Calibration of magnetic and celestial compass cues in migratory birds--a review of cue-conflict experiments.

Migratory birds use multiple sources of compass information for orientation, including the geomagnetic field, the sun, skylight polarization patterns and star patterns. In this paper we review the results of cue-conflict experiments designed to determine the relative importance of the different compass mechanisms, and how directional information from these compass mechanisms is integrated. We focus on cue-conflict experiments in which the magnetic field was shifted in alignment relative to natural celestial cues. Consistent with the conclusions of earlier authors, our analyses suggest that dur

Retinoic-Acid-Related Orphan Receptor Alpha Is Involved in the Regulation of the Cytoskeleton of Hair Follicle Stem Cells.

The development and replacement of hair play a significant role in the life history of animals. In recent years, retinoic-acid-related orphan receptor alpha (Rorα) has been found to participate in the regulation of hair follicle development, yet the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. This study aims to analyze the regulatory role of Rorα on the cytoskeleton of hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs). We treated HFSCs with a RORA agonist and subsequently analyzed differential gene expression using qPCR, Western blotting, and immunofluorescence, finding that agonist-induced activatio

Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Low-Dose Aspirin in the Treatment of Periodontitis and Metabolic Syndrome: Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Skin-related disorders and periodontitis are distinct diseases that have been associated with altered levels of testosterone. Understanding the mechanisms through which testosterone mediates gingival enlargement in animals and humans is crucial for preventing or treating this condition. In this study, we investigated the impact of different doses of androgens, the role of aromatase inhibition, and the effects of testosterone association with sex hormone receptor antagonists or aromatase inhibitors on human gingival fibroblast proliferation and migration in vitro. METHODS: Fibrobla

Predicting disease spread from host movement data: Chronic wasting disease in North America as a case study.

Rare long-distance movements can increase the spatial spread of invasive species and shifts in species ranges. For wildlife disease spread, however, seasonal migrations may only matter if they lead to transmission to individuals using different seasonal ranges, and the importance of juvenile dispersal depends on whether those juveniles are infected before they disperse. High-resolution animal movement data are increasing, but it is unclear how to leverage these data to improve predictions of future disease spread particularly in regions without pre-existing movement data. We predicted the spee

Migratory birds have a distinct haemosporidian community and are temporally decoupled from vector abundance at a stopover site.

Migratory animals likely play an important role in the geographic spread of parasites. In fact, a common assumption is that parasites are potentially transmitted by migratory animals at temporary stopover sites along migratory routes, yet very few studies have assessed whether transmission at stopover sites can or does occur. We investigated the potential for a group of vector-transmitted parasites, the avian haemosporidians, to be transmitted during migratory stopover periods at Rushton Woods Preserve in Pennsylvania, USA. Using an analysis of 1454 sampled avian hosts, we found that while a c

Atlantic bluefin tuna tagged off Norway show extensive annual migrations, high site-fidelity and dynamic behaviour in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea.

Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABFT; Thunnus thynnus) is a highly migratory species. To investigate the migrations and vertical behaviours of ABFT migrating to Nordic waters, we deployed pop-up satellite archival transmitting tags on 25 ABFT off Norway (curved fork length: 228-292 cm). We obtained 16 full-year migrations, which differed between individuals, and physically recovered 13 tags, which provided 4699 days of archival depth and temperature data. ABFT occupied waters from the Arctic Circle to as far south as Cabo Verde, Africa, and occupied depths down to 1190 m and temperatures from 0.5 to 27

Avian influenza in Latin America: A systematic review of serological and molecular studies from 2000-2015.

Avian influenza or bird flu is a highly contagious acute viral disease that can occur in epidemics and cross-border forms in poultry and wild birds. The characteristics of avian influenza viruses (AIVs) allow the emergence of new viral variants, some with zoonotic and pandemic potential. AIVs have been identified in Latin America; however, there is a lack of understanding of these viruses at the regional level. We performed a systematic literature review on serological or molecular evidence of AIVs circulation in Latin America. Methods were designed based on the PRISMA and STROME guidelines. O

[The effect of copper on immune responses in guinea pigs with experimental ascariasis].

A subchronic effect of copper on selected immunological parameters was studied in guinea pigs with experimental ascariosis (Ascaris suum). CuSO4 given orally for 28 days moderately increased T and B cells in the animal lymphoid organs. CH50 and AH50 complement levels remained unchanged during CuSO4 administration. A subsequent infection of subchronically intoxicated guinea pigs caused a repeated insignificant stimulation of B cell values while the percentage of T cells was not increased. On the contrary, the complement levels increased significantly in intoxicated infected animals, namely CH50

Autologous fat injection for vocal fold paralysis: long-term histologic evaluation.

Many techniques have been developed for medialization of the paralyzed vocal fold. The purpose of this study is to evaluate autologous fat as an alternative to alloplastic substances for use in vocal fold medialization. Eight dogs underwent left recurrent laryngeal nerve sectioning. Autologous fat was harvested, and the paralyzed vocal fold was medialized by injecting the fat into the thyroarytenoid muscle. The animals were divided into three groups for evaluation at 1, 3, and 6 months. Videolaryngoscopy was performed prior to sacrificing the animals. The larynges were sectioned coronally, and

Premature gonadal failure in female dogs and cats.

