 78-year-old woman presenting with dyspnea and discovered to have an intra-tracheal tumor. Resection revealed this to be an adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the trachea, which is a very rare entity. She was treated with subtotal resection followed by radiation to the residual tumor, following which she relapsed six years later. Due to its indolent nature, she continues to be followed without any therapy. The biology, clinical features, and natural history of this rare tumor will be discussed.

Role of hypoxia-related proteins in adenoid cystic carcinoma invasion.

BACKGROUND: Among cancers affecting the oral cavity, adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a relatively common malignant neoplasm. It has high rates of metastasis and recurrence and is associated with significant morbidity. During the progression of ACC, the oxygen concentration is reduced in specific areas of the tumour microenvironment, leading to intratumoural hypoxia. The expression of NOTCH1, a disintegrin and metalloproteinase 12 (ADAM-12), hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF-1α), and heparin-binding epidermal growth factor (HB-EGF) under hypoxic conditions has been implicated in invadopod

ADENOID CYSTIC CARCINOMA MISINTERPRETED AS ANTROCHOANAL POLYP: A RARE PRESENTATION.

Adenoid cystic Carcnoma (ACC) is an uncommon malignant tumour accounting for <1% of all oral and maxillofacial tumors. However, in the sinonasal tract, ACC is the most common salivary gland tumor. The sinonasal ACC is asymptomatic initially or causes non-specific symptoms that are similar to those caused by inflammatory sinus disease and local neurological symptoms such as trigeminal neuralgia in advance stage due to perineural invasion by the tumour. We present a case of 35-year-old female who presented with complaints of nasal obstruction and headache. CT scans revealed an antrochoanal polyp

Adenoidectomy: Anatomical variables as predictive factors of intraoperative adenoid residues.

OBJECTIVES: Adenoid hypertrophy is a common cause of upper airway obstruction in children. However, after adenoidectomy, nasal obstructive symptoms may persist or recur, requiring surgical revision. The aim of this study is to evaluate if individual patient features can influence the efficacy of the traditional technique. METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted by recruiting patients from candidates for adenoidectomy. All children underwent conventional transoral curettage adenoidectomy with endoscopic control at the end of procedure, and in presence of adenoid residues, a

MYB promotes the growth and metastasis of salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma.

The incidence of recurrent t(6;9) translocation of the MYB proto‑oncogene to NFIB (the gene that encodes nuclear factor 1 B‑type) in adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) tumour tissues is high. However, MYB [the gene that encodes transcriptional activator Myb (MYB)] overexpression is more common, indicating that MYB serves a key role in ACC. The current study aimed to investigate the role of MYB in salivary (S)ACC growth and metastasis. A total of 50 fresh‑frozen SACC tissues and 41 fresh‑frozen normal submandibular gland (SMG) tissues were collected to measure MYB mRNA expression, and to analyse th

Adenoid Squamous Cell Carcinoma of Oral Cavity: a Case Report.

Adenoid squamous cell carcinoma is a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma with features of adenoid pattern. It has been reported to originate in the sun- exposed skin of the head and neck region. Although rare, there are cases documented within the oral cavity and nasopharynx. The clinical behaviour and the prognosis are variable. We report a case of adenoid squamous cell carcinoma in a 63-year-old female patient presented with a large mass in the left mandibular alveolar ridge. Histologically, the lesion showed areas of conventional squamous cell carcinoma along with atypical epithelial ce

Dedifferentiated adenoid cystic carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid.

Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (Ca ex PA) is defined as a carcinoma arising from a primary (de novo) or recurrent benign pleomorphic adenoma. The most common histological subtype is adenocarcinoma, not otherwise specified, salivary duct carcinoma, mucoepidermoid carcinoma, and adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC). Few case reports of de novo dedifferentiation in ACC are there in the literature, mostly involving minor salivary glands. The dedifferentiated adenoid cystic carcinoma arising in a pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland has not been reported earlier. The present case highlights this ra
