Plasticity in an electrosensory system. II. Postsynaptic events associated with a dynamic sensory filter.

1. This report summarizes studies of the changes in postsynaptic potentials that occur as pyramidal cells within the primary electrosensory processing nucleus learn to reject repetitive patterns of afferent input. The rejection mechanism employs "negative image inputs" that oppose or cancel electroreceptor afferent inputs or patterns of pyramidal hyperpolarization or depolarization caused by intracellular current injection. Feedback pathways carrying descending electrosensory as well as other types of information provide the negative image inputs. This study focuses on the role of a directly d

Mechanisms of cardiac pain.

Angina pectoris is cardiac pain that typically is manifested as referred pain to the chest and upper left arm. Atypical pain to describe localization of the perception, generally experienced more by women, is referred to the back, neck, and/or jaw. This article summarizes the neurophysiological and pharmacological mechanisms for referred cardiac pain. Spinal cardiac afferent fibers mediate typical anginal pain via pathways from the spinal cord to the thalamus and ultimately cerebral cortex. Spinal neurotransmission involves substance P, glutamate, and transient receptor potential vanilloid-1 (

Converging patterns of inputs from oral structures in the postcentral somatosensory cortex of conscious macaque monkeys.

Single neuronal activities were recorded in the oral region of the postcentral gyrus in conscious Japanese monkeys. Among 5,756 neurons isolated, receptive fields (RFs) and submodalities were identified in 1,502 neurons in area 3b, 970 in area 1, and 1,461 in area 2. The relative incidence of neurons that had bilateral RFs increased gradually upon moving caudally from area 3b to area 2 (bilateral integration). A total of 276 neurons had bimaxillary RFs covering both the maxillary and mandibular divisions of the trigeminal nerve, such as the upper and lower lips, upper and lower teeth, palate a

Mapping prefrontal afferents along development.

INTRODUCTION: The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) serves as a central hub for cognitive, emotional, and social processes by integrating inpu … marked, region-specific developmental changes. Quantitative laterality analysis revealed that many afferent pathways develop an increasing ipsilateral bias after neonatal age, arising through distinct combinations of ipsilateral and contralateral changes rather than a uniform loss of contralateral inputs. In addition, we identify region-specific developmental patt …

Anatomical relationship between vagal afferent fibers and CCK-immunoreactive entero-endocrine cells in the rat small intestinal mucosa.

There is evidence for a pathway involving small intestinal CCK-producing entero-endocrine cells and visceral afferent nerve fibers in signaling the effect of luminal nutrients on gastrointestinal and food intake regulation. In order to investigate the type of anatomical apposition that exists between CCK cells and vagal afferents, CCK immunocytochemistry was performed on tissue from rats whose vagal afferent fibers to the abdomen had previously been labeled in vivo by injecting the fluorescent carbocyanine dye DiI into the nodose ganglia. CCK immunoreactive (CCK-IR) cells were more abundant th

Characterization of cat nasal afferents and brain stem neurones receiving ethmoidal input.

Stimulation of the nasal mucous membrane can initiate protective reflexes, particularly sneezing and apnea. Very little is known about the receptors in the nasal cavity responsible for initiating these reflexes, which are thought to be mediated by trigeminal rather than olfactory pathways. In the cat, the ethmoidal branch of the ophthalmic division of V carries this afferent information. The objectives of the present study were to determine a set of adequate nasal receptor stimuli capable of initiating these protective reflexes; to characterize the types of information carried in the ethmoidal

Interactions between cutaneous and muscle afferent projections to cerebral cortex in man.

In order to demonstrate interactions between cutaneous and muscle afferent volleys in the ascending somatosensory pathways, different nerves of the lower limb were stimulated together in a conditioning-test paradigm, the changes in the earliest component of the cerebral potential evoked by the test stimulus being taken to indicate such an interaction. It was first confirmed that the cerebral potential evoked by stimulation of the posterior tibial nerve at the ankle is derived from muscle afferents in the mixed nerve and has shorter latencies than the cerebral potential evoked by purely cutaneo

Spino-bulbo-spinal pathway mediating vagal modulation of nociceptive-neuroendocrine control of inflammation in the rat.

Stimulation of nociceptors by intradermal capsaicin produces depression of bradykinin (BK)-induced synovial plasma extravasation (PE) that is markedly enhanced by subdiaphragmatic vagotomy. This depression is mediated by the adrenal medullae, a propriospinal pathway between the afferent nociceptive input and preganglionic neurones projecting to the adrenal medullae, and a spino-bulbo-spinal pathway. Here we investigated the role of spinal ascending and descending pathways in the interaction between noxious and vagal afferent inputs, leading to inhibition of BK-induced PE mediated by the adrena

Studies on the human spontaneous electromyelogram (EMyeloG). II. Patients with peripheral nerve, root and spinal cord disorders.

Using an intrathecal recording technique the spontaneous electromyelogram (EMyeloG) was recorded in 44 patients having peripheral nerve, spinal root and lower motor neurone disorders (17 cases), suprasegmental spinal cord disorders (18 cases) and diffuse involvement of the posterolateral funiculus or spinal ganglia (9 cases). In the first 17 cases, labelled as 'afferent group,' the spontaneous EMyeloG was significantly reduced, parallelling the paucity of afferent signals entering the spinal cord. However, the spontaneous EMyeloG was found to be normal in cases with the diffuse anterior horn c

Supraspinal connections of neurones in the thoracic spinal cord of the cat: ascending projections and effects of descending impulses.

