Positive effects of neuromuscular shoulder exercises with or without EMG-biofeedback, on pain and function in participants with subacromial pain syndrome - A randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The aim was to investigate the effect of Electromyography (EMG)-biofeedback guided exercises (BIONEX) on shoulder pain and function in participants with subacromial pain syndrome (SPS). METHODS: Twenty-five women and 24 men (19-67 years), diagnosed with SPS, were randomised to BIONEX or the same exercises without EMG-biofeedback (NEX). Primary outcome was shoulder pain during the past 7 days (Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS)). Secondary outcomes included self-reported (Disability of Arm Shoulder and Hand (DASH), Oxford Shoulder Score (OSS)), and measured shoulder function (surface

The feedback-related negativity reflects the binary evaluation of good versus bad outcomes.

Electrophysiological studies have utilized event-related brain potentials to study neural processes related to the evaluation of environmental feedback. In particular, the feedback-related negativity (FRN) has been shown to reflect the evaluation of monetary losses and negative performance feedback. Two experiments were conducted to examine whether or not the FRN is sensitive to the magnitude of negative feedback. In both experiments, participants performed simple gambling tasks in which they could receive a range of potential outcomes on each trial. Relative to feedback indicating monetary ga

[Drug treatment of migraine in children: state of the art].

Migraine, according to the criteria of the International Headache Society, occurs in about 5-10% of children. Preventive therapy includes identification of migraine precipitants, possible adjustments in lifestyle, appropriate management of acute headache, and when necessary the use of pharmacologic agents. It should be started if migraine attacks are severe or frequent. Non-pharmacologic prophylactic treatment is the modality of choice, based on relaxation or biofeedback. Despite its high incidence, only a few controlled trials have investigated the prophylactic treatment of migraine in childr

Pelvic floor spasms in children: an unknown condition responding well to pelvic floor therapy.

OBJECTIVE: During a study period of 4 years, 21 children are seen for night time pelvic pain. These children typical wake up in the middle of the night with severe lower abdominal or perineal pain. During day some of them suffer urge syndrome. During urodynamic investigation extremely high pelvic floor activity as recorded by high urethral pressure was observed in these children. We therefore started pelvic floor relaxation biofeedback in these children. METHODS: All children diagnosed with pelvic floor spasms underwent biofeedback pelvic floor relaxation therapy in order to learn them to cou

EEG and behavioral changes following neurofeedback treatment in learning disabled children.

Neurofeedback (NFB) is an operant conditioning procedure, by which the subject learns to control his/her EEG activity. On one hand, Learning Disabled (LD) children have higher values of theta EEG absolute and relative power than normal children, and on the other hand, it has been shown that minimum alpha absolute power is necessary for adequate performance. Ten LD children were selected with higher than normal ratios of theta to alpha absolute power (theta/alpha). The Test Of Variables of Attention (TOVA) was applied. Children were divided into two groups in order to maintain similar IQ values

A critical review of neuromuscular electrical stimulation for treatment of motor dysfunction in hemiplegia.

The purpose of this review is to critically assess the clinical efficacy of neuromuscular electrical stimulation in treating motor dysfunction in hemiplegia. Three distinct applications are reviewed in the areas of motor relearning, shoulder dysfunction, and neuroprostheses. Assessment of clinical efficacy and recommendations on clinical implementation are based on the weight of published scientific evidence. With respect to motor relearning, evidence supports the use of neuromuscular electrical stimulation to facilitate recovery of muscle strength and coordination in hemiplegia. However, effe

[Pelvic floor exercise and biofeedback in women with urinary stress incontinence].

Stress urinary incontinence is a medical and social problem. In the past decade there has been increased awareness of this condition and the number of those affected who seek help is increasing. Treatment is usually surgical-elevation of the bladder neck. Pelvic floor exercise is an accepted conservative treatment modality used for mild to moderate cases who have not yet completed their families. We present our results in 30 women, aged 28-71 years, av. 49% with genuine stress incontinence treated with pelvic floor exercise and biofeedback. 14 patients (46.7%) were completely cured and 15 (50%

Biofeedback-assisted relaxation training for young adolescents with tension-type headache: a controlled study.

