From detection to decision: a conceptual framework of uncertainty migration in disorders of consciousness.

Accurate assessment of consciousness in patients with disorders of consciousness (DoC) remains a longstanding challenge in neurocritical care and neurorehabilitation. Although standardized behavioral assessments continue to serve as the clinical foundation for diagnosis, their reliance on overt behavioral responses may underestimate residual consciousness in a subset of patients. Recent advances in multimodal neuroimaging and neurophysiological techniques have substantially expanded the capacity to detect covert consciousness, reducing some of the inherent limitations of behavioral assessment

Silencing of the T-type voltage-gated calcium channel α1 subunit by fungus-mediated RNAi altered the structure of F-actin and caused defective behaviors in Ditylenchus destructor.

BACKGROUND: T-type calcium channels, characterized as low-voltage activated (LVA) calcium channels, play crucial physiological roles across a wide range of tissues, including both the neuronal and nonneuronal systems. Using in situ hybridization and RNA interference (RNAi) techniques in vitro, we previously identified the tissue distribution and physiological function of the T-type calcium channel α1 subunit (DdCα1G) in the plant-parasitic nematode Ditylenchus destructor. METHODS AND RESULTS: To further characterize the functional role of DdCα1G, we employed a combination of immunohistochemis

Effect of Wolbachia Infection and Adult Food on the Sexual Signaling of Males of the Mediterranean Fruit Fly Ceratitis capitata.

Sexual signaling is a fundamental component of sexual behavior of Ceratitis capitata that highly determines males' mating success. Nutritional status and age are dominant factors known to affect males' signaling performance and define the female decision to accept a male as a sexual partner. Wolbachia pipientis, a widespread endosymbiotic bacterium of insects and other arthropods, exerts several biological effects on its hosts. However, the effects of Wolbachia infection on the sexual behavior of medfly and the interaction between Wolbachia infection and adult food remain unexplored. This stud

Development and Characterization of Novel Medicated Nanofiber for the Treatment of Periodontitis.

Periodontitis is a common microbial infection that involves pocket formation due to the destruction of periodontal ligament. The present work is oriented to provide a holistic approach for the treatment of periodontitis comprising localized delivery of nanometric hydroxyapatite as a reinforcing filler and silver-metronidazole as periodontal pocket disinfectant adjunct to current periodontal therapy because of its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and low systemic toxicity. In the present work, electrospinning technique was used to prepare medicated nanofiber enriched with antibacterial-hyd

Human brain activity response to fentanyl imaged by positron emission tomography.

Positron emission tomography (PET) is a noninvasive imaging technique that can be used to observe drug actions on human brain in vivo. We used 15O-water PET scanning in six volunteers to examine the effects on regional cerebral activity as reflected by regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) of a small intravenous bolus of fentanyl. rCBF was compared between scans obtained after fentanyl or a placebo using three separate statistical criteria including a pixel-by-pixel t statistic; significance was stringently defined at P values < 0.01. Anatomic locations of regional cerebral activity changes were

Terra Incognita - Contributions of the Olivo-Cerebellar System to Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The inferior olivary nuclei (ION), a key component of the olivo-cerebellar system, remain understudied in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) research despite evident cerebellar involvement. This perspective piece aims to elucidate the critical role of the ION in cerebellar microcircuitry and its potential implications in ASD pathophysiology. We review the olivo- cerebellar system and the structural and functional alterations of the ION in autism, highlighting findings from neuroanatomical, neuroimaging, and behavioral studies. ION disruptions, although underexplored, may have a major role in the s

Inorganic Scaling in Membrane Desalination: Models, Mechanisms, and Characterization Methods.

Inorganic scaling caused by precipitation of sparingly soluble salts at supersaturation is a common but critical issue, limiting the efficiency of membrane-based desalination and brine management technologies as well as other engineered systems. A wide range of minerals including calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate, and silica precipitate during membrane-based desalination, limiting water recovery and reducing process efficiency. The economic impact of scaling on desalination processes requires understanding of its sources, causes, effects, and control methods. In this Critical Review, we first

Online TG-FTIR-MS analysis of the catalytic pyrolysis of polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride microplastics.

