Improved method for acetaldehyde in plasma and hemoglobin-associated acetaldehyde: results in teetotalers and alcoholics reporting for treatment.

A fluorigenic high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) assay for the determination of acetaldehyde in plasma and hemoglobin-associated acetaldehyde is described. The assay is based on the reaction of acetaldehyde with two molecules of 1,3-cyclohexanedione in the presence of ammonium ion to form a fluorescent species followed by reverse phase HPLC separation of specific aldehyde derived compounds. The assay is specific; and has sensitivity in the picomole range, with intraassay precision of less that 3.5% and interassay precision of less than 15%. The total run time is less than 6 minutes

Similarities in self-depictions of female alcoholics and psychiatric outpatients: examination of Eysenck's dimension of emotionality in women.

The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) item response rates of samples of female alcoholics and of nonsubstance-abusing female psychiatric outpatients were compared with those of three samples of putative psychiatric normals--female adults, medical outpatients and college students--to find items to which the two psychiatric patient samples would respond similarly to each other, but differently from normals. A total of 25 items were located that satisfied a stringent set of selection criteria. The responses of additional samples of alcoholics, psychiatric outpatients and putative…

The role of bacterial interference in the increased prevalence of oropharyngeal gram-negative bacilli among alcoholics and diabetics.

The oral flora of alcoholics, diabetics, and normal control subjects were compared using an agar overlay technique to determine whether the increased prevalence of oropharyngeal gram-negative bacilli among alcoholics and diabetics exists because patients with these diseases have decreased numbers of normal inhibitory bacteria in the oropharynx. Alcoholics generally had slightly lower concentrations of inhibitory bacteria than control subjects, and diabetics had somewhat higher concentrations than control subjects. However, colonized subjects did not differ from noncolonized subjects with respe…

Alcohol Dependence and Harmful Use of Alcohol.

BACKGROUND: In Germany today, there are more than 1.8 million persons who are dependent on alcohol, and 1.6 million persons whose use of alcohol is harmful. The many complications of alcohol use are both mental and physical-in particular, gastrointestinal and neurological. Yet more than 80% of persons whose alcohol use is problematic still receive no treatment for their harmful use or dependence, despite contact with the health-care system. METHODS: This article is a selective review of the pertinent literature, including guidelines, meta-analyses, and Cochrane Reviews. RESULTS: The treatmen

Assessment of alcohol consumption and alcoholism in the elderly.

This study evaluates characteristics associated with alcohol consumption or alcohol-related problems in an elderly population, as detected by CAGE questionnaire and self-reported alcohol intake respectively. Data were obtained from a multidimensional study carried out in a community-dwelling population aged 70-75 (n = 1205, 389 males and 816 females) living in the city center of Brescia, in northern Italy. All information was gathered by self-report. Male gender, better mood, daily function, somatic health, not living alone, and being married were significantly associated with self-reported al

[Alcoholism and mortality by cause, alcoholism and tobacco].

The basic data used are statistics of causes of death by sex and age group, with corrections taking into account unspecified causes of death. In a first part, we measure, with a model, the statistical linkage between mortality by cause and alcohol consumption, estimated from mortality of alcoholism. In a second part, the linkage has been calculated without influence of tobacco consumption.

Alcoholic hepatitis with and without alcoholic hyaline.

Sixteen cases of alcoholic hepatitis with alcoholic hyaline (Group I) and 13 cases without alcoholic hyaline (Group II) have been collected since 1970. These were most frequently found in the fifth decade in both groups. One female was found in Group I. Cases of about two-thirds of both groups were comsumers of 110 g or more of alcohol per day. No significant differences except fever and erythrocyte sedimentation rate were found in clinical and laboratory changes between both groups. Fatty change in liver biopsy specimens were more frequently seen in Group I than in Group II. The wedged hepati

Alcohol, microbiome, life style influence alcohol and non-alcoholic organ damage.

This paper is based upon the "8th Charles Lieber's Satellite Symposium" organized by Manuela G. Neuman at the Research Society on Alcoholism Annual Meeting, on June 25, 2016 at New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. The integrative symposium investigated different aspects of alcohol-induced liver disease (ALD) as well as non-alcohol-induced liver disease (NAFLD) and possible repair. We revealed the basic aspects of alcohol metabolism that may be responsible for the development of liver disease as well as the factors that determine the amount, frequency and which type of alcohol misuse leads to liver and

Alcohol expectancies, alcohol use, and hostility as longitudinal predictors of alcohol-related aggression.

The direct and interactive effects of alcohol expectancies for aggression, dispositional hostility, and heavy alcohol consumption on alcohol-related physical aggression were examined across the first four years of marriage in a sample of 634 newlywed couples. For husbands, alcohol aggression expectancies predicted increases in alcohol-related aggression; across husbands and wives, however, aggression expectancies were not found to interact with hostility or alcohol consumption to predict physical aggression. Consistent with previous research, hostility and alcohol consumption interacted with e

Sweet liking and family history of alcoholism in hospitalized alcoholic and non-alcoholic patients.

The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that preference for stronger sweet solutions may be associated with the genetic risk f … the alcohol-related behaviour of the subject's biological father. Similar to our previous findings, alcoholics were far more likely to prefer the highest offered sucrose concentration (0.83 M), compared to non-alcoholic controls. Such preference was determined by two factors: positive family history of alcoholism and alcoholic status. Statistically, these fa …

Prenatal alcohol exposure and family history of alcoholism in the etiology of adolescent alcohol problems.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relative importance of prenatal alcohol exposure and family history of alcoholism for the prediction of adolescent alcohol problems. METHOD: In 1974-75, a population-based, longitudinal prospective study of alcohol and pregnancy began with self-report of alcohol use by pregnant women. In a 14-year follow-up, 439 parents provided information on the family history of alcohol problems for these adolescent offspring. The 14-year-old adolescents provided information on the frequency and quantity of their own alcohol consumption within the past month, on the consequences o