Single unit electrical activity has been recorded extracellularly from 103 neurones in the thoracic spinal cord of decerebrate cats. The responses of these neurons to electrical stimulation of cutaneous and visceral afferent fibres, their projection through ascending sensory pathways and the effects of descending impulses on the neurones have been studied. Of the 103 neurones recorded, 45 (43.7%) responded only to activation of cutaneous afferent fibres ('Somatic' neurones). Their recording sites were located mainly in laminae II, III and IV of the dorsal horn. The remaining 58 neurones (56.3%

Clinical and Radiological Features of Aphasia Caused by Brainstem Infarction: Two Case Reports.

Cognitive impairment resulting from cerebellar damage, known as cerebellar cognitive affective syndrome (CCAS), can cause language impairment and aphasia. The disruption of the cerebro-cerebellar pathway is a possible mechanism for CCAS. Consequently, aphasia may also arise from brainstem lesions. However, the precise mechanisms of brainstem-induced aphasia are not fully understood owing to the scarcity of published reports describing this condition. Herein, we investigated characteristics of patients with aphasia attributed to the brainstem infarction. We retrospectively analyzed medical reco

Mechanisms underlying the recovery of lower urinary tract function following spinal cord injury.

The lower urinary tract has two main functions, the storage and periodic expulsion of urine, which are regulated by a complex neural control … recovery of bladder function after spinal cord injury is dependent in part on plasticity of bladder afferent pathways and the unmasking of reflexes triggered by capsaicin-sensitive C-fiber bladder afferent neurons. The plasticity is associated with changes in the properties of ion channels and electrical excitability of afferent neurons, and appears to be mediated …

Cooperative Oxygen Sensing by the Kidney and Carotid Body in Blood Pressure Control.

Oxygen sensing mechanisms are vital for homeostasis and survival. When oxygen levels are too low (hypoxia), blood flow has to be increased, metabolism reduced, or a combination of both, to counteract tissue damage. These adjustments are regulated by local, humoral, or neural reflex mechanisms. The kidney and the carotid body are both directly sensitive to falls in the partial pressure of oxygen and trigger reflex adjustments and thus act as oxygen sensors. We hypothesize a cooperative oxygen sensing function by both the kidney and carotid body to ensure maintenance of whole body blood flow and

Multiple Reflex Pathways Contribute to Bladder Activation by Intraurethral Stimulation in Persons With Spinal Cord Injury.

OBJECTIVE: To measure the urodynamic effects of electrical co-stimulation of 2 individual sites in the proximal and distal urethra in persons with spinal cord injury (SCI). This work was motivated by preclinical findings that selective co-stimulation of the cranial urethral sensory nerve and the dorsal genital nerve, which innervate the proximal and distal portions of the urethra, respectively, increased reflex bladder activation and voiding efficiency. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Electrical co-stimulation of urethral afferents was conducted in persons with chronic SCI during urodynamics. The effe

KV4 channels in isolectin B4 muscle dorsal root ganglion neurons of rats with experimental peripheral artery disease: effects of bradykinin B1 and B2 receptors.

Muscle afferent nerve-activated reflex sympathetic nervous and blood pressure responses are exaggerated during exercise in peripheral artery diseases (PAD). However, the precise signaling pathways and molecular mediators responsible for these abnormal autonomic responses in PAD are poorly understood. Our previous study suggests that A-type voltage-gated K+ (KV4) channels regulate the excitability in muscle dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons of PAD rats; however, it is still lacking regarding the effects of PAD on characteristics of KV4 currents and engagement of bradykinin (BK) subtype recepto

AKI and the Neuroimmune Axis.

Neuroimmune interaction is an emerging concept, wherein the nervous system modulates the immune system and vice versa. This concept is gaining attention as a novel therapeutic target in various inflammatory diseases including acute kidney injury (AKI). Vagus nerve stimulation or treatment with pulsed ultrasound activates the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway to prevent AKI in mice. The kidneys are innervated by sympathetic efferent and sensory afferent neurons, and these neurons also may play a role in the modulation of inflammation in AKI. In this review, we discuss several neural circuit

Role of afferent and efferent renal nerves in the development of AngII-salt hypertension in rats.

Hypertension is the leading modifiable risk factor for death worldwide, yet the causes remain unclear and treatment remains suboptimal. Catheter-based renal denervation (RDNX) is a promising new treatment for resistant hypertension, but the mechanisms underlying its antihypertensive effect remain unclear. We recently found that RDNX attenuates deoxycorticosterone acetate-salt hypertension and that this is dependent on ablation of afferent renal nerves and is associated with decreased renal inflammation. To determine if this is common to other models of salt-sensitive hypertension, rats underwe

The ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus in the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata): Afferent and efferent projections in relation to the control of reproductive behavior.

Sex-specific mating behaviors occur in a variety of mammals, with the medial preoptic nucleus (POM) and the ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus (VMH) mediating control of male and female sexual behavior, respectively. In birds, likewise, POM is predominantly involved in the control of male reproductive behavior, but the degree to which VMH is involved in female reproductive behavior is unclear. Here, in male and female zebra finches, a combination of aromatase immunohistochemistry and conventional tract tracing facilitated the definition of two separate but adjacent nuclei in the basal hypothala
