Impact of COVID-19 on lifestyle and mental wellbeing in a drought-affected rural Australian population.

INTRODUCTION: The SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused unprecedented social and economic disruption, accompanied by the enactment of a multitude of public health measures to restrain disease transmission. These public health and social measures have had a considerable impact on lifestyle and mental wellbeing, which has been well studied with metropolitan populations. However, limited literature concerning such effects on a selectively rural population is presently available. Additionally, the use of a standardised scoring system for lifestyle may be valuable for an overall assessment of l

Identifying Predictors of Suicide in Severe Mental Illness: A Feasibility Study of a Clinical Prediction Rule (Oxford Mental Illness and Suicide Tool or OxMIS).

BACKGROUND: Oxford Mental Illness and Suicide tool (OxMIS) is a brief, scalable, freely available, structured risk assessment tool to assess suicide risk in patients with severe mental illness (schizophrenia-spectrum disorders or bipolar disorder). OxMIS requires further external validation, but a lack of large-scale cohorts with relevant variables makes this challenging. Electronic health records provide possible data sources for external validation of risk prediction tools. However, they contain large amounts of information within free-text that is not readily extractable. In this study, we

Assessing alcohol and other drug problems (AOD) among sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic patients with a modified CAGE-A: implications for AOD intervention services and STD prevention.

The close link between alcohol and other drug abuse and STD morbidity and the positive impact of AOD intervention services in reducing STD morbidity, led the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) and the New York City Bureau of STD Control (BSTDC) to assess the prevalence of AOD problems among STD clinic patients. Assessing problematic AOD involvement among STD patients was of interest to BSTDC for STD prevention and to OASAS, for new AOD case-finding and early intervention. During fall, 2000, 100 STD patients in each of the 7 full-time BSTDC clinics in New Y

Do physicians assess lifestyle health risks during general medical examinations? A survey of general practitioners and obstetrician-gynecologists in Quebec.

BACKGROUND: In Canada several guidelines have been published for the screening of lifestyle health risks during general medical examinations. The authors sought to examine the extent to which such screening practices have been integrated into medical practice, to measure physicians' perceived level of difficulty in assessing these risks and to document physicians' evaluation of their formal medical training in lifestyle risk assessment. METHODS: An anonymous mail survey was conducted in 1995 in Quebec with a stratified random sample of 1086 general practitioners (GPs) and with all 241 obstetr

Caregiver Acceptability of Hospital-based Household Substance Use Screening during Pediatric Hospital Admissions.

OBJECTIVE: Exposure to household substance use (SU) is an adverse childhood experience linked to poor long-term health outcomes. Despite guidelines, pediatricians infrequently screen for household SU, often citing concerns about offending parents. Prior outpatient studies suggest caregivers support universal outpatient screening, but acceptability in inpatient settings remains unclear. This study assessed caregiver acceptance of household SU screening during pediatric hospitalizations, differences by reported household SU, and the association between screening acceptability and caregiver trust

The Thrills and Spills of GHB: Patterns and Negative Events Connected with Use in a Large Community Sample.

Introduction: Gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) and its precursor gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) are psychoactive substances commonly associated with men who have sex with men (MSM) and sexualized substance use contexts. Large-scale studies exploring broader sociodemographic characteristics and substance use behaviors among GHB/GBL users remain scarce. Methods: A convenience sample was recruited online through nightlife contexts to complete an anonymous online-questionnaire with a one-year follow-up. The survey assessed sociodemographic data, use of GHB/GBL and other psychoactive substances, GHB/GBL-

Screening and prevention of second primary cancers by hospital-based oncology professionals.

Cancer survivors face an increased risk of second primaries, but adherence to cancer screening and prevention recommendations remains limited. Post-treatment follow-up visits represent teachable moments for health promotion, including prevention of second primary cancers. We assessed practices and perceptions of second cancer screening and prevention among French hospital-based oncology health care professionals. An anonymous online survey using Likert scale was conducted. Clustering identified three prevention activity profiles (low, intermediate, high), and multinomial logistic regression ex

A global consensus on the critical care management of acute-on-chronic liver failure patients: the APASL ACLF Beijing Position Paper.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) is a severe syndrome in patients with chronic liver disease, marked by rapid multi-organ failure and high short-term mortality. Managing ACLF requires intensive care, but standardized global guidelines were previously lacking. The APASL ACLF Research Consortium (AARC) developed this position paper to establish a unified, evidence-based consensus for its critical care management. METHODS: A global collaboration of 109 experts employed a systematic methodology to address key aspects of ACLF care. Sections were drafted by specialist team

Changes in modifiable risk factors in women at increased risk for breast and ovarian cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Modifiable lifestyle factors exert a substantial influence on the development of various diseases. The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated the implementation of containment measures to mitigate the viral spread, which affected the maintenance of healthy habits. METHODS: Changes in lifestyle factors (e.g. physical activity, nutrition, smoking, drinking alcohol) within a cohort of German women at increased risk of breast cancer (BC) or ovarian cancer (OC) were evaluated through an anonymous web-based survey. The self-reported assessment of mental health was conducted using the PHQ-4 ques

Prevalence of health-related behaviours and associated factors in university students in Ireland: a 4-year repeated cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Transitioning to higher education (HE) has been highlighted as a critical time to embed positive health-related behaviours (HRBs). However, there has been a long-standing association between student life and risk-taking. This study aimed to (1) identify the prevalence of HRBs over time in cohorts of HE students in Ireland, (2) establish an overall health index and analyse the health-related status of HE students and associated factors based on this index and (3) explore student perspectives towards public health interventions. METHODS: Using an anonymous, repeated measures, cross-

Burdens and awareness of adverse self-reported lifestyle factors in men with sub-fertility: A cross-sectional study in 1149 men.

BACKGROUND: There are no current pharmacological therapies to improve sperm quality in men with sub-fertility. Reducing the exposure to lifestyle risk factor (LSF) is currently the only intervention for improving sperm quality in men with sub-fertility. No previous study has investigated what proportion of men with sub-fertility are exposed to adverse lifestyle factors. Furthermore, it is not known to what extent men with sub-fertility are aware of lifestyle factors potentially adversely impacting their fertility. METHODS: A cross-sectional anonymous questionnaire-based study on self-reported

Does self-certification reflect the cardiac health of UK sport divers?

BACKGROUND: Since 2009, the United Kingdom diving incident data show an increasing number of fatalities in the over-50s age group. Previous studies also suggest some divers take cardiac medications. Since 2001, diving medicals have not been mandatory for UK sport divers. Instead, an annual medical self-certification form, submitted to their club/school or training establishment, is required. We documented in a survey of UK sport divers the prevalence of cardiac events and medications and the frequency of medical certifications. METHODS: An anonymous on-line questionnaire was publicised.
