Comorbidity between psychosis and eating disorders: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Comorbidity has been reported between eating disorders and psychotic illnesses such as schizophrenia, and several hypotheses regarding their relationship have been proposed. Therefore, we aimed to systematically review studies involving patients who are affected by both psychotic symptoms and eating disorders (ED). METHOD: We systematically searched three databases for all studies describing psychotic symptoms among patients diagnosed with eating disorders. We conducted and reported the systematic review following the PRISMA statement. RESULTS: We included 67 publications, of whi

[How to differentiate schizophrenia from bipolar disorder using cognitive assessment?].

BACKGROUND: Historical aspects of the dichotomy between manic-depressive disorders and schizophrenia raise the question of a continuum between the two entities. Griesinger (1817-1868) proposed a unitary concept of psychosis: "Einheitspsychose", adaptations of which have survived until the present day. Although Kraepelin's traditional dichotomy is still a common base for clinicians every day: diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of psychotic disorders, recent epidemiological and neurobiological data are congruent with a dimensional aspect of psychosis. Epidemiological data are consistent with the

Developmental profiles of schizotypy in the general population: A record linkage study of Australian children aged 11-12 years.

OBJECTIVES: The detection of young people at high risk for psychotic disorders has been somewhat narrowly focused on overt symptom-based markers that reflect mild reality distortion (e.g., psychotic-like experiences), or prodromal syndromes that are proximal to psychosis onset. The concept of schizotypy represents a broader framework for investigating risk for schizophrenia (and other disorders) in childhood, before the onset of prodromal or overt symptoms. We sought to detect profiles of risk for psychosis (schizotypy) in a general population sample of 22,137 Australian children aged 11-12 ye

Mental disorders on admission to jail: A study of prevalence and a comparison with a community sample in the north of France.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to estimate prevalence rates of psychiatric and substance use disorders in male and female prisoners on admission to prison in the north of France and compare the frequency of these disorders to the general population. METHODS: This cross-sectional survey on Mental Health in the Prison Population (MHPP), conducted between March 2014 and April 2017, interviewed 653 randomly selected men and women who had recently been committed to the French general population prison system in the Nord and Pas-de-Calais departments. For each subject, the Mini Intern

The Relevance of Dual Diagnoses among Drug-Dependent Patients with Sleep Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders are often associated with drug use. Nearly 70% of patients admitted for detoxification report sleep problems. Dual disorder (DD) is the comorbidity between mental disorders in general and disorders related to psychoactive substance use. The association between substance use and sleep disorders (SD) appears to be bidirectional. Our objective is to analyze the association between sleep disturbance history and drug use pattern (alcohol, cannabis, opioids, and cocaine). METHODS: Analysis of data in the first interview at the Addictions Unit of the Department of Psychia

Mood disorders: review of current diagnostic systems.

In their sections on mood disorders, both ICD-10 and DSM-IV represent considerable advances on ICD-9 in drawing affective disorders together in one section, distinguishing bipolar disorder from unipolar, including dysthymia and using clear definitions. Problems with ICD-10 include complexity, use of different clinical and research definitions, emphasis on single versus recurrent episodes and the lack of some clinically useful subtypes. DSM-IV is less complex but assigns separate unjustified categories of medical and substance-induced mood disorders, and fails to code its useful qualifiers. Bot

[Diagnosis and treatment of "acute psychosis" from the dimensional perspective].

The term "acute psychosis" is commonly used as a provisional diagnosis in psychiatric acute settings, especially in emergency, when there is not sufficient information available to give a specific categorical diagnosis. The provisional diagnosis "acute psychosis" involves psychotic conditions with acute onset, psychotic conditions with unknown course and acute behavioural disorders with unknown subjective experiences. Because this provisional diagnosis is not a proper category, dimensional assessment of psychopathology including delusions, hallucinations, disorganization, mood/affect, catatoni

Psychometric evaluation of the Subjective Well-being Under Neuroleptic Treatment Scale (SWN) in patients with schizophrenia, their relatives and controls.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the 20-item version of the Subjective Well-being Under Neuroleptic Treatment Scale (SWN) in patients, their siblings and parents and in healthy controls. In order to study heritability of subjective well-being, assessment in unaffected relatives and healthy controls is necessary. Data were obtained from the Dutch GROUP study (Genetic Risk and Outcome of Psychosis), a large cohort study on non-affective psychotic disorders incorporating patients, their relatives and healthy controls. The SWN scale and other relevant asse

Psychotic symptoms in borderline personality disorder: an update.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this article is to review the most recent literature on psychotic symptoms in borderline personality disorder (BPD). RECENT FINDINGS: Both auditory hallucinations and delusional ideation (especially paranoid delusions) are relatively common in individuals with BPD. It is still difficult to distinguish these and related phenomena in BPD from the corresponding experiences in psychotic disorders and schizophrenia, despite numerous attempts to do so. The terminology introduced to help with this effort has not been particularly useful. The presence of auditory hal

Cognitive dysfunction in schizophrenia, affective disorder and organic brain disease.

