The Sonority Sequencing Principle is a presumed universal that governs the permissible sequences of consonants within syllables. In two single-subject experiments, we evaluated this principle as applied to the acquisition of onset clusters and adjuncts by children exhibiting functional phonological delays (age in years;months: 3;2 to 7;8). Experiment 1 tested the hypothesis that children abide by the Sonority Sequencing Principle in development, such that the occurrence and use of marked true clusters implies unmarked clusters, but not vice versa. This claim was validated, in part, by the grad

Approaches to the treatment of developmental verbal dyspraxia based upon current theories about phonological development are explored. The author presents the concept of "bridging"; for example, making the transition from one sound to another or from one word to the next, as a reflection of the child's ability to generate hierarchical linguistic structures. The author suggests that children who have developmental dyspraxia must build phonological systems despite the fact that their ability to discover and use these hierarchical structures is impaired. Idiosyncratic patterns are expected, and s

When normal participants are presented with written verbal short-term memory tasks (e.g., remembering a set of letters for immediate spoken recall) there is evidence to suggest that the information is re-coded into phonological form. This paper presents a single case study of MJK whose reading follows the pattern of phonological dyslexia. In short-term memory tasks MJK does not phonologically re-code written materials but, it is argued, uses a visual code. There are three main lines of evidence for this, (a) MJK tends to substitute visually similar items for one another, (b) her performance is

Eighty children with DLD were examined with 18 language tests, mainly derived from a neuropsychological investigation called NEPSY (NEuroPSYchological Investigation for Children). The children were 6-0 to 7-9 years old and attended kindergarten. The test profiles of the first 40 children, Group 1, were utilized for the elaboration of a classification of DLD. The test profiles were grouped into five subgroups with the aid of a Q-type factor analysis. Then the classification was modified to suit clinical application by collapsing two pairs of subgroups. The resulting categories were called: the

BACKGROUND: Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in non-English speaking countries face challenges when assessing children for speech sound disorders (SSD). Exploring their clinical challenges in service delivery-along with their problem-solving approaches-may contribute to the development of instruments for clinical use in such settings.
AIM: The study aimed to explore assessment methods used by Iranian SLPs to identify children with SSD.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey took place with 113 SLPs working with children with SSD. The survey comprised 36 items grouped into four main themes-serv

PURPOSE: People with Parkinson's disease (PwP) typically experience impairments in vowel articulation; however, less is known about how this measure varies with speech task type and clinical characteristics such as cognitive impairment. We characterized vowel space in PwP with and without mild cognitive impairment (MCI) comparing performance across phonation, reading, and picture description tasks. We evaluated associations between vowel space and cognitive impairment, as well as motor symptom severity to elucidate the factors contributing to variability in this acoustic measure.
METHOD: PwP

A survey of 231 Australian speech-language pathologists (SLPs) was undertaken to describe practices regarding assessment, analysis, target selection, intervention, and service delivery for children with speech sound disorders (SSD). The participants typically worked in private practice, education, or community health settings and 67.6% had a waiting list for services. For each child, most of the SLPs spent 10-40 min in pre-assessment activities, 30-60 min undertaking face-to-face assessments, and 30-60 min completing paperwork after assessments. During an assessment SLPs typically conducted a

Multidisciplinary care for patients with clefts includes surgical correction of the facial disfigurement and optimizing the quality of speech to improve the social integration of the affected patient. This work summarizes the knowledge of communicational aspects of cleft lip (CL) patients. Cleft-type speech characteristics can be described as "passive" obligatory errors resulting from the anatomical defect and "active" compensation efforts. Long-lasting phonological deficits in patients with clefts may be due to the fact that their development is affected by abnormal learned neuromotor pattern

This report highlights the long-term management of velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) and misarticulation in an 18-year-old male with unilateral cleft lip and palate. Despite primary and secondary surgeries, persistent VPI required a speech appliance and intensive therapy to address glottal stops and pharyngeal fricatives. While therapy eliminated these errors, residual VPI continued to impact speech intelligibility. Reassessment revealed that while some misarticulations persisted, the patient retained speech improvements from prior therapy, allowing for partial substitutions of target sounds.

