Stabilized hemocompatible coating of nitinol devices based on photo-cross-linked alginate/heparin multilayer.

A novel stabilized hemocompatible multicomponent coating was engineered by consecutive alternating adsorption of two polysaccharides, alginate (Alg) and heparin (Hep), onto a Nitinol surface via electrostatic interaction in combination with photoreaction in situ. For this purpose, a photosensitive cross-linker, p-diazonium diphenyl amine polymer (PA), was used as an interlayer between alginate and heparin. The optical intensity of UV/vis spectra increased linearly with the number of layers, indicating the buildup of a multilayer structure and uniform coating. Photo-cross-linking resulted in hi

Alginate Oligosaccharide Treatment Delayed Postharvest Blueberry Softening by Modulating Water Mobility and ROS Metabolism.

Blueberries last a short storage time at 20 °C after harvest, rapidly softening and deteriorating. This study demonstrates that treatment with alginate oligosaccharide (AOS) could effectively retard this softening process. AOS treatment slowed down the loss of water inside the fruit, and enhancing the enzymatic activity and gene expression of antioxidants (SOD, CAT, POD, APX) to reduce the accumulation of O2-, H2O2, and MDA. Concurrently, it downregulated the activities and gene expression of cell-wall-degrading enzymes (PG, Cx, β-Gal, β-Glu), which helped preserve cell-wall integrity, maintai

Optimizing the Sodium Alginate/Gelatin Ratio Enhances the Stability and Intestinal Delivery of Hesperidin-Loaded Liposomes.

Hesperidin (HES) exhibits limited oral delivery potential because of poor aqueous solubility and low bioaccessibility. Here, HES-loaded liposomes were incorporated into a sodium alginate/gelatin (SA/G) composite hydrogel to construct a liposome-in-hydrogel delivery system. The SA/G ratio was systematically optimized to establish a balanced polymer network through the complementary functions of SA and gelatin. The optimized formulation (H5) exhibited a compact three-dimensional network with cooperative intermolecular interactions, favorable thermal behavior and improved colloidal stability. Dur

Lanthanum-modified shale powder/alginate composite hydrogel beads for fluoride-contaminated groundwater treatment.

Excessive fluoride (F-) in groundwater poses a serious threat to human health, necessitating the development of efficient defluorination materials. In this study, a novel composite hydrogel bead (La-SP/SA) was fabricated by incorporating shale powder (SP) into sodium alginate (SA) matrix followed by crosslinking with lanthanum chloride. The synthesis conditions were determined as SP dosage 4.0%, La3+ concentration 0.2 mol L-1, and crosslinking time 12 h. Under adsorbent dosage of 0.7 g L-1, initial F- concentration of 9.0 mg L-1, and pH of 5.0, La-SP/SA achieved an excellent removal efficiency

Solvent-Free Plasma-Assisted Synthesis of Hydroxyapatite Nanoparticles: Preparation, Characterization and Incorporation into Alginate Hydrogels.

In this work we explore a plasma-assisted, solvent-free synthesis of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HAp NPs) by exposing the precursors (i.e. CaCl2 and (NH4)2HPO4) solely to N2 and O2 plasma gases at different powers and treatment times. Depending on the plasma generation conditions, different calcium phosphate (CaP) phases are formed in addition to HAp, including octacalcium phosphate (OCP) and dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD). The conditions identified as the most favorable for the plasma-assisted synthesis of HAp, in terms of preferential formation of HAp over OCP and DCPD, reaction comp

Calcium ions released from alginate hydrogel promote wound healing by enhancing fibroblast activity.

Hydrogels are widely used as wound dressings owing to their biocompatibility, high water content, and ability to mimic extracellular matrix functions. Alginate (ALG) is a natural polysaccharide that forms ionically crosslinked hydrogels in the presence of calcium, where Ca2+ not only stabilizes the crosslinked network but also regulates cell behavior, which is essential for wound repair. In this study, ALG hydrogels were prepared with CaCl2 at 20, 50, 100, and 200 mM, and their gelation, rheological properties, calcium ion release, and cellular responses were systematically evaluated. The 100

Electroactive Sodium Alginate-Based Hydrogel Textile for Synergistic Antibacterial and Regenerative Therapy in Diabetic Wound.

Diabetic wound healing poses a significant clinical challenge due to high blood glucose, infection susceptibility, and impaired regeneration. However, current film-based hydrogel dressings often have limited gas permeability that restricts oxygen diffusion and may cause inflammation with prolonged use. This investigation presents an electroactive sodium alginate (SA)-based hydrogel textile through the synergistic effect of tannic acid (TA)-mediated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) dispersion and antibacterial properties. The dressing exhibits a skin-mimicking electrical conductivity of 0.107 S/m and re

Thermoresponsive therapeutic alginate hydrogel with bilirubin-loaded polydopamine nanoparticles for enhanced diabetic wound healing.

Diabetic wounds, a common and serious complication of diabetes, are characterized by delayed healing, primarily due to excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and heightened vulnerability to bacterial infection. Herein, to address the urgent need for effective wound healing materials, we developed a thermoresponsive therapeutic hydrogel composite comprising bilirubin-loaded mesoporous polydopamine nanoparticles (BR@mPDA NPs) incorporated into an alginate/Pluronic F127 (A/F) hydrogel matrix. Upon near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation, mPDA NPs generated a photothermal effect tha

Human iPSC-derived platelets generated in alginate scaffolds exhibit functional haemostasis in vitro and in vivo.

The manufacture of platelets from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) in a cost-effective, controlled and reproducible manner is a critical challenge for transfusion and regenerative medicine applications. Here we employ a high throughput, combinatorial screening method (CombiCult®) to discover new efficient protocols for generation of mature megakaryocytes (MKs) and platelets from human iPSC (hiPSC) lines. The CombiCult® platform was adapted to encapsulate hiPSCs cells in alginate by electro-spraying and cell differentiation was initiated in alginate beads, circumventing the need for strom
