We reviewed the literature concerning arterial thromboses associated with the nephrotic syndrome and the hypercoagulable state. An illustrative case of peripheral arterial thrombosis and pulmonary emboli attributed to the hypercoagulable state of the nephrotic syndrome is included. In our patient, serum levels of antithrombin III, plasminogen, factor VII activity, factor VIII activity, and factor VIII antigen were abnormal. Kasabach-Merritt syndrome is characterized by the occurrence of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) usually caused by benign angiomatous tumours. Here we report the case of a 70-year-old man in whom DIC revealed a locally advanced hepatic tumour. An 83-year-old man had gradually worsening abdominal pain and vomiting. Laparotomy revealed segmental intestinal infarction resulting from thrombosis in the superior mesenteric vein. Necrosed intestine was resected and anastomosis was performed successfully. The patient was anticoagulated with intravenous heparin and nafamostat mesilate followed by oral aspirin. He recovered rapidly. Blood chemistry revealed protein C deficiency, while protein S and antithrombin III levels were normal. Laboratory evaluation of these proteins may help define the cause of mesenteric venous thrombosis.

The level of selected parameters of the coagulation system and fibrynolysis (prothrombin time, partial thromboplastin time, fibrinogen level, albumin C system, V Leiden factor and III antithrombin level) in 25 children who had been treated with Perthes disease was evaluated. In three children prolonged prothrombin time occurred; in one child anomalous protein C system was noted. The remaining parameters were normal in all children. The investigation results reveal that congenital disturbances of the haemostasis system were not the cause of Perthes disease in 24 children.

A 29-year-old woman experienced unexplained intrauterine fetal death (IUFD) three times, at 16, 27 and 27 gestational weeks. She was found to be protein C-deficient and the existence of infarction in the placenta was suspected at 20 weeks' gestation during her fourth pregnancy. Both heparin and antithrombin III were administered until delivery of a small-for-dates but live baby. Massive infarction in the placenta was evident at term. Anticoagulation with heparin is a useful treatment approach for cases of recurrent IUFD with protein C deficiency.

32 cases of venous thrombosis of the lower extremities in young adults under 35, are evaluated. Women are essentially affected (62.5%). Thromboembolic disease is a known complication of ulcerative colitis, but is rarely reported in Crohn's disease. In this study, we have tried to determine if there are indeed coagulation abnormalities associated with these two diseases. Four groups of patients were studies: (1) patients with ulcerative colitis; (2) patients with Crohn's disease; (3) patients with other diseases; (4) healthy control subjects. In both disease groups, platelet counts, factor V, factor VIII, and fibrinogen levels were found to be elevated, while antithrombin III levels were decreased.
