Congenital amusia is a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting musical ability. Previous studies have demonstrated that music reward sensitivity has both functional and structural bases. However, the nature of music reward sensitivity and its neural underpinnings in amusia remains unclear. This study combined the Barcelona Music Reward Questionnaire and magnetic resonance imaging to investigate resting-state functional and structural correlates of music reward sensitivity in individuals with amusia. Behavioral results indicate individuals with amusia exhibit reduced sensitivity to music, includi

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common chronic neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by symptoms of inattention, overactivity, and/or impulsiveness. The prevalence of ADHD varies in different settings and there have been voices raised to call for more objective measures in order to avoid over- and underdiagnosing of ADHD. Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) is a method where click shaped sounds evoke potentials that are recorder from electrodes on the skull of a patient. The aim of this study was to explore possible alterations in the ABR of 29 patients with ADHD compare

Objective Children with nonsyndromic cleft lip and/or palate often have a high prevalence of middle ear dysfunction. However, there are also indications that they may have a higher prevalence of (central) auditory processing disorder. This study used Fisher's Auditory Problems Checklist for caregivers to determine whether children with nonsyndromic cleft lip and/or palate have potentially more auditory processing difficulties compared with craniofacially normal children. Methods Caregivers of 147 school-aged children with nonsyndromic cleft lip and/or palate were recruited for the study. This

OBJECTIVE: Peripheral hearing disorders have been frequently described in children with non-syndromic cleft lip and/or palate (NSCL/P). However, auditory processing problems are rarely considered for children with NSCL/P despite their poor academic performance in general compared to their craniofacially normal peers. This study aimed to compare auditory processing skills, using behavioral assessment techniques, in school age children with and without NSCL/P.
METHODS: One hundred and forty one Mandarin-speaking children with NSCL/P aged from 6.00 to 15.67 years, and 60 age-matched, craniofacia

Synesthesia is an involuntary experience in which stimulation of one sensory modality triggers additional, atypical sensory experiences. Strong multisensory processes are present in the general population, but the relationship between these 'normal' sensory interactions and synesthesia is currently unknown. Neuroimaging research suggests that some forms of synesthesia are caused by enhanced cross-activation between brain areas specialized for the processing of different sensory attributes, and finds evidence of increased white matter connections among regions known to be involved in typical cr

BACKGROUND: In the presence of a (central) auditory processing disorder [(C)APD] central hearing processes are disturbed, leading to impaired speech perception in noise. Poor acoustics in educational institutions exacerbates the problem. In children affected by (C)APD this can result in impaired development of language, reading and writing acquisition as well as other skills.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 66 children aged 6-11 years completed the Oldenburg sentence test in noise (OlSa) with and without an FM system. Children with normal OlSa test results formed the control group (group 1)

The nature of the fundamental deficit underlying reading disability is the subject of a long-standing debate. We previously found that dyslexics with additional learning difficulties (D-LDs) perform poorly in simple auditory tasks. We now tried to determine whether these deficits relate to stimulus or task complexity. We found that the degree of impairment was dependent on task rather than stimulus complexity. D-LDs could adequately detect and identify mild frequency changes in simple pure tones and minimal phonemic changes in complex speech sounds when task required only simple same-different

PURPOSE: To analyze whether there is an association between the presence, intensity and type of voice disorder and the cepstral measures in samples of individuals with voice complaints.
METHODS: We used 376 vowel /Ɛ/ samples from individuals of both genders that had voice complaints. An analogue-visual scale was used for the auditory-perceptual analysis of voices regarding the overall grade of dysphonia (G) and the grades of roughness (R), breathiness (B), and strain (S), including a determination of voice quality (rough, breathy or strained). Measures related to cepstral peak prominence smoo

Infants born prematurely are at risk for cardiovascular events causing hypoxia-ischemia (HI; reduced blood and oxygen to the brain). HI in turn can cause neuropathology, though patterns of damage are sometimes diffuse and often highly variable (with clinical heterogeneity further magnified by rapid development). As a result, though HI injury is associated with long-term behavioral and cognitive impairments in general, pathology indices for specific infants can provide only limited insight into individual prognosis. The current paper addresses this important clinical issue using a rat model tha

BACKGROUND: Balance control performance after vestibular schwannoma surgical removal follows a course that is characterised by a deterioration in postural performance immediately after unilateral vestibular deafferentation (uVD) and a recovery process (vestibular compensation). However, sensory strategies for balance vary during tumoral growth, which could lead to differences in the preferential use of sensory afferences. This longitudinal study aimed to assess the post-operative sensorimotor strategies of postural regulation according to sensory preference of balance control before surgery.

