A Need for Societal Involvement in Promoting a Culture of Care in Animal Research.

Evidence shows that people doing biomedical research with non-human animals suffer psychological consequences. A culture of care in animal research demands ensuring the well-being of personnel and research animals, and proposals for ethical oversight, social support, and external interventions to address the psychological burden on personnel are growing. With biomedical research being a public good, and the people involved doing so to advance scientific knowledge for societal health benefits, society bears some responsibility for animal research and could be involved in ways that promote the w

Seasonal Variation of Gut Bacterial Community in Wild Apodemus agrarius Is Associated With Intrinsic and Extrinsic Environments.

Environmental factors and the reproductive status of animals have been reported to influence host gut microbial community structure significantly. To date, there is a lack of integrated research reporting the relationships among environmental factors, gut microbial structure, and the life processes in animals. This study collected monthly temperature, precipitation, and vegetation indices in the sampling site, and body size metrics as well as reproductive indicators in wild Apodemus agrarius (Pallas, 1771) from 2016 to 2023; and also collected gut microbes in the monthly animal populations fro

Reporting preclinical gene therapy studies in the field of Niemann-Pick type C disease according to the ARRIVE guidelines.

The lack of essential information when reporting animal studies causing lower reproducibility has been stressed for decades. The ARRIVE (Animal Research: Reporting of In Vivo Experiments) guidelines were first published in 2010, to improve reporting of animal research, making in vivo studies more transparent thereby improving the scientific quality. Regardless of an endorsement from the scientific community, there is still a continuous need to improve animal research reporting, which unfortunately also is the case in the field of Niemann-Pick type C disease (NPC). NPC is a lipid storage disord

[A case of leptospirosis in an agrarian community].

A mortal case of leptosprosis happened in a little agricultural community situated in a country town in the south Lazio Region, and in consequence of that the Local Health Unit originated a series of epidemiological investigation and preventive treatments. Serological tests were effectuated both on the residents of the interested area and on animals of the farm. These serological tests gave positive results for four inhabitants and eight animals. The agricultural community were subjected to a chemoprophylaxis. No new cases of disease have been found. The drinking water was analyzed because the

First report of Sarcoptes scabiei parasitism (Sarcoptiformes: Sarcoptidae) in Lycalopes sechurae (Mammalia: Carnivora).

We present the first report of parasitism by Sarcoptes scabiei (Linnaeus, 1758), in a sechuran fox "Lycalopex sechurae". Sarcoptes scabiei is a mite that produces sarcoptic mange, which can lead to the death of the animal host and can cause epidemic episodes in wildlife communities. The sechuran fox was collected by the environmental police from a citizen who reported the animal. It was sent to a veterinarian specializing in wildlife, "Clinica Mansion Mascota", in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Immediate physical examination showed crusts on its skin, and samples of skin and blood were collected and anal

The gut microbiome and sociability.

The human gut microbiome plays an important role in the maturation of the neural, immune, and endocrine systems. Research data from animal models shows that gut microbiota communicate with the host's brain in an elaborate network of signaling pathways, including the vagus nerve. Part of the microbiome's influence extends to the behavioral and social development of its host. As a social species, a human's ability to communicate with others is imperative to their survival and quality of life. Current research explores the gut microbiota's developmental influence as well as how these gut-brain pa

The Role of Clostridioides difficile Within the One Health Framework: A Review.

Clostridioides difficile is the leading cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea in hospitalized patients. In recent years, the incidence of C. difficile infection (CDI) has increased globally, with a notable rise in community-associated CDI (CA-CDI). The presence of the microorganism in animals, the environment, and food suggests that these sources may contribute to the spread of the infection in the community. This review applies a One Health approach, integrating human, animal, and environmental health, to provide a comprehensive strategy for understanding and managing this pathogen. Finding

A review of zoonotic chlamydiae species in Africa: assessing their burden and potential impact through One Health perspective.

Chlamydia species, a group of obligate intracellular Gram-negative bacteria, affect humans, livestock, companion animals, and wildlife, with infections ranging from asymptomatic to severe depending on host species and strain. Diagnosis can be difficult due to mild lesions or co-infections. Because Chlamydiaceae infect multiple hosts, a One Health approach, integrating human, animal, and environmental health is essential for effective control and prevention. C. trachomatis remains endemic in many regions, while Chlamydia pneumoniae is implicated in community-acquired pneumonia. C. abortus threa

Antibiotic resistance genes of public health importance in livestock and humans in an informal urban community in Nepal.

Efforts to mitigate the increasing emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) will benefit from a One Health perspective, as over half of animal antimicrobials are also considered medically important in humans, and AMR can be maintained in the environment. This is especially pertinent to low- and middle-income countries and in community settings, where an estimated 80% of all antibiotics are used. This study features AMR genes found among humans, animals, and water at an urban informal settlement in Nepal with intensifying livestock production. We sampled humans, chickens, ducks, swine, and w

Development and Preliminary Evaluation of a Patient-facing Educational Video About Live Kidney Donor Surgical Complications.