Premature gonadal failure has been detected in phenotypically female dogs and cats with defective prenatal germ cell migration (ovarian aplasia), defective prenatal differentiation of the gonadal ridge into ovarian tissue (true hermaphroditism, male pseudohermaphroditism, ovarian dysgenesis in the presence of XO or XXX sex chromosome complements) or defective gamete maturation in the presence of primordial ovarian follicles (lymphocytic oophoritis, thyroid insufficiency). The most common of these is defective gonadal differentiation in animals with true hermaphroditism and failure of gamete ma

Tau modulates Schwann cell proliferation, migration and differentiation following peripheral nerve injury.

Tau protein (encoded by the gene microtubule-associated protein tau, Mapt) is essential for the assembly and stability of microtubule and the functional maintenance of the nervous system. Tau is highly abundant in neurons and is detectable in astrocytes and oligodendrocytes. However, whether tau is present in Schwann cells, the unique glial cells in the peripheral nervous system, is unclear. Here, we investigated the presence of tau and its coding mRNA, Mapt, in cultured Schwann cells and find that tau is present in these cells. Gene silencing of Mapt promoted Schwann cell proliferation and in

Toxocariasis.

Toxocariasis is one of the most commonly reported zoonotic helminth infections in the world with a higher prevalence in tropical settings and in rural populations. It is caused by the larval stages of the ascarids Toxocara canis, the common roundworm of dogs, and probably also by the larval stages of Toxocara cati, the roundworm of cats. The clinical spectrum of toxocariasis in humans varies from asymptomatic infection to severe organ injury caused by larval migration to the major organs ("visceral larva migrans"). Clinical involvement of the nervous system in visceral larva migrans due to Tox

Role of cytoskeletal abnormalities in the neuropathology and pathophysiology of type I lissencephaly.

Type I lissencephaly or agyria-pachygyria is a rare developmental disorder which results from a defect of neuronal migration. It is characterized by the absence of gyri and a thickening of the cerebral cortex and can be associated with other brain and visceral anomalies. Since the discovery of the first genetic cause (deletion of chromosome 17p13.3), six additional genes have been found to be responsible for agyria-pachygyria. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge concerning these genetic disorders including clinical, neuropathological and molecular results. Genetic alterations of

Crotoxin is responsible for the long-lasting anti-inflammatory effect of Crotalus durissus terrificus snake venom: involvement of formyl peptide receptors.

In the present study, it was investigated which components are responsible for the anti-inflammatory properties of Crotalus durissus terrificus venom (CdtV). The effect of crotoxin, as well as of other CdtV components was evaluated on edema, cell migration and alterations in leukocyte-endothelium interactions induced by carrageenan. Crotoxin (40 microg kg(-1)) was injected at different time periods before or after the injection of carrageenan (15 mg kg(-1)) into the mouse hind paw, peritoneum or scrotum. Results showed that crotoxin, but not other CdtV components, significantly inhibited infla

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis in strain II guinea pigs. II. Immunologic features.

A model of hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) in syngeneic animals would allow experiments designed to determine immunopathogenesis of HP. Strain II guinea pigs were treated with Micropolyspora faeni and challenged with intratracheal M. faeni. Skin test, serum antibody, hilar lymph node lymphocyte proliferation and bronchoalveolar macrophage migration inhibition (MMI) response to M. faeni antigen were determined. Sensitized animals had positive delayed skin tests, serum antibody and bronchoalveolar cell MMI, but not M. faeni-induced hilar node lymphocyte proliferation. We conclude that this mod

Emerging Tick-Borne Dabie bandavirus: Virology, Epidemiology, and Prevention.

Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS), caused by Dabie bandavirus (SFTSV), is an emerging infectious disease first identified in China. Since its discovery, infections have spread throughout East Asian countries primarily through tick bites but also via transmission between animals and humans. The expanding range of ticks, the primary vectors for SFTSV, combined with migration patterns of tick-carrying birds, sets the stage for the global spread of this virus. SFTSV rapidly evolves due to continuous mutation and reassortment; currently, no approved vaccines or antiviral drugs are

Animal Models of Hirschsprung's Disease: State of the Art in Translating Experimental Research to the Bedside.

Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR) is caused by incomplete colonization of enteric neural crest-derived cell (ENCC) in the bowel, the failure of ENCCs to proliferate, differentiate, and migrate leads to an absence of enteric neurons in the distal colon, resulting in colonic motility dysfunction. Various animal models of HSCR have been important in the understanding of the anatomy and pathophysiology of the disease and in the discovery of genes involved in HSCR. Four types of HSCR animal models have been developed: teratogen-induced, surgically created, naturally occurring models, and knockout model

Effect of bilirubin on an in vitro correlate of cell-mediated immunity--the migration inhibition test.

The effect of bilirubin on one of the basic cell-mediated immunity reactions, i.e. the migration inhibition test was assessed. For this purpose the model of tuberculin hypersensitivity in rabbits was employed and the effect of bilirubin was studied on the migration inhibition test and its two main phases; the process of MIF production and the effect of already preformed MIF on the effector system. It was found that the neutralizing effect of bilirubin on the migration inhibition (caused by specific antigen) was due to the effect of bilirubin on the process of MIF production.

Age-associated impairments in tissue strength and immune response in a rat vaginal injury model.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Surgical repair of pelvic organ prolapse often includes native tissue repair during which the patient's own vaginal connective tissue is used to achieve pelvic support. This method, based on plication and suspension often yields suboptimal anatomical outcomes, possibly due to inadequate healing of the vaginal connective tissue. We hypothesized that age might have a negative effect on the time course and tissue biomechanics of vaginal wound healing in a rat model. METHODS: Fifty young (12 weeks) and old (12 months) female 344BN Fischer rats were subjected to a post
