CONTEXT: Posttraumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) is a specific phenotype of osteoarthritis (OA) that commonly develops after acute knee injury, such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) or meniscal injury (or both). Athletic trainers (ATs) are well positioned to educate patients and begin PTOA management during rehabilitation of the acute injury, yet it remains unknown if ATs currently prioritize long-term outcomes in patients with knee injury.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate ATs' knowledge and perceptions of OA and its treatment after ACL injury, ACL reconstruction, or meniscal injury or surgery.

UNLABELLED: Dynamic postural control deficits and disrupted cortical pathways have been reported to persist beyond an athlete's return to activity after concussion, potentially increasing the risk of acute lower extremity musculoskeletal injury.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate acute lower extremity musculoskeletal injury rates before and after concussion in athletes with concussion and their matched control.
METHODS: College athletes with concussion (n = 44; age, 20.0 ± 1.2 yr) were physician-diagnosed. Nonconcussed college athletes (n = 58; age, 20.5 ± 1.3 yr) were matched to indiv

BACKGROUND: It is well accepted that persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) have impaired ability to regulate core temperature due to impaired vasomotor and sudomotor activity below their level of injury. Impaired heat dissipation puts SCI athletes at great risk of exercise-induced hyperthermia (EIH) (>37.8°C). There is minimal evidence for efficacy of any specific cooling method in SCI athletes in a thermoneutral sport-specific setting.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the extent of EIH in persons with and without SCI and subsequently examine the effect of a cooling vest to attenuate rise in core body

BACKGROUND: Older individuals with rotator cuff injuries may have difficulties not only with activities of daily living, but also with sports activities.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) How frequent and severe are rotator cuff abnormalities, as identified by ultrasound, in senior athletes? (2) To what degree does the severity of ultrasound-identified rotator cuff pathology correlate with pain and shoulder dysfunction?
METHODS: We assessed pain and shoulder function in 141 elite athletes older than 60 years of age (median age, 70 years; range 60-84) at the Senior Olympics who volunteered to participa

Although Lisfranc injuries are uncommon, prompt and accurate diagnosis of such injuries in athletes is essential in preventing career-ending injury. Undisplaced injuries have an excellent result with nonoperative treatment. The presence of any displacement warrants open reduction and anatomic fixation; although current evidence mostly supports screw fixation, plate fixation may avoid joint intrusion. It is imperative to warn athletes with significantly displaced injuries that there is a risk of a poor outcome, although some recent evidence suggests that return to elite competitive sports is st

Chronic injuries of the locomotor apparatus represent the main cause of drop-out among top level gymnasts. The aim of the present paper was to verify whether the postural control, investigated by using an integrated approach and accordingly optimized, could be an effective tool for the secondary prevention of training-related disorders of the locomotor apparatus, in a cohort of 20 young female athletes practicing rythmic gymnastic at top level. After a preliminary medical consultation all the subjects underwent a static and dynamic baropodometric test, an ophtalmological and a dental screening

In today's health-conscious society, more people are participating in athletic endeavors. As participation increases, so does the incidence of cervical injuries. Fortunately, most of the cervical injuries seen in sports are minor and can be treated successfully with minimal morbidity. It is important, however, to accurately assess the patient sustaining a cervical injury to rule out the presence of a more severe cervical injury. When practitioners understand the pathophysiology and treatment of common injuries, including sprains, strains, contusions, disc herniations, and simple fractures, mos

Female athletes who participate in jumping and cutting sports are 4 to 6 times more likely to sustain a serious knee injury than male athletes participating in the same sports. More than 30,000 serious knee injuries are projected to occur in female intercollegiate and high school athletics in the US each year. The majority of these injuries occur by non-contact mechanisms, most often during landing from a jump or making a lateral pivot while running. Knee instability, due possibly to decreased neuromuscular strength and coordination or increased ligamentous laxity, may underlie the increased i

Anterior cruciate ligament injury rates are four to eight times higher in women than in men. Because of estrogen's direct effect on collagen metabolism and behavior and because neuromuscular performance varies during the menstrual cycle, it is logical to question the menstrual cycle's effect on knee injury rates. Of 40 consecutive female athletes with acute anterior cruciate ligament injuries (less than 3 months), 28 (average age, 23 +/- 11 years) met the study criteria of regular menstrual periods and noncontact injury. Details concerning mechanism of injury, menstrual cycle, contraceptive us

Low back pain is a common complaint of athletes, and accurate diagnosis is essential, since many causes of back problems can lead to disability. If the obvious mechanical causes, such as muscle strain, "kissing spines," and leg-length inequality, have been ruled out, the more serious sources of low back pain, such as disk herniation, Scheuermann's disease (swimmer's back), compression fractures of the vertebral body, and stress fractures of the posterior elements, should be considered. Treatment goals for all these disorders include pain relief and prevention of further injury.

INTRODUCTION: Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a popular combat sport including wrestling, boxing, and martial arts, which involves danger and violence. It is reported to have one of the greatest injury rates among different sports, limits participation, and often consists of considerable medical costs. The available literature on MMA injuries is sparse and requires a comprehensive review of injuries in this popular sport. This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted with the aim of critically evaluating the epidemiological literature on injury patterns, mechanisms, and associated risk fa

Rodeo, a non-traditional sport, may pose a higher risk of injury compared to other sports due to the intense forces exerted by livestock. The purpose of this study is to investigate the prevalence of lower extremity injuries and discuss potential strategies for injury reduction among rodeo athletes. A systematic review with meta-analysis, following PRISMA guidelines, was performed. A comprehensive search of three electronic databases was conducted, searching for studies assessing the epidemiological trends of lower extremity injuries in rodeo athletes. Studies were included if they were publis

Youth sport participation has increased substantially over the past two decades, bringing well-documented physical, social and psychological benefits. However, this growth has been accompanied by a rising burden of musculoskeletal injuries among young athletes, with prevalence rates ranging from 34% to 65%. Overuse injuries account for up to 50% of all youth sport injuries, while severe injuries such as anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions have increased markedly over the past two decades. Early sport specialisation (ESS), defined as year-round, intensive, single-sport training that excl

Congenital and developmental cervical spine variants, as well as acquired or sport-adapted cervical morphologies, may alter canal reserve, segmental stability, foraminal dimensions, and the cervicothoracic outlet in athletes. This narrative review aimed to integrate the anatomically and methodologically heterogeneous literature linking these findings with sports-related injury and return-to-play decisions. PubMed/MEDLINE was searched from database inception through 6 July 2026 using controlled vocabulary and free-text terms for cervical anatomy, specific variants, athletic exposure, neurologic

BACKGROUND: Low back pain is prevalent among both the general population and physically active adolescents. A substantial proportion of cases can be attributed to lumbar bone stress injuries (LBSI), particularly among adolescents engaged in competitive sports, likely due to high physical demands. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence and incidence of LBSI in adolescent athletes, with a focus on sport- and location-specific as well as age- or sex-related differences.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using the PubMed and Web of Science databases to identify studies reporting on L
