A significant fall in the levels of plasma albumin and a corresponding fall i in the levels of extracellular calcium occurred following cardiopulmonary bypass with the crystalloid prime. Postoperative hypoalbuminaemia was well tolerated, except in the patients with poor left ventricular function. Postoperative hypocalcaemia may increase digoxin sensitivity and may augment the negative inotropic effect of verapamil.

We determined the oncotic and cardiovascular effects of a standardised infusion of human albumin (1.2 g/kg over 2 h as a 20% solution) in 12 premature infants on 18 occasions when hypovolaemia was suspected on clinical grounds. Blood volume increased by a median value of 15.5%, and fell to preinfusion values by 3 h post infusion in all but four cases. The side effects after the infusion of human albumin solutions, stabilized human serum and a modified gelatin are analysed. Diseases and indications for the application are listed. Intervals between application and side effects as well as frequency and type of symptoms are shown.