PURPOSE: This study compared the effects of motor-phonetic and combined phonetic-phonological intervention on the speech, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and parent-reported intelligibility in Dutch-speaking children with cleft (lip and) palate (CP ± L) and non-oral compensatory misarticulations (CMAs).
METHOD: Fourteen children with CP ± L were randomly assigned to one of two interventions, that is, motor-phonetic intervention (n = 7, Mage = 7.39 years) or combined phonetic-phonological intervention (n = 7, Mage = 6.86 years) stratified by age and gender. Intervention was provided wi

INTRODUCTION: The 22q11 deletion syndrome (S22q11) is a genetic disorder caused by the loss of a fragment of the chromosome 22. The clinical manifestations associated with the syndrome are diverse, including learning difficulties and alterations in voice, speech and language. However, to date we have not found any study that evaluates these aspects in the Spanish population with S22q11.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We evaluate the voice and speech of a sample of 10 boys and 7 girls, aged 3 years and 3 months to 13 years and 9 months old (mean age: 9,4 ± 3,5 years old) with S22q11, with voice recordi

Anecdotally, velar fronting can be difficult to remediate in some children. This pilot study examined the use of ultrasound visual feedback in remediating velar fronting in typically developing children. A single-case, multiple-baseline across-subjects experimental design was used to examine acquisition, retention and generalisation of velar treatment targets. Two otherwise typically developing children (P1, aged 4;0; P3, aged 4;11) completed the study. The productions of /k/ and /ɡ/ at syllable level were targeted during treatment. P1 improved her productions of /k/ and /ɡ/ at syllable level

BACKGROUND: Children at family risk of dyslexia have been reported to show phonological deficits as well as broader language delays in the preschool years.
METHOD: The preschool language skills of 112 children at family risk of dyslexia (FR) at ages 3½ and 4½ were compared with those of children with SLI and typically developing (TD) controls.
RESULTS: Children at FR showed two different profiles: one third of the group resembled the children with SLI and scored poorly across multiple domains of language including phonology. As a group, the remaining children had difficulties on tasks tappin

The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome represents a contiguous gene syndrome with a highly variable phenotype. To date, over 180 clinical features have been described. Studies have been done in order to identify the responsible genes. Several candidate genes such as TBX1 and COMT seem to be important in the development of the phenotype. One of the prevalent and serious problems encountered by patients with the 22q11.2 deletion is difficulty with speech. This may be due to a number of factors such as adenoid hypoplasia, muscle hypotonia, platybasia, upper airway asymmetry, and neuroanatomical abnormalit

UNLABELLED: Phonologic treatments have traditionally been designed to teach a target speech sound starting with presumed easy teaching tasks and progressing to harder tasks. This investigation evaluated the effects on single-phoneme acquisition, generalization, and maintenance of Concurrent Treatment, which randomly intermixed presumed easy and hard teaching tasks were utilized. A multiple-baseline-across-subjects design was used with 4- to 7-year-old participants with /s/ misarticulations. All four participants rapidly acquired /s/ and showed generalization to untaught exemplars ranging from

The author investigated the hypothesis that speed of processing in the phonological and orthographic systems is one of the underlying variables of word-reading effectiveness. Speed of processing was assessed using measures of behavioral reaction time and electrophysiological latencies during phonological and orthographic task performance. Participants were 20 dyslexic and 20 normal-reading, male college students. An electrophysiological component complex (N1-P2-N2), as well as 2 other components (P3 and N4), was identified in both groups on each of the experimental tasks. Significant group dif

L asymmetry in beta activity in the dyslexic group, again in both tasks. Theta activity did discriminate between the two tasks in the dyslexic group. In the phonological task, task-related frontal theta in the dyslexic group was significantly different from the control group, with the former showing an increase in amplitude and the latter a decrease. In the visual task, there was no significant difference between the dyslexic and the control group, with both showing a task-related decrease in amplitude. The inter-task variations in EEG response in the dyslexic group paralleling variations in t
