Characterizing Spatial Disorientation in Flight Simulation Through Electroencephalogram Trends.

INTRODUCTION: Spatial disorientation (SD) remains a persistent threat to aviation safety, particularly during transitions from visual to instrument meteorological conditions. This study investigated the physiological and cognitive effects of an induced SD illusion during simulated flight using multimodal sensor data. METHODS: Five instrument-rated fixed-wing pilots each completed two simulator flights, one containing decoupled motion cues designed to elicit SD. Physiological data were collected using electroencephalogram (EEG) and cardiorespiratory monitoring, while subjective cognitive load …

Flow Reactor Study of the Soot Precursors of Novel Cycloalkanes as Synthetic Jet Fuel Compounds: Octahydroindene, p‑Menthane, and 1,4-Dimethylcyclooctane.

Sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) or Synthetic aviation turbine fuels (SATFs) derived from nonpetroleum sources are essential for energy security and a strong rural and agricultural economy. Airplanes operating on SAF can have lower particle emissions compared to those of conventional jet fuel, reducing air quality impacts near airports. Processing biobased isoprene or wood and agricultural waste can produce cycloalkane-rich fuels with properties meeting ASTM International's SATF requirements. The unique structures of these cycloalkanes yield lower soot emissions because of their lack of aroma…

Hysteria as a Trigger for Epidemic Decompression Sickness Following Hypobaric Hypoxia Training.

INTRODUCTION: Although hypobaric hypoxia training (HHT) is an essential component of aviation physiology training, it poses a risk of decompression sickness (DCS). DCS can sometimes be observed as a cluster of cases, which is referred to as epidemic DCS. In this report, we aim to evaluate an epidemic DCS episode that occurred following two consecutive HHT sessions.METHODS: A total of 16 trainees, all of whom were medical doctors, attended the aviation medicine training course in the aeromedical research and training center. They went through HHT in two sessions, each with eight trainees.RESULT…

A Bayesian Approach on Investigating Helicopter Emergency Medical Fatal Accidents.

INTRODUCTION: Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) is a mode of transportation designed to expedite the transport of a patient. Compared to other modes of emergency transport and other areas of aviation, historically HEMS has had the highest accident-related fatality rates. Analysis of these accident data has revealed factors associated with an increased likelihood of accident-based fatalities. Here we report the results of an analysis on the likelihood of a fatality based on various factors as a result of a HEMS accident, employing a Bayesian framework.METHODS: A retrospective study wa…

Forensic implications of the foot and ankle.

To clinicians, forensic medicine and the foot and ankle complex may appear to have little connection. However, if decomposed, burned, fragmented, or skeletonized human remains are recovered, the foot and ankle can provide information leading to identification and incident analysis. Furthermore, analysis of data collected at accidents can lead to safety modifications. This article reviews common elements of forensic medicine applied to the foot and ankle in 2 areas: establishing positive identification by using radiographic comparisons and analyzing aviation incidents. An understanding of these…