Microplastics (MPs) are frequently detected in urban waters, which would pose a threat to human health through the food chain. Thus, efficient approaches to the elimination of MPs are urgently required. Pyrolysis is a powerful technique for the potential treatment of MPs. The online thermogravimetry-Fourier transform infrared reflection-Mass spectrometry (TG-FTIR-MS) is applied for tracking the pyrolysis process of representative polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) MPs in urban waters, together with or without the FeAlOx catalyst. TG could quantitatively determine the decomposition

Use of Super-Resolution Optical Microscopy To Reveal Direct Virus Binding at Hybrid Core-Shell Matrixes.

Polymer particles with antibody-like affinity, i.e., molecularly imprinted polymers, offer an ideal platform for biopharmaceutical virus purification. In recent years, attempts combining molecular imprinting technology with a variety of visualization and detection techniques have been reported for directly confirming the localized presence of the template. Direct target visualization is crucial for the characterization of molecularly imprinted polymers, especially if biological templates such as viruses are used. In the present study, for the first time the viral binding behavior at virus-impr

Osteochondral allograft transplantation in cartilage repair: Graft storage paradigm, translational models, and clinical applications.

The treatment of articular cartilage injury and disease has become an increasingly relevant part of orthopaedic care. Articular cartilage transplantation, in the form of osteochondral allografting, is one of the most established techniques for restoration of articular cartilage. Our research efforts over the last two decades have supported the transformation of this procedure from experimental "niche" status to a cornerstone of orthopaedic practice. In this Kappa Delta paper, we describe our translational and clinical science contributions to this transformation: (1) to enhance the ability of

School phobia.

Pediatricians and other primary care providers are in an ideal position to prevent, to diagnose and to treat children with school refusal. Detection requires recognition of high risk situations, and delineation of possible reality factors or environmental hazards. The physician will find school refusal associated with perceived or actual physical illness, debility, or vulnerability, family stresses including illnesses and marital problems, over-protective mother-child interaction patterns, and previous difficulties in achieving mother-child independence and separation. Confirming the diagnosis

Advanced Machine Learning Models for High-Temperature Magnetoresistivity Predictions of Ni81Fe19 Monolayers.

A 5 nm thick polycrystalline Ni81Fe19 film was sputter-deposited onto a circular 3-inch diameter, 390 μm thick single-crystal wafer with SiO2 surface layers. The magnetoresistance (MR) of the sample was analyzed as a function of applied DC magnetic field and temperature using the Van der Pauw technique. Magnetic measurements were carried out over a temperature range of 25 °C to 350 °C using a Lake Shore Hall Effect Measurement System (HEMS). An external magnetic field ranging from +14 kG to -14 kG was applied at each temperature value to observe changes in resistance. Hall coefficients and res

On the Pin-Bearing Strength of Additively Manufactured Polymer Parts.

Due to the wide scope of applications of additive manufacturing (AM) in making final products, the mechanical strength of AM parts has become very important. Therefore, different tests are being developed to determine the structural integrity of three-dimensional printed components. In this respect, the pin-bearing test is designed to evaluate the response of a fastener, plate, and hole to stress. In this study, two different polymer materials were used to fabricate the samples utilizing the fused deposition modeling technique. Since the specimen width and hole diameter have effects on the pin

A chaotic model for the epidemic of Ebola virus disease in West Africa (2013-2016).

An epidemic of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) broke out in Guinea in December 2013. It was only identified in March 2014 while it had already spread out in Liberia and Sierra Leone. The spill over of the disease became uncontrollable and the epidemic could not be stopped before 2016. The time evolution of this epidemic is revisited here with the global modeling technique which was designed to obtain the deterministic models from single time series. A generalized formulation of this technique for multivariate time series is introduced. It is applied to the epidemic of EVD in West Africa focusing on

Exploring frontal asymmetry using functional near-infrared spectroscopy: a preliminary study of the effects of social anxiety during interaction and performance tasks.

Preliminary studies examining brain function associated with social anxiety suggest the possibility of right-sided prefrontal activation associated with phobic stimulation. Although most existing neuroimaging techniques preclude participants from engaging in ecologically valid social tasks during assessment, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a promising new technique that permits such assessment. The present study investigated the utility of the fNIRS procedure and explored frontal asymmetry during in vivo social challenge tasks among female undergraduate students who scored in