We used the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) to study a sample of patients with affective disorder (N = 52), schizophrenia (N = 17) and organic brain disease (N = 8). Schizophrenic patients had lower verbal, performance and full-scale IQs than patients with affective disorder, but were no different from those with organic brain disease. An individual WAIS subscale analysis showed that, compared with affectives, schizophrenics had relatively poorer performance on language than non-language tasks. These differences were independent of age, sex, handedness, educational level or drug admin

Abnormal diurnal weight gain among chronically psychotic patients contrasted with acutely psychotic patients and normals.

We found diurnal weight gain to be abnormal among 28 institutionalized chronically psychotic patients. They were weighed daily for 15 days at 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. We normalized the diurnal weight gain (NDWG) as a percentage by subtracting the 7 a.m. weight from the 4 p.m. weight, multiplying the difference by 100, and then dividing the result by the 7 a.m. weight. NDWG was 2.8 +/- 1.3% for the 28 study patients, 0.631 +/- 0.405% for 16 acutely psychotic controls, and 0.511 +/- 0.351% for 29 normals. Ninety-three per cent of the study sample had NDWG values above the upper limit of normal. Sex, di

Autoimmunity, inflammation, and psychosis: a search for peripheral markers.

Accumulating evidence supports the view that deregulation of the immune system represents an important vulnerability factor for psychosis. In a subgroup of psychotic patients, the high comorbidity with autoimmune and chronic inflammatory conditions suggests a common underlying immune abnormality leading to both conditions. The reviewed data of affective and nonaffective psychosis show that if immune biomarkers exist for such immune abnormality, they may be found in raised macrophage/monocyte inflammatory activation patterns (monocytosis, high-inflammatory gene expression, raised glucocorticoid

The Nature of the Familial Risk for Psychosis in Bipolar Disorder.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: To clarify whether the familial liability to psychosis associated with bipolar disorder (BD) is nonspecific or has a greater effect on risk for psychosis in cases with prominent mood symptoms and/or a remitting course. STUDY DESIGN: We examined, in 984 809 offspring raised in intact families in Sweden, born 1980-1996 and followed-up through 2018, by multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression, risk in offspring of parents with BD for 7 psychotic disorders: Psychotic MD (PMD), psychotic BD (PBD), schizoaffective disorder (SAD), acute psychoses, psychosis NOS, d

Associations of specific psychiatric disorders with isolated focal dystonia, and monogenic and idiopathic Parkinson's disease.

Comorbidity of psychiatric disorders in patients with movement disorders is common. Often, psychiatric symptoms manifest before the onset of the movement disorder, thus not representing a mere reaction to its burden. How the disease mechanisms of psychiatric and movement disorders are related is still poorly understood. The aim of the present study was to compare prevalence rates of specific psychiatric disorders between different movement disorders including isolated focal dystonia (IFD, N = 91), monogenic Parkinson's disease (PD, N = 41), idiopathic PD (N = 45), and a sample from a Northern

Altered transfer of momentary mental states (ATOMS) as the basic unit of psychosis liability in interaction with environment and emotions.

Psychotic disorders are thought to represent altered neural function. However, research has failed to map diagnostic categories to alterations in neural networks. It is proposed that the basic unit of psychotic psychopathology is the moment-to-moment expression of subtle anomalous experiences of subclinical psychosis, and particularly its tendency to persist from moment-to-moment in daily life, under the influence of familial, environmental, emotional and cognitive factors. In a general population twin sample (n = 579) and in a study of patients with psychotic disorder (n = 57), their non-psych

Therapeutic drug monitoring of atypical antipsychotic drugs.

Schizophrenia is a severe psychiatric disorder often associated with cognitive impairment and affective, mainly depressive, symptoms. Antipsychotic medication is the primary intervention for stabilization of acute psychotic episodes and prevention of recurrences and relapses in patients with schizophrenia. Typical antipsychotics, the older class of antipsychotic agents, are currently used much less frequently than newer atypical antipsychotics. Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of antipsychotic drugs is the specific method of clinical pharmacology, which involves measurement of drug serum conc

Chronotype is associated with affective temperaments, clinical severity and worse treatment outcomes in bipolar disorders: results from a two-center, cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: The present study was aimed at investigating the clinical correlates of evening chronotype in a population of subjects suffering from bipolar disorders (BD). METHODS: We assessed chronotype using the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire. We administered the brief Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, and San Diego, the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, and the Alda Scale to evaluate affective temperaments, impulsiveness, and response to mood stabilisers. We performed bivariate analyses and ran a logistic regression model to analyse clinical variables associated with evening chronoty

School Failure in a Girl with Specific Learning Difficulties, Suffering from Childhood Depression: Interdisciplinary Therapeutic Approach.

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies confirm the association of literacy difficulties with higher risk of both childhood behavioral and mental disorders. When co-morbid problems occur, it is likely that each will require separate treatment. The management of major depressive disorder (MDD) for a 9.5 years old girl with specific learning difficulties (SLD), a protracted clinical course, and a family history of affective disorders, was challenging for the interdisciplinary team of our clinic, dealing with learning disabilities. AIM: The research and examination of the first-onset major depressive disor