BACKGROUND: Living kidney donation (LKD) improves transplant access; however, its use is compromised, in part, by individuals' unaddressed concerns about perioperative complications. METHODS: We developed an animated, patient-centered educational video about LKD surgical complications, with input from experts in transplantation, communication, and anthropology, 35 patients/care partners (5 LKD candidates, 5 prior LKDs, 10 kidney transplant recipients, 10 kidney transplant candidates, 5 care partners), and 1 community advocate. We then conducted an online pre-post study with 24 potential kidne

Chronic recording of vomeronasal pump activation in awake behaving hamsters.

The vomeronasal organs, the receptor organs of the accessory olfactory system, are important in chemical communication. Each organ contains receptor neurons sequestered inside a blind-ending tube with a narrow access duct. Large blood vessels surrounding the vomeronasal lumen act as a pump to draw substances into the lumen, under the control of vasomotor fibers in the nasopalatine nerve. Stimulation of the superior cervical sympathetic ganglion or nasopalatine nerve operates the pump (24) but its schedule of activation in awake behaving animals is unknown. Electrodes, implanted inside the vome

Piloting Noninvasive Pathogen Assessment and Perceptions at the Snow Leopard (Panthera uncia)-Domestic Animal-Human Interface in Nepal.

Little is known about pathogens circulating in free-living snow leopards (Panthera uncia) and their implications for both species conservation and local communities in Nepal. The close proximity between snow leopards and domestic animals increases the risk of pathogen spillover and represents a critical knowledge gap that has yet to be explored in Nepal. We conducted a pilot noninvasive health assessment of snow leopards in Nepal by screening for the presence of selected pathogens in snow leopards and livestock inhabiting the same area and having local community members complete a knowledge, a

A social environment influences the total RNA content of the brain cells of young laboratory rats.

The paper describes the results of measurement of the total RNA content of single cells of the frontal pole of the cerebral cortex, the septum, the dorsal hippocampus and the medial hypothalamus of 35-day-old male laboratory (Wistar strain) rats. Two groups of ten animals each, reared in different ways, are compared: 1) young which lived from the age of 15 days with their mother, their siblings, other adult animals of both sexes and the young of other litters in a large, complex space, and 2) young which lived only with their mother and siblings in a small, simple space, as is usual under labo

Toward Precision Biodiversity Detection: An Edge-Deployable Framework for Mitigating Data Redundancy.

Monitoring wildlife in remote areas is vital for biodiversity research, yet infrared-triggered cameras often produce large numbers of false or empty images due to environmental interference, causing data overload and power waste. To address this, this manuscript proposes WS-YOLO, a lightweight edge-optimized wildlife detection model based on improved YOLOv11n, which aims to integrate false-trigger filtering and accurate animal detection in a single model for field applications. Specifically, the model introduces three key enhancements: it adopts a Wavelet Convolution (WTConv) module to capture

[Coxiella burnetii in small ruminants - managing the zoonotic pathogen].

Q fever, caused by the obligate intracellular bacterium Coxiella burnetii, is a globally distributed zoonosis for which ruminants are considered to be the main reservoir. In Germany, the majority of human Q fever cases are linked to small ruminants. Epidemiological investigations show clear regional differences in herd prevalence, with higher detection rates in southern Germany, particularly associated with out-of-season lambing. Diagnosis in animals relies on both indirect (primarily ELISA) and direct pathogen detection (primarily PCR), although neither method can confirm the pathogen-free st

Taste processing in autism spectrum disorder: A translational scoping review.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by persistent challenges in social communication and restricted/repetitive behaviors, including sensory atypicalities. Taste processing is critical for assessing the sensory and hedonic properties of food; however, it remains understudied in ASD, which may limit our understanding of the disorder's links to selective eating and nutritional deficits. This scoping review on autistic gustatory functioning followed a predefined protocol. We conducted searches across four databases and identified 37 studies involving huma

Short communication on the use of a free rabies hotline service in Chad.

As part of the activities of a project to estimate burden of rabies and vaccine demand in Chad, funded by the GAVI Alliance, we set up a free hotline service to guide the population and related public services in the event of an animal bite. This short communication presents the data collected on use of the hotline and describes the value of such a mobile phone service. Flyers, posters and radio advertisements distributed information on the hotline. Not every conversation was systematically registered, but we gathered information from 345 calls in total, including caller location and reason fo

Inchworming: a novel motor stereotypy in the BTBR T+ Itpr3tf/J mouse model of autism.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a behaviorally defined neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by decreased reciprocal social interaction, abnormal communication, and repetitive behaviors with restricted interest. As diagnosis is based on clinical criteria, any potentially relevant rodent models of this heterogeneous disorder should ideally recapitulate these diverse behavioral traits. The BTBR T+ Itpr3tf/J (BTBR) mouse is an established animal model of ASD, displaying repetitive behaviors such as increased grooming, as well as cognitive inflexibility. With respect to social interaction an
