Irritability in child and adolescent psychopathology: An integrative review for ICD-11.

In preparation for the World Health Organization's development of the Eleventh Revision of the International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-11) chapter on Mental and Behavioral Disorders, this article reviews the literature pertaining to severe irritability in child and adolescent psychopathology. First, research on severe mood dysregulation suggests that youth with irritability and temper outbursts, among other features of hyperactivity and arousal, demonstrate cross-sectional correlates and developmental outcomes that distinguish them from youth with bipolar diso

Course of disinhibited social engagement behavior in clinically referred home-reared preschool children.

BACKGROUND: Evidence supporting clinical relevance and persistence of disinhibited social engagement behavior (DSEB) pertains mostly to children reared in institutions and foster care. This study examined the course of DSEB in clinically referred home-reared children from early into middle childhood, and associations with neglect/emotional maltreatment, effortful control, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and Autism Spectrum Disorder. METHODS: Disinhibited social engagement behavior was examined in 124 children (82% boys, M = 4.06 years, SD = 0.89), refe

ADHD severity as it relates to comorbid psychiatric symptomatology in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).

Comorbid diagnoses identified in pediatric samples have been correlated with a range of outcomes, including greater levels of emotional, behavioral, and educational impairment and the need for more intensive treatment. Given that previous research has documented high levels of comorbid Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), this study closely examines the relationship between parent-reported ADHD symptoms (i.e., Conners' Parent Rating Scale, Revised [CPRS-R]) and the prevalence of additional comorbid psychiatric diagnoses in a pediatri

A Randomized Controlled Trial of a School-Implemented School-Home Intervention for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms and Impairment.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the efficacy of a novel psychosocial intervention (Collaborative Life Skills [CLS]) for primary-school students with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms. CLS is a 12-week program consisting of integrated school, parent, and student treatments delivered by school-based mental health providers. Using a cluster randomized design, CLS was compared with usual school/community services on psychopathology and functional outcomes. METHOD: Schools within a large urban public school district were randomly assigned to CLS (12 schools) or usual service

Do Children's Mental Health Symptoms Impact Their Access to Unlocked Guns at Home?

OBJECTIVE: To test whether changes in children's and adolescents' mental health symptoms predict changes in their access to unlocked guns at home. METHOD: This study used data from a longitudinal cohort study of 1,420 youth and their parents in the southeastern United States. Parents were assessed annually up to 8 times about their child's mental health (ie, conduct, oppositional defiant, depression, and anxiety symptoms) between ages 9 and 16 years (6,674 observations total). Parents were also asked whether there were guns in their home and whether they were locked. Generalized linear mixed-

Machine learning-based prediction of persistent oppositional defiant behavior for 5 years.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of oppositional defiant behavior is warranted for timely intervention in children at risk. This study aimed to build a predictive model of persistent oppositional defiant behavior based on a machine learning algorithm. METHODS: With nationwide cohort data collected from 2012 to 2017, a tree-based ensemble model, random forest, was exploited to build a predictive model for persistent oppositional defiant behavior. The persistent oppositional defiant behavior was defined by the presence of oppositional defiant behavior for all the five years. The area under the recei

Why Is It Easier to Get Mad Than It Is to Feel Sad? Pilot Study of Regulation-Focused Psychotherapy for Children.

OBJECTIVE:: This article reports results of a pilot study of three participants receiving regulation-focused psychotherapy for children (RFP-C), a manualized, short-term, psychodynamic treatment for children with oppositional defiant disorder and other externalizing problems. RFP-C targets implicit emotion regulation while using an intensive, psychodynamic, play therapy approach to decrease the child's need for disruptive behaviors. METHODS:: Three children with oppositional defiant disorder participated in a trial of RFP-C. Externalizing symptoms were assessed with the Oppositional Defiant D

Cognitive and affective components of Theory of Mind in preschoolers with oppositional defiance disorder: Clinical evidence.

