Psychometrics of the Spanish Version of the Screen for Adult Anxiety Related Disorders (SCAARED).

Objectives: To translate and validate the Screen for Adult Anxiety Related Disorders (SCAARED) questionnaire into Spanish. Method: The original SCAARED was translated into Spanish and administered to a non-clinical sample of 131 university students (92.4% women, mean age 22 years) in Valencia, Spain. To assess the concurrent validity of the SCAARED, the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale-21(DASS) and the Beck's Anxiety Inventory (BAI) were also administered. Test-retest reliability was evaluated 2 weeks after the first administration. Results: The internal consistency of SCAARED was high (α

Performance-based interpretation bias in clinically anxious youths: relationships with attention, anxiety, and negative cognition.

This preliminary investigation sought to examine basic interpretive biases, as assessed via performance-based means, in the context of anxious symptomatology, attention, and negative cognition in children and adolescents. At a single assessment, 26 youths diagnosed with primary separation anxiety, social phobia, or generalized anxiety disorder completed performance-based assessments of interpretation and attention. Youths and parents also completed diagnostic interviews and youths completed a measure of negative self-statements. Components of interpretation (threat-valence judgments and speed

Attention bias toward threat in pediatric anxiety disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To examine attention bias toward threat faces in a large sample of anxiety-disordered youths using a well-established visual probe task. METHOD: Study participants included 101 children and adolescents (ages 7-18 years) with generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, and/or separation anxiety disorder enrolled in a multisite anxiety treatment study. Nonanxious youths (n = 51; ages 9-18 years) were recruited separately. Participants were administered a computerized visual probe task that presents pairs of faces portraying threat (angry), positive (happy), and neutral expressions.

The prevalence of mitral valve prolapse in children with anxiety disorders.

Studies in adults have suggested a comorbidity of mitral valve prolapse and anxiety disorders, especially panic disorder. The nature of the association between these disorders is yet unclear. In the last years, case studies have appeared, reporting on the comorbidity of anxiety disorders and mitral valve prolapse in children. The present study evaluated the prevalence of mitral valve prolapse in children with anxiety disorders as compared to normal controls. The study group consisted of 52 children, 6-18 years old, with a diagnosis of panic disorder (9.6%), separation anxiety disorder (65.4%)

Comparative Analysis of Preoperative Sedation Modalities: Oral Midazolam and Ketamine Versus Chloral Hydrate and Meperidine in Pediatric Tonsillectomy - A Randomized Clinical Trial.

OBJECTIVE: A pre-anesthetic medication that is ideal for pediatric patients undergoing tonsillectomy should alleviate pediatric anxiety, facilitate the smooth induction of anesthesia, and have an analgesic effect for postoperative care. This study compared the effectiveness of an oral combination of midazolam and ketamine (MK) with an oral combination of chloral hydrate and meperidine (CM) as premedication in pediatric patients undergoing tonsillectomy. METHODS: This double-blind clinical trial study was conducted with 68 pediatric patients scheduled to undergo tonsillectomy. The participants

Comparison of clinical characteristics of pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections and childhood obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study were to identify unique clinical characteristics of children with pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections (PANDAS) compared with a control group of children with non-PANDAS obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) with respect to ancillary symptoms, types of obsessions and compulsions, symptom severity, and co-morbid DSM-IV diagnoses. METHOD: Classification of PANDAS was based on review of pediatric and psychiatric records using the criteria developed by Swedo and colleagues. Children aged 6-14 with PANDAS (n

Panic disorder subtypes: further clinical differences.

Panic disorder (PD) is a heterogeneous phenomenon with respect to symptom profile. Most studies agree that a group of patients with prominent respiratory symptoms emerged as a distinct PD subtype. In this study we compared a range of clinical features associated with PD and agoraphobia in patients with respiratory (RS) and nonrespiratory (NRS) subtypes of PD. The participants were 124 patients with PD (79 women and 45 men), with or without agoraphobia, diagnosed by DSM-IV criteria. Following the observer-rated Panic Disorder Severity Scale assessment, subjects completed self-report measures, i

Development of a novel observational measure for anxiety in young children: The Anxiety Dimensional Observation Scale.

BACKGROUND: Identifying anxiety disorders in preschool-age children represents an important clinical challenge. Observation is essential to clinical assessment and can help differentiate normative variation from clinically significant anxiety. Yet, most anxiety assessment methods for young children rely on parent-reports. The goal of this article is to present and preliminarily test the reliability and validity of a novel observational paradigm for assessing a range of fearful and anxious behaviors in young children, the Anxiety Dimensional Observation Schedule (Anx-DOS). METHODS: A diverse s

Preschool irritability predicts child psychopathology, functional impairment, and service use at age nine.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the predictive validity and clinical significance of chronic irritability during early childhood. This prospective, longitudinal study examined associations of preschool chronic irritability with psychiatric disorders, functional impairment, and service use at age nine in a large community sample. METHODS: Four hundred and forty-six children were assessed at age three and again at age nine. Child psychopathology and functional impairment were assessed at age three with the Preschool Age Psychiatric Assessment (PAPA) with parents and at age nine with the Kiddi

Therapist-youth agreement on alliance change predicts long-term outcome in CBT for anxiety disorders.

