Impact of race and ethnicity on counseling for alcohol consumption: a population-based, cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Counseling for alcohol use is of proven utility, but whether disparities in provision of counseling exist is uncertain. METHODS: Using the 1999 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, a population-based telephone survey, we examined participant-reported physician counseling for alcohol use among 15,498 adults in 5 U.S. states. Participants reported their usual alcohol intake, risky drinking (intake of 5 or more drinks on occasion, greater than 60 drinks per month, or driving after drinking), and whether a doctor had spoken with them about alcohol use. RESULTS: Race and ethnic…

Bullying Victimization, Depressive Symptoms, and Suicide Among U.S. High School Adolescents: Protective Effects of School Connectedness and Parental Monitoring.

Suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) among U.S. adolescents remain a public health concern and are closely linked to bullying victimization and depressive symptoms. While protective factors such as school connectedness and parental monitoring may buffer these risks, their roles within integrated explanatory and predictive models remain insufficiently understood. Using data from the 2021 and 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (N = 37,335), this study examined how school connectedness and parental monitoring buffer the effects of bullying victimization and STBs among U.S. high school

Patterns of knowledge and condom use among population groups: results from the 2005 Ethiopian behavioral surveillance surveys on HIV.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral surveys help interpret the magnitude of HIV/AIDS. We analyzed indicators of knowledge on HIV/AIDS and condom use among sub populations selected for behavioral surveillance in Ethiopia. METHODS: We used 2005 HIV/AIDS behavioral data from ten target groups. These were female sex workers, defense forces, police force, pastoralists, truck drivers, intercity bus drivers, road construction workers, teachers, factory workers and people in ANC catchment areas. RESULTS: Data from 14,524 individuals were analyzed. The majority were males (63.6%). Overall, knowledge of the three

Barriers to Bacterial Sexually Transmitted Infection Testing of HIV-Infected Men Who Have Sex With Men Engaged in HIV Primary Care.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 15% of HIV-infected men who have sex with men (MSM) engaged in HIV primary care have been diagnosed as having a sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the past year, yet STI testing frequency remains low. METHODS: We sought to quantify STI testing frequencies at a large, urban HIV care clinic, and to identify patient- and provider-related barriers to increased STI testing. We extracted laboratory data in aggregate from the electronic medical record to calculate STI testing frequencies (defined as the number of HIV-infected MSM engaged in care who were tested at leas

Health Inequities among Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Adults in North Carolina, 2011-2014.

Inequalities in health have been identified for lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) populations nationally. Policies in the U.S. South offer fewer protections for LGB people than in other regions, yet, limited data exist for this region. North Carolina (NC) BRFSS data from 2011 to 2014 were combined (LGB n = 604; heterosexual n = 33,170) and analyzed using SAS survey procedures to estimate health characteristics by sexual orientation within gender. Many examined indicators were not different by sexual orientation, however, other results were significant and consistent with findings from state pop

Building and validating a machine learning model to predict coronary heart disease risk based on non-invasive indicators.

BACKGROUND: Coronary heart disease (CHD) remains a leading global cause of death. Early identification of high-risk individuals and timely intervention are crucial. This study developed and evaluated a predictive CHD risk model using machine learning (ML) techniques. METHODS: The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data were randomly split into a training set and an internal validation set in a 7:3 ratio. Variable screening was performed using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Subsequently, predictive models were developed using eight machine learning al…

Human Leptospirosis in Malaysia: Reviewing the Challenges After 8 Decades (1925-2012).

The history and epidemiology of human leptospirosis in Malaysia from 1925 to 2012 are described. Previous studies have demonstrated that leptospirosis is an endemic disease in Malaysia occurring in both urban and rural locations. The number of cases has risen dramatically since the Ministry of Health Malaysia highlighted leptospirosis as a notifiable disease in 2010, with reported cases increasing from 248 cases in 2004 to 3604 in 2012. The incidence of infection among the population suggests that occupation, sex, age, ethnic background, water recreational activities, and sporting events are r

State Clean Indoor Air Laws and smoking among adults with poor mental health.

Persons with mental illness smoke at twice the rate of the general United States (US) population and die an average of 25-years younger, often from preventable diseases. This study seeks to determine whether disparities in smoking have increased over the past decade and whether Clean Indoor Air Laws (CIALs) are associated with changes in smoking among those with poor mental health. We used a fixed-effects model for estimation. CIALs were associated with 15 per cent decreased odds of smoking among adults in the US. Among those with poor mental health, these same laws had no effect. Between 2000

To screen or not to screen: the issue of breast cancer screening in older women.

INTRODUCTION: The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends that women aged 50-69 receive timely breast cancer screening, but does not make a recommendation for women aged 70 and older. Our purpose is to assess the relationship between age and breast cancer screening trends, and to consider the issue of breast cancer screening of women 70 years of age and older in light of demographics, disease burden, life expectancy, and activity level. METHODS: Data were analyzed from the state-based Behvioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and the National Health Interview

Mortality and health outcomes associated with non-communicable disease risk factors: Protocol for the IRAN-STEPS Follow-Up Cohort (ISFUC) based on the 2021 national survey.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) account for more than 81% of all deaths in Iran and impose a substantial burden on the national health system. Although Iran has implemented multiple initiatives, including the World Health Organization's STEPwise Approach to NCD Risk Factor Surveillance (STEPS), to monitor NCD risk factors, critical gaps remain in longitudinal outcome assessment, particularly in the post-COVID-19 period, for which national data are limited. Moreover, in the context of declining fertility rates and demographic challenges in Iran, emerging evidence suggests that metabolic and li

Health access and prevention under Arkansas' market-based Medicaid expansion.

INTRODUCTION: Arkansas expanded Medicaid in 2014 using a Section 1115 waiver that included premium assistance for beneficiaries to purchase private plans through the state's marketplace. The waiver was modified in 2017 to require partial premium payments and implemented work requirements in mid-2018, which were later rescinded by federal court order. We compared healthcare access and preventive service utilization in Arkansas vs states with traditional Medicaid expansions. METHODS: Using Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data from 2011 to 2021, we applied difference-in-differences an…

Age-Dependent Differences in Frequent Mental Distress (FMD) of US Older Adults Living in Multigenerational Families versus Living Alone.

Frequent mental distress (FMD) is prevalent among older Americans, but less is known about disparities in FMD of older adults living in multigenerational families versus living alone. We pooled cross-sectional data (unweighted, n = 126,144) from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) between 2016 and 2020 and compared FMD (≥14 poor mental health days in the past 30 days = 1; 0 otherwise) of older adults (≥65 years) living in multigenerational families versus living alone in 36 states. After controlling for covariates, findings indicate 23% lower odds of FMD among older adults l…

Causal Effect of Tooth Loss on Cardiovascular Diseases.

Many studies suggest associations between oral health and cardiovascular diseases, but there is a lack of causal evidence. Exploiting exogenous variation in tooth loss in US adults due to differential childhood exposure to fluoridated water, this study investigated the causal effect of tooth loss on cardiovascular diseases. A total of 722,519 participants in the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) waves 2006, 2008, or 2010 (birth years 1940-1978) were included in the analytical sample. To identify the effect of tooth loss on having a history of coronary heart disease (CHD) or st…