The goal of the study was to examine the affective-cognitive components of Theory of Mind (ToM), in a community sample of 538 preschoolers, and more specifically in a subsample of 40 children diagnosed with ODD. The relationship between affective and cognitive ToM and some ODD clinical characteristics was examined. Children were assessed with structured diagnostic interviews and dimensional measures of psychopathology, impairment and unemotional traits. A measure based on eye-gaze was used to assess ToM. Mixed analysis of variance compared the mean cognitive versus affective scale scores and t

Oppositional defiant disorder dimensions and subtypes among detained male adolescent offenders.

BACKGROUND: In adolescent offenders, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and its dimensions/subtypes have been frequently ignored due to the stronger focus on criminal behaviours. The revised criteria of the DSM-5 now allow diagnosing ODD in older youths independent of conduct disorder (CD). This study aimed at analysing ODD dimensions/subtypes and their relation to suicidality, comorbid psychiatric disorders, and criminal behaviours after release from detention in a sample of detained male adolescents. METHODS: Suicidality and psychiatric disorders (including ODD symptoms) were assessed in a

[Adolescent behavioral disorders].

Adolescence is a period of physical and mental transition between childhood and adulthood, two supposedly quieter periods. Puberty and social pressures generate painful psychic conflicts even for a subject without particular problem. Behavioral disorders of adolescents are numerous and heterogeneous. It is oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, hyperactive disorder with attention deficit which often begin during childhood to evolve negatively in adolescence. Eating disorders, addictive disorders, self-mutilation and scarification are also found. Therapeutic management should be multi

Teacher ratings of ODD symptoms: measurement equivalence across Malaysian Malay, Chinese and Indian children.

BACKGROUND: The study examined the measurement equivalence for teacher ratings across Malaysian Malay, Chinese and Indian children. METHODS: Malaysian teachers completed ratings of the ODD symptoms for 574 Malay, 247 Chinese and 98 Indian children. RESULTS: The results supported the equivalences for the configural, metric, and error variances models, and the equivalences for ODD latent variances and mean scores. DISCUSSION: Together, these findings suggest good support for measurement and structural equivalences of the ODD symptoms across these ethnic groups. The theoretical and clinical im

The relationship between executive function abilities, adaptive behaviour, and academic achievement in children with externalising behaviour problems.

BACKGROUND: Specific domains of adaptive behaviours and academic achievement may, in part, depend on executive function capacities. Executive function deficits have been found to be associated with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), not Oppositional Defiant Disorder/Conduct Disorder (ODD/CD). METHOD: Using a sample of 110 adolescents, comprising four groups, ADHD only, co-morbid ADHD and ODD/CD, ODD/CD only, and a normal community control group, we assessed socialisation and communication skills with the Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scales, along with reading ability, and executi

Mediators and Moderators of the Relation between Parental ADHD Symptomatology and the Early Development of Child ADHD and ODD Symptoms.

The present study examined mediators and moderators of the relation between parental ADHD symptomatology and the development of child attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptoms across the preschool years. Participants included 258 (138 boys) 3-year-old children (M = 44.13 months, SD = 3.39) with and without behavior problems and their parents who took part in a 3-year longitudinal study. Maternal ADHD symptoms predicted later ADHD symptoms in children, controlling for early child symptomatology. Both family history of ADHD and paternal como

Hot and Cool Executive Functions in Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Comorbid Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

While neuropsychological deficits in both "hot" and "cool" executive functions (EFs) have been documented among individuals with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), these EF deficits are not universal across all individuals with this diagnosis. One potential moderator of executive dysfunction may be the presence of comorbid oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). This study examined the association between "hot" and "cool" EFs and comorbid ODD in children with ADHD. Thirty-three children with ADHD and comorbid ODD (ADHD+ODD), 67 with ADHD without ODD (ADHD-ODD), and 30 typically deve

Lithium-induced nephrotic syndrome in a prepubertal boy.

Lithium carbonate has been recognized to induce several renal side effects, including the nephrotic syndrome. This is a report of an 11-year-old, prepubertal boy with a mood disorder treated with lithium who presented with edema, bilateral pulmonary effusions, proteinuria, and hypoalbuminemia. Renal biopsy revealed pathologic changes consistent with minimal change disease. These symptoms normalized after lithium discontinuation.
