INTRODUCTION: The Veratrum genus is composed of plants containing a diverse set of steroidal alkaloids. Veratrum plant material has been utilized for centuries as herbal medicines, however the alkaloids have such a low therapeutic index that they are not used in modern medicine. Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) are the most common plant-derived toxins with emerging evidence to contaminate soil, water, nearby plants and derived food products. Outbreaks of human poisoning cases, due to the ingestion of PA-contaminated food, have been reported in various countries including Ethiopia. Opioid alkaloids were identified in the urine of horses during an anti-doping control and in a case of intoxication. In both cases, it was suspected that the horses had ingested poppy-contaminated feed. To verify this suspicion, possible opioid alkaloid sources in Germany were identified through a literature research. Additionally, the contaminated feed was botanically and chemically analysed.