Tension-type headache is common in children and adolescents and is generally treated with medication, but emerging literature suggests that various behavioral treatments may provide efficacious alternatives to medication. Juvenile tension-type headache sufferers were randomly assigned to biofeedback-assisted relaxation continued to improve and were superior to the control condition at a 6- and 12-month follow-up (86% versus 50%). Biofeedback-assisted relaxation appears to be an efficacious and durable treatment for juvenile tension-type headache and merits further exploration.

Reducing excessive vocal loudness in persons with mental retardation through the use of a portable auditory-feedback device.

A simple portable device was used to reduce excessive vocal loudness in two adults affected by moderate mental retardation. The device provided these adults with auditory feedback (a pulsating tone of about 300 Hz and 80 dB) when their vocal loudness exceeded a preset limit. Data showed that the device was effective in helping the two adults reduce their excessive vocal loudness. The use of the device continued to produce positive effects over time. Implications of these findings are discussed.

Long-term effects of neuromuscular rehabilitation of chronic facial paralysis.

Although chronic facial dysfunction can be improved with neuromuscular biofeedback therapy, it is uncertain whether this improvement is maintained after such therapy ends, or whether post-therapy, home exercise programs optimize this improvement. We aimed to clarify these issues. Post-therapy facial function, in 38 previously treated patients, was blindly assessed using the House grading system, 1 to 41 months after ending therapy. Results were compared with pre-therapy function. It was found that post-therapy function was better than pre-therapy function in most patients (40%), it was worse i

"Raynaud's disease" in migraineurs: one entity or two?

Two cases are reported of patients who were diagnosed as having both migraine and Raynaud's disease. Because they were able to achieve effective control of both headaches and extremity temperature after undergoing a comprehensive approach--utilizing medication, biofeedback, and psychotherapy--it is suggested that both conditions are manifestations of the same disorder. It is recommended that a first step in approaching concurrent diagnoses of this type involve combined treatment as is often used in response to the singular diagnosis of migraine.

Behavioral treatment of isolated systolic hypertension in the elderly.

Fifteen hypertensive patients were recruited from a geriatric medicine clinic for a "research project designed to evaluate a Behavioral Stepped-Care treatment program of high blood pressure (HBP)." All patients met the selection criteria of the Isolated Systolic Hypertension (ISH) in the Elderly (SHEP) clinical trial. During baseline, subjects recorded BP at home 9 times/day (3 times each, shortly after awakening, during the middle of the day, and within an hour of retiring) for 1 month and mailed that data to us daily. In addition, they came to the clinic weekly and had their BP recorded by a

A behavioral analysis of diaphragmatic breathing and its effects on peripheral temperature.

Three young women volunteers were trained through instructional feedback in two breathing procedures: diaphragmatic, derived from Eastern meditative techniques, and thoracic, involving opposite maneuvers. A single-subject reversal design was employed. Physiograph recordings of diaphragmatic expansion and mouth breathing provided the basis for feedback. Peripheral (digital) temperature was time-sampled at 1-min intervals and linear regression lines were fitted to the data. Temperature decreased throughout "normal" (baseline) breathing, probably due to warm outdoor and cool indoor temperatures.

Reducing motion sickness: a comparison of autogenic-feedback training and an alternative cognitive task.

Eighteen men were randomly assigned to three groups matched for susceptibility to Coriolis motion sickness. All subjects were given six Coriolis Sickness Susceptibility Index (CSSI) tests separated by 5-d intervals. Treatment Group I subjects were taught to control their own autonomic responses before the third, fourth, and fifth CSSI tests (6 h total training). Group II subjects were given "sham" training in an alternative cognitive task under conditions otherwise identical to those of Group I. Group III subjects received no treatment. Results showed that Group I subjects could withstand the

Biofeedback enhanced strabismus therapy.

Previous work, conducted under laboratory conditions, has shown that biofeedback using infrared eye position monitoring can be used to successfully treat strabismus. For the present study, seven matched pairs of strabismic patients were selected. One member of each pair received biofeedback enhanced vision therapy while the other member received traditional vision therapy. Cover test data obtained during each training session showed an advantage in using biofeedback enhanced training in several but not all cases. It is suggested that the optimum use of biofeedback may be prior to traditional t