Congenital amusia is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits of music perception and production, which are related to altered pitch processing. The present study used a wide variety of tasks to test potential patterns of processing impairment in individuals with congenital amusia (N = 18) in comparison to matched controls (N = 19), notably classical pitch processing tests (i.e., pitch change detection, pitch direction of change identification, and pitch short-term memory tasks) together with tasks assessing other aspects of pitch-related auditory cognition, such as emotion reco

OBJECTIVE: It has not yet been possible to explain definitively why some children find it especially difficult to acquire written language skills. Taking the phonological deficit theory as a basis, minimal pair reproduction, i.e. a simple phonological task, was measured in schoolchildren and compared with their spelling performance.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional investigation minimal pair and/or minimal triplet reproduction (real words and nonsense words) was measured in 200 schoolchildren in the third or fourth school year. The children's marks for spelling, German and mathematics were also

It is now well-established that there is a causal connection between children's phonological skills and their acquisition of reading and spelling. Here we study low-level auditory processes that may underpin the development of phonological representations in children. Dyslexic and control children were given a battery of phonological tasks, reading and spelling tasks and auditory processing tasks. Potential relations between deficits in dyslexic performance in the auditory processing tasks and phonological awareness were explored. It was found that individual differences in auditory tasks requ

The present study investigated auditory-phonetic processing in a group of adolescent and adult reading disabled subjects. Right- and left-handed dyslexic subjects were compared with an age, sex, and handedness matched control group. All subjects were studied with a consonant-vowel version of the dichotic listening task with repeated presentations of dichotically presented pairs of CV-syllables. Left and right ear correct scores were compared for ear advantage in each of the different subgroups of subjects. The main finding was the absence of an expected right-ear advantage (REA) in the right-h

In a qualified detoxication, states of anxiety caused by hallucinations can be specifically assimilated and psychologically reduced. Knowledge of the hallucinations experienced promotes the subsequent motivation phase. A semistandardized investigation of 64 patients with alcohol-induced delirium tremens was carried out over a period of 14 months in order to establish the nature of their perceptual hallucinations. Visual hallucinations predominated followed by auditory and tactile perceptual hallucinations. Amongst visual hallucinations pertaining to animals, the well-known 'white mice' were on

BACKGROUND: Sensory prediction allows the brain to anticipate and parse incoming self-generated sensory information from externally generated signals. Sensory prediction breakdowns may contribute to perceptual and agency abnormalities in psychosis (hallucinations, delusions). The pons, a central node in a cortico-ponto-cerebellar-thalamo-cortical circuit, is thought to support sensory prediction. Examination of pons connectivity in schizophrenia and its role in sensory prediction abnormalities is lacking.
METHODS: We examined these relationships using resting-state functional magnetic resonan

The timing of perceptual events depends on an anatomically and functionally connected network comprising basal ganglia, cerebellum, pre-frontal cortex and supplementary motor area. Recent studies demonstrate the cerebellum to be involved in absolute, duration-based timing, but not in relative timing based on a regular beat. Conversely, functional involvement of the striatum is observed in relative timing, but its role in absolute timing is unclear. This work tests the specific role of the basal ganglia in the perceptual timing of auditory events. It aims to distinguish the hypothesised unified

Previous studies of children with Landau-Kleffner syndrome and related language-epilepsy syndromes have focused on the relationship of seizure control to language recovery. We examined the effect of premorbid language skills and behavior, as well as some characteristics of clinical seizures and electroencephalograms, on language recovery in a retrospective study of 67 children with the severe receptive and expressive language disorder, verbal auditory agnosia. Fifty-eight percent of these children had seizures, 76% were autistic, and 24% had a history of language regression after showing previ
