Modular synthesis of trisubstituted olefins and 1,3-dienes from renewable alcohols via ligand-enabled nickel catalysis.

Olefins are fundamental functional groups and of substantial commercial importance across a broad range of value-added chemicals. Their production from biomass-derived alcohols remains a longstanding goal, while the selective synthesis of trisubstituted olefins presents a formidable challenge that demands precise catalytic control to suppress undesired product formation. Herein, we demonstrate sequential cross-coupling/isomerization and cross-coupling/dehydrogenation of two different alcohols leading to stereoselective synthesis of trisubstituted olefins (27 examples; E/Z up to 98:2) and 1,3-d…

Manganese-Catalyzed Synthesis of γ-Hydroxy Phosphine Oxides by Addition of Phosphine Oxides to Allylic Alcohols.

A manganese(II)-catalyzed anti-Markovnikov addition of diarylphosphine oxides to primary and secondary allylic alcohols has been developed, which delivered synthetically valuable γ-hydroxy phosphine oxides. The reaction proceeds under mild, base-assisted conditions with a broad substrate scope and excellent functional group tolerance. Mechanistic studies indicate the involvement of a homogeneous catalytic system and a radical pathway. The reaction is devoid of side products, retains the hydroxy motif, and enables late-stage derivatization, offering an atom-economical approach to organophosphor…

Reactivity of p-Hydroxyphenyl Units in Enzymatic Co-Oxidative Coupling of p-Coumaryl and Coniferyl Alcohols.

The p-hydroxyphenyl (H) unit is an aromatic structure found in lignin, particularly abundant in compression wood and grass, and is derived from the incorporation of p-coumaryl alcohol (p-CMA). Although the structural and biosynthetic aspects of lignin have been extensively studied, the polymerization reactivity of H-unit during lignification remains poorly understood. In this study, horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-catalyzed homo- and co-oxidative coupling reactions (initial stage of enzymatic dehydrogenative polymerization) with p-CMA and/or coniferyl alcohol (CA) were performed to investigate mo

Organophotoredox-Catalyzed Fluoroalkylation of Morita-Baylis-Hillman Adducts Using Quaternary Fluoroalkyl Alcohols as the Fluoroalkylating Reagents.

Photoredox-enabled fluoroalkylation of MBH adducts using quaternary fluoroalkyl alcohols as the fluoroalkylating radical reagents is described. The facile protocol displays excellent functional group tolerance toward a series of synthetic allyl scaffolds containing fluoroalkyl groups under mild conditions. The alternative wavelength of visible light delivers the desired product with different yields and Z/E selectivities. A radical pathway involving an O-centered radical that induces β-scission to form the key fluoroalkyl radical is proposed in this transformation.

l-Proline·H2SO4: a sustainable ionic liquid as a catalyst for the tetrahydropyranylation of alcohols in water.

A highly environmentally adaptable and green method is developed for the tetrahydropyranylation of alcohols in water, catalyzed by an ionic liquid, l-proline·H2SO4, derived from nature's chiral pool. The tetrahydropyranylation of primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols was accomplished within an hour at room temperature. The catalyst was equally efficient for the deprotection of tetrahydropyranyl ethers in the presence of methanol to give the corresponding alcohols in quantitative yields. The method invites further attention due to the reusability of the l-proline·H2SO4 ionic liquid in water…

Electrochemically Promoted Synthesis of N-Sulfonyl Sulfinimidate Esters and Sulfilimines from Sulfonamides, Thiophenols, Thioethers, and Alcohols.

In this work, we report an electrochemical method for the straightforward preparation of scarcely accessible sulfinimidate esters from readily available sulfonamides, thiophenols, and alcohols. Mechanistic experiments show that sulfur oxidation at the anodic surface generates an electrophilic intermediate, which subsequently undergoes nucleophilic substitution. Moreover, sulfilimines can be obtained in moderate-to-excellent yields when thioethers are used as the S-donor instead of thiophenols via a dehydrogenateive imination process. This method is also characterized by mild reaction condition…

Additive-Controlled Divergent Synthesis of Amides and Ketones via Ni/Photoredox-Catalyzed Deoxygenative Functionalization of Alcohols.

