Acute radiation dermatitis in breast cancer: topical therapy with vitamin E acetate in lipophilic gel base.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy can cause adverse skin reactions over the course of their treatment. Currently, management is based on several tropical products although there is no gold-standard approach to prevention and management of radiation toxicity. METHOD: We report our experience of vitamin E acetate in the treatment of radiation dermatitis in breast cancer patients who experienced grade 4 side effects (according to Radiation Therapy Oncology Group criteria). RESULTS: Clinical management consisted of oral antibiotics and local application of vitamin E acetate and local escarectomy. All of

Outcomes of breast reconstruction in breast cancer patients with a history of mantle radiation for Hodgkin lymphoma.

BACKGROUND: Although mantle radiation (ie, extended field radiation) represented the standard of care in the past for Hodgkin disease, contemporary treatment of lymphoma consists of a multimodal approach with chemotherapy. Patients who were exposed to mantle radiation have a higher risk of breast cancer and are more susceptible to postoperative complications after breast reconstruction due to radiation. In this study, we present postoperative outcomes in patients with a history of mantle radiation who underwent mastectomy and breast reconstruction. METHODS: All patients at Stanford University

Occupational exposure to ionizing radiation in a nuclear medicine department: myth and reality.

Nuclear medicine is a diagnostic and therapeutic medical specialty based on the administration of radiopharmaceuticals emitting ionizing radiation (IR). In this context, healthcare professionals are exposed to low doses of radiation during their activity. This review aims to provide an up-to-date overview of occupational exposures in nuclear medicine in France, based on data from the 2023 IRSN and 2024 ASN reports, and to put them into perspective with those of other medical or industrial sectors, as well as with natural background exposure. Occupational exposures in nuclear medicine remain ve

Accuracy of intraoperative fluoroscopy with and without laser guidance in foot and ankle surgery.

BACKGROUND: The use of intraoperative fluoroscopy in orthopedic surgery involves frequent exposure to ionizing radiation in the operating room. Although a number of studies have found radiation exposure to orthopedic surgeons to be well below recommended doses, the long-term effects of low-dose radiation are not well known. Thus, all effective practical methods should be undertaken to reduce the exposure to radiation. Our purpose was to determine whether the use of a laser-aiming device improves the accuracy of intraoperative fluoroscopy to reduce, by implication, radiation exposure in the ope

IRIDIUM-192 RADIOTHERAPY BENEFITS IN THE MANAGEMENT OF GYNECOLOGICAL TUMORS.

BACKGROUND: Application of the most advanced radiation technologies of brachytherapy featuring the high dose ratesources i.e. 60Co and 192Ir within contemporary management protocols for gynecological cancer provides maximum dosedistribution in the clinical target along with minimal radiation exposure on surrounding organs and tissues. It involvesirradiation of large spaces with delivery of high therapeutic doses at the tolerance bound of «critical» organs (bladder, rectum) and tissues. Thus minimization of the early and late radiation complications, life span extent and quality oflife increase

Long-Term Tumor Control After Carbon Ion Radiation Therapy Boost in Locally Advanced Cervical Clear Cell Adenocarcinoma.

Clear cell adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix is a rare and aggressive subtype of cervical cancer, typically resistant to conventional radiation therapy and lacking dedicated treatment guidelines. We present the case of a young patient with an ataxia telangiectasia mutation and locally advanced disease, who was unfit for brachytherapy following standard chemoradiotherapy and subsequently received a carbon ion radiation therapy boost. This mixed-beam strategy was well tolerated and led to durable local control along with a nodal response, which is suggestive of a possible abscopal effect. The

Impact of Prior Radiation on Postoperative Complications following Elective Implant Exchange.

BACKGROUND: The indications for postmastectomy radiation therapy continue to expand. Although radiation therapy is associated with higher rates of complications, many patients undergo implant-based breast reconstruction despite radiation and will eventually require elective exchange of their permanent implant. However, the risks of elective implant exchange in the previously irradiated patient remain unknown. METHODS: A single-institution retrospective review was conducted of patients who underwent 2-stage implant-based breast reconstruction followed by elective implant exchange between 2010

Primary Vestibular Schwannoma Cells Activate p21 and RAD51-Associated DNA Repair Following Radiation-Induced DNA Damage.

HYPOTHESIS: Vestibular Schwannoma (VS) can avoid cell death following radiation injury by entering cell cycle arrest and activating RAD51-related DNA repair. BACKGROUND: Although the radiobiology of various cancers is well-studied, the radiobiological effects in VS are poorly understood. In this study, we describe how VS cells enter cell cycle arrest (through p21 expression), activate DNA repair (through RAD51 upregulation), and avoid cell death after radiation-induced double-stranded breaks (DSB) in DNA (as measured by γ-H2AX). METHODS: Primary human VS cells were cultured on 96-well plates

Normal transcutaneous oxygen pressure in skin after radiation therapy for cancer.

BACKGROUND: Chronic deleterious changes in human skin after radiation therapy often have been ascribed to progressive ischemia (decreased blood supply and oxygenation). Recent studies suggest, however, that damaged irradiated skin is not ischemic. Transcutaneous oxygen pressure (TCPO2), that accurately reflects skin oxygenation, was studied in 100 patients who had undergone prior extensive radiation therapy for cancer. METHODS: In the 100 patients, the mean time since radiation was 7.86 +/- 10.56 years (mean, +/- SD) (range, 1-58 years). Radiation skin effects were graded (0-4+), and TCPO2 wa
