We report the case of a right-handed patient who exhibited right unilateral jargonagraphia after a traumatic callosal hemorrhage. The lesions involved the entire corpus callosum, except for the lower part of the genu and the splenium. The patient's right unilateral jargonagraphia was characterized by neologisms and perseveration in kanji and kana, and was more prominent in kana than kanji. The jargonagraphia was similar to that observed in crossed aphasia, except that agraphia occurred only with the right hand. The patient also showed right unilateral tactile anomia and right tactile alexia, a…

A case is presented of callosal syndrome following cerebral hemorrhage and amphetamine abuse in a 26-year-old right-handed man. There were few hemispheric findings but a full callosal syndrome including left apraxia to verbal commands, left tactile anomia, left agraphia, right constructional apraxia, failure of blindfolded side-to-side hand replication and form-board testing showing loss of interhemispheric transmission including intermanual interference. The "draw-a-clock" test showed left inattention when drawn with the right hand but not the left, and perseveration was noted for spatial tas…

Reading and writing impairments are frequent in primary progressive aphasia (PPA), yet their characterization in Spanish-speaking populations remains limited due to language-specific orthographic properties. The present study examined reading and writing impairments in 17 Spanish-speaking participants diagnosed with PPA (9 logopenic, 4 semantic, and 4 nonfluent), with the aim of identifying patterns of acquired dyslexia and dysgraphia across PPA variants. A single-case series design was employed, including individuals diagnosed with PPA and matched healthy control subjects. Participants were a

Sequential regression was used to evaluate whether language-related working memory components uniquely predict reading and writing achievement beyond cognitive-linguistic translation for students in Grades 4 through 9 ( N = 103) with specific learning disabilities (SLDs) in subword handwriting (dysgraphia, n = 25), word reading and spelling (dyslexia, n = 60), or oral and written language (oral and written language learning disabilities, n = 18). That is, SLDs are defined on the basis of cascading level of language impairment (subword, word, and syntax/text). A five-block regression model sequ

The objective of this study was to compare the effect of computer-assisted practice with the sensorimotor approach on the remediation of handwriting problems in children with dysgraphia. In a randomized controlled trial, experiments were conducted to verify the intervention effect. Forty two children with handwriting deficit were assigned to computer-assisted instruction, sensorimotor training, or a control group. Handwriting performance was measured using the elementary reading/writing test and computerized handwriting evaluation before and after 6 weeks of intervention. Repeated-measures ANO

The case study of Martial, a French 9-year-old boy, who exhibits severe mixed dyslexia and surface dysgraphia is reported. Despite very poor pseudo-word reading, Martial has preserved phonological processing skills as his good oral language, good phoneme awareness and good verbal short-term memory show. He exhibited a strong length effect when reading briefly presented words but no sign of mini-neglect. His letter-string processing abilities were assessed through tasks of whole and partial report. In whole report, Martial could only name a few letters from briefly displayed 5-consonant strings

The analysis of the spelling performance of a brain-damaged dysgraphic subject is reported. The subject's spelling performance was affected by various graphotactic factors, such as the distinction between consonant and vowel and graphosyllabic structure. For example, while the subject produced many consonant and vowel deletion errors when these were part of consonant and vowel clusters, respectively (e.g., sfondo----sondo; giunta----gunta), deletions were virtually never produced for single consonants flanked by two vowels (e.g., onesto----oesto) or for single vowels flanked by two consonants

A better understanding of the neural network properties that support cognitive recovery after a brain lesion is important for our understanding of human neuroplasticity and may have valuable clinical implications. In fifteen individuals with chronic, acquired written language deficits subsequent to left-hemisphere stroke, we used task-based functional connectivity to evaluate the relationship between the graph-theoretic measures (modularity, participation coefficient and within-module degree z-score) and written language production accuracy before and after behavioral treatment. A reference mo

INTRODUCTION: Sensory trick is a specific maneuver that temporarily improves dystonia that is usually observed in 44%-89% of patients with cranial-cervical dystonia and in 20% of patients with upper limb dystonia. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of sensory trick in a cohort of 37 patients with idiopathic adult-onset upper limb dystonia and to determine whether sensory trick can be a useful tool to distinguish dystonic and non-dystonic tremor.
METHODS: Thirty-seven right-handed patients with idiopathic upper limb dystonia and disturbed handwriting and 19 patients with non-dystonic ac

Spelling is a complex cognitive task where central and peripheral components are involved in engaging resources from many different cognitive processes. The present paper aims to both characterize the oral spelling deficit in a population of patients affected by a neurodegenerative condition and to clarify the nature of the graphemic representation within the currently available spelling models. Indeed, the nature of graphemic representation as a linear or multi-componential structure is still debated. Different hypotheses have been raised about its nature in the orthographic lexicon, with one

The Gerstmann syndrome of dyscalculia, dysgraphia, left-right confusion, and finger agnosia is generally attributed to lesions near the angular gyrus of the dominant hemisphere. A 68-year-old right-handed woman presented with sudden difficulty completing a Sudoku grid and was found to have dyscalculia, dysgraphia, and left-right confusion. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a focus of abnormal reduced diffusivity in the left posterior insula and temporoparietal operculum consistent with acute infarct. Gerstmann syndrome from an insular or peri-insular lesion has not been described in the

This paper reports a case study of a Cantonese-speaking dysgraphic patient. Among his written errors were phonologically plausible errors that were mostly homophonous or differed only in tone from their target. They occurred not only in writing-to-dictation but also in written naming. Since his lexico-semantic system is hypothesized to be largely preserved, as evidenced by normal performance on non-verbal semantic tests and word-picture matching, the presence of homophone and tonal errors strengthened previous claims about the existence of lexically mediated non-semantic pathway of writing Chi

INTRODUCTION: Handwriting is a modality of language production whose cerebral substrates remain poorly known although the existence of specific regions is postulated. The description of brain damaged patients with agraphia and, more recently, several neuroimaging studies suggest the involvement of different brain regions. However, results vary with the methodological choices made and may not always discriminate between "writing-specific" and motor or linguistic processes shared with other abilities.
METHODS: We used the "Activation Likelihood Estimate" (ALE) meta-analytical method to identify…