Amides and ketones are essential carbonyl compounds with widespread applications in pharmaceuticals, materials science, and synthetic chemistry. Herein, we present a Ni/photoredox dual-catalyzed strategy for the divergent synthesis of amides and ketones from isocyanates and alcohols. This transformation is facilitated by N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-mediated activation of alcohols and is selectively controlled by the choice of additive: NaOAc promotes amide formation, whereas nBu4NPO4H2 directs the reaction toward ketone synthesis. This approach offers a versatile and practical route to access…

Amide and Thioester Synthesis Via Oxidative Coupling of Alcohols with Amines or Thiols Using Alcohol Dehydrogenases.

Amide and thioester moieties are prevalent in pharmaceuticals, natural products, and functional materials, but their chemical synthesis suffers from poor atom economy and ungreen conditions, while biocatalytic methods require ATP-dependent enzymes, activated intermediates, or show limited scope and activity. Here, we report the oxidative coupling of alcohols with ammonia or amines catalyzed by alcohol dehydrogenases (ADHs) via hemiaminal intermediates to form primary and secondary amides at pH 9.5-10.5. Pf-ADH preferably converted linear aliphatic or arylaliphatic alcohols (up to 90% conversio…

Keggin structure heteropolyacid-catalyzed phosphinylation of secondary propargyl alcohols with phosphine oxides to γ-ketophosphine oxides.

Phosphotungstic acid with a Keggin structure as an efficient, simple and green catalyst for the phosphinylation of secondary propargyl alcohols with phosphine oxides to afford γ-ketophosphine oxides with up to 88% isolated yield was developed using dimethyl carbonate as a green solvent. Diaryl- or alkylaryl-substituted propargyl alcohols, and diaryl or arylalkylphosphine oxides could tolerate the system, which reduced the catalyst dosage, and avoided the use of multi-components and toxic solvents. More interestingly, phosphotungstic acid exhibited the best activity when 0.58 moles of water wer…

Improvement of Qualitative Analyses of Aliphatic Alcohols Using Direct Catalytic Fuel Cell and Chemometric Analysis Format.

Direct catalytic methanol fuel cells (DCMFCs) have been studied for several years for energy conversion. Less extensive is the investigation of their analytical properties. In this paper, we demonstrate that the behavior of both the discharge and charger curves of DCMFCs depends on the chemical composition of the solution injected in the fuel cell. Their discharge and charge curves, analyzed using a chemometric data fusion method named ComDim, enable the identification of various types of aliphatic alcohols diluted in water. The results also show that the identification of alcohols can be obta…

Methanolation of Olefins: Low-Pressure Synthesis of Alcohols by the Formal Addition of Methanol to Olefins.

Methanolation of olefins is introduced as a new low-pressure synthetic pathway to C1 elongated alcohols. Formally, H3COH is added to the C=C bond in a 100 % atom efficient manner. Mechanistically, the overall transformation occurs as a tandem reaction sequence by combining the dehydrogenation of methanol to syngas at a CO : H2 ratio of 1 : 2 with subsequent hydroformylation to the corresponding aldehyde and its final hydrogenation to the alcohol. The dehydrogenation and hydrogenation steps are catalyzed by a Mn/pincer complex, while the hydroformylation is accomplished by a Rh/phosphine cataly…

NNN manganese complex-catalyzed α-alkylation of methyl ketones using alcohols: an experimental and computational study.

We present here a phosphine-free, quinoline-based pincer Mn catalyst for α-alkylation of methyl ketones using primary alcohols as alkyl surrogates. The C-C bond formation reaction proceeds via a hydrogen auto-transfer methodology. The sole by-product formed is water, rendering the protocol atom efficient. Electronic structure theory studies corroborated the proposed mechanism.

Cu-ABNO Catalyst for the Synthesis of Quinolines and Pyrazines via Aerobic Double Dehydrogenation of Alcohols.

In this report, a new imidazole- and amide-functionalized pincer-like Cu(II) complex (1) was synthesized and characterized. By employing 1 and 9-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane NH-Oxyl (ABNOH), a catalytic protocol for alcohol oxidation and the subsequent alcohol oxidation-triggered synthesis of quinolines and pyrazines were explored. Alcohols such as 2-aminoaryl alcohols were also oxidized efficiently. As carbonyls from 2-arylaminobenzyl alcohols and secondary alcohols are synthons for quinolines, we explored their synthesis directly from alcohols. The protocol was quite efficient and completed the r…