BACKGROUND: In individual cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT) for youth anxiety disorders, it is unclear whether, and from whose perspective, the alliance predicts outcome. We examined whether youth- and therapist-rated alliance, including level of youth-therapist alliance agreement, predicted outcome in a randomized controlled trial. METHODS: Youth (N = 91, M age = 11.4 years (SD = 2.1), 49.5% boys, 86.8% Caucasian) diagnosed with separation anxiety disorder, social phobia, or generalized anxiety disorder drawn from the ICBT condition of an effectiveness trial were treated with an ICBT progr

[Factor structure of the Spanish version of the Spence Children Anxiety Scale (SCAS)].

This paper presents the Spanish version of the Spence Children Anxiety Scale (SCAS), a rating scale for children and adolescents assessing anxiety disorders as they appear in the DSM-IV. SCAS scores were subjected to confirmatory factor analyses in a sample of 1671 children 10 to 17 years old. Results supported the proposed structure of six interrelated scales. This structure is completely invariant (except for means) in boys and girls and across age groups. Overall, girls scored slightly higher than boys. The relationship of SCAS scores with the child's age was nonexistent or very low and neg

Burn-injured youth may be at increased risk for long-term anxiety disorders.

This study aimed to determine the prevalence of long-term anxiety disorder in burn-injured youth. It is well documented that inpatient pediatric burn patients experience heightened anxiety. However, the prevalence of anxiety disorder in pediatric burn survivors warrants further investigation. Participants completed the Screen for Anxiety Related Disorders, a 41-item self-report measuring anxiety disorder symptomatology. Respondents included 197 pediatric burn survivors, 105 boys, 92 girls, who were between 8 and 18 years of age; the mean age was 12.4 ± 2.4 years. Mean age at time of injury was

[Children and adolescents' anxiety disorders].

Anxiety disorders were long underestimated in children by healthcare professionals, but they are now better diagnosed. They account for the most frequent psychiatric diagnosis between 6 and 18 years of age, with differences in prevalence or risk factors related to the clinical forms. Different clinical subtypes of anxiety disorders are detailed in this article: separation anxiety, specific phobia, generalized anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress syndrome, and obsessional-compulsive disorder. The repercussions of anxiety are often major on the psychological, relational

Children and adolescents referred for treatment of anxiety disorders: differences in clinical characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Reports of the clinical characteristics of children and adolescents with anxiety disorders are typically based on community populations or from clinical samples with exclusion criterion applied. Little is known about the clinical characteristics of children and adolescents routinely referred for treatment for anxiety disorders. Furthermore, children and adolescents are typically treated as one homogeneous group although they may differ in ways that are clinically meaningful. METHODS: A consecutive series of children (n=100, aged 6-12 years) and adolescents (n=100, aged 13-18 years

Childhood Adversity and Mental Health Outcomes Among University Students: A Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: Mental health concerns are common among university students and maybe elevated among those with specific risk exposures. The study examined the association between childhood adversities and mental health outcomes among undergraduate university students and assessed whether psychosocial and behavioral factors mediate those associations. METHODS: The Queen's University Student Well-Being and Academic Success Survey identified two large cohorts of first-year undergraduate students entering university in Fall 2018 and 2019 (n = 5,943). At baseline, students reported sociodemographic i

The Relationship Between the Therapeutic Alliance and Social Anxiety Symptoms Along the Course of Internet-Delivered Cognitive Behavioral Treatment.

The therapeutic alliance is a consistent predictor of treatment outcome. In the present study, we examined whether the therapeutic alliance is associated with symptoms of social anxiety along the course of internet-delivered cognitive behavior therapy (ICBT) for social anxiety disorder (SAD). We examined data from a large treatment trial (n = 182) in which individuals with SAD reported on their social anxiety and alliance with the therapist each week during the treatment (for 11 weeks). We examined the total variance in alliance as well as within- and between-individual variances separately. C

Emotional and behavioral impact of exposure to community violence in inner-city adolescents.

Used multiple methods and measures (i.e., youth report, psychiatric interviews, psychophysiological assessment) to investigate the emotional and behavioral impacts of exposure to community violence. Participants were 185 inner-city high school students (M age = 15.4 years; 42% female; 90% African American). Youth with high levels of community violence exposure reported more fears, anxiety, internalizing behavior, and negative life experiences than those with low exposure. No depression or externalizing behavior differences were observed. In a psychophysiological assessment in which adolescents

Exercise partly reverses the effect of maternal separation on hippocampal proteins in 6-hydroxydopamine-lesioned rat brain.

Animals subjected to maternal separation stress during the early stages of development display behavioural, endocrine and growth factor abnormalities that mirror the clinical findings in anxiety/depression. In addition, maternal separation has been shown to exacerbate the behavioural deficits induced by 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) in a rat model of Parkinson's disease. In contrast, voluntary exercise reduced the detrimental effects of 6-OHDA in the rat model. The beneficial effects of exercise appeared to be largely due to compensation in the non-lesioned hemisphere. The aim of the present stud
