Effect of the Proximal Abducting Ulnar Osteotomy on Intra-Articular Pressure Distribution and Contact Mechanics of Congruent and Incongruent Canine Elbows Ex Vivo.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of the Proximal Abducting Ulnar Osteotomy (PAUL) on contact pressures of congruent and incongruent (short radius) canine elbows. STUDY DESIGN: Ex vivo biomechanical study. SAMPLE POPULATION: Unpaired normal cadaveric canine forelimbs (n=16). METHODS: A servohydraulic testing frame and thin-film sensors were utilized to measure intra-articular contact area (CA), mean contact pressure (mCP), and peak contact pressure (pCP) for medial and lateral elbow compartments. Percent contribution of the medial compartment relative to the whole (%Med) was also examined

Pericardial artery lymphoma in a patient with dermatomyositis: A case report.

A woman in her 60s presented with erythema on both elbows, dyspnea on exertion, discomfort, and swelling of the left upper extremity, followed by swelling and myalgia of the right upper and lower extremities. She was diagnosed with anti-transcriptional intermediary factor 1-γ antibody-positive dermatomyositis with interstitial pneumonia. The initial screening tests for malignant diseases including contrast-enhanced computed tomography, upper and lower endoscopy, and gynecological examination did not reveal any obvious abnormalities. The patient experienced two recurrent episodes of muscle weak

Localization of (99m)Tc HMDP in an extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma: a case report.

Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma of the lower extremity is rare, and slowly progressive. The authors of this article present the case of a man with progressive enlargement of the right thigh that underwent bone scintigraphy. The bone images showed a diffuse, moderate increase in uptake in the swollen right thigh. Despite chemotherapy, the patient died 28 mo later. At autopsy, it was confirmed that he had extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma of the right thigh, which had metastasized to the upper arms, left scapula, lungs, pleurae, and right lower quadrant of the abdomen. The myxoid chondroid

Early Return of Motion in Patients With Intramedullary Screw Placement for Metacarpal and Phalangeal Fracture Fixation.

INTRODUCTION: Hand fractures are associated with significant morbidity. Current management standards often result in prolonged immobilization, stiffness, and delayed return to functional use. Intramedullary (IM) compression screws offer minimal soft tissue disruption and early postoperative active motion. In this study, we describe our outcomes after intraosseous fracture fixation using IM cannulated headless screws for a multitude of fracture patterns. METHODS: This study is a retrospective review of patients who underwent IM screw placement for fixation of metacarpal and phalangeal fracture

Polytrauma Caused by a Bear Attacking a Human with a Benign Outcome.

Injuries to humans caused by wild animals, particularly bears, are rarely mentioned in the literature. Such injuries are frequent in Siberia, which is a territory surrounded by dense forests inhabited by brown bears. In the last 4 months alone (September-December 2023), four bear attacks on humans were registered in Khakassia, Russia. This article presents a clinical case of rehabilitating a patient after a bear attack, who suffered multiple fragmentary fractures of the facial skeleton with displaced bone fragments, subcutaneous emphysema of the soft tissues of the face, damage to the parietal

[Fracture diagnosis: upper extremities : Shoulder and shoulder girdle].

BACKGROUND: The shoulder girdle is a chain of bones and joints which connect the upper extremity to the axial skeleton. The shoulder as a biomechanical unit has a remarkable range of motion and is therefore frequently prone to injuries of the three major joints (sternoclavicular joint, acromioclavicular joint, glenohumeral joint) and the bony elements (clavicle, scapula, humerus). Projection radiography is still the first imaging modality for injuries of the shoulder and usually sufficient for initial diagnosis and injury classification. Computed tomography (including 3D reconstructions) and m

Colorectal adenocarcinoma presenting with a pathological fracture due to a solitary bone metastasis to the tibia: a case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Solitary bone metastasis of colorectal carcinoma (CRC) without other metastasis sites is extremely rare and can be found in less than 1% of patients with CRC. AIM: In the present study, we report the first case of a solitary tibia metastasis and its pathologic fracture as the first presenting feature of a colorectal adenocarcinoma. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 78-year-old female patient presented to our emergency department due to atraumatic pretibial swelling. Plain radiography did not detect any pathology. The swelling was incised and serous-bloody collection was evacuated, and th

Adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder (frozen shoulder) produces bone loss in the affected humerus, but long-term bony recovery is good.

The objective of the study was to assess the short- and long-term effects of adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder) on the bone mineral density (BMD) of the affected extremity. BMD and clinical status of 22 patients (group A) with active-phase unilateral adhesive capsulitis and 31 patients (group B) with a previous adhesive capsulitis (average 9 years before the examination) were determined. BMD was measured from the proximal humerus, humeral shaft, radial shaft, ulnar shaft, and distal forearm of both upper extremities using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). In group A, the mean BMD of t

Lineage-Specific Wnt Reporter Elucidates Mesenchymal Wnt Signaling during Bone Repair.

β-Catenin-dependent Wnt signaling controls numerous aspects of skeletal development and postnatal bone repair. Currently available transgenic Wnt reporter mice allow for visualization of global canonical Wnt signaling activity within skeletal tissues, without delineation of cell type. This is particularly important in a bone repair context, in which the inflammatory phase can obscure the visualization of mesenchymal cell types of interest. To tackle the issue of tissue-specific Wnt signaling, we have generated and characterized a transgenic mouse strain [termed paired related homeobox 1 (Prx1)

Upper extremity injuries in the adolescent athlete.

There has been a significant increase in youth sports participation and athletic activities over the past 3 decades. With the increase in participation, there has been a commensurate rise in the number of sports-related injuries. A majority of these injuries are due to overuse as athletes frequently compete in multiple sports with year round competition and training. As higher demands are placed on these young athletes, the likelihood of injury during and individual's playing career continues to increase. This review will focus on both overuse and traumatic injuries of the upper extremity in t

Aneurysmal bone cyst of the paediatric shoulder girdle: a case series and literature review.

Limited research has analysed paediatric shoulder girdle aneurysmal bone cyst management and outcomes. This study analysed locations affected, investigations, treatments and recurrence in children treated at the London Bone Tumour Unit between 1998 and 2004 and in English and French literature between 1956 and 2004. The proximal humerus and clavicle are most frequently affected whereas scapula involvement is rare. Radiographs, computed tomography and MRI are valuable. Sole curettage of clavicle and scapula lesions has low recurrence rates. Proximal humerus lesions recur most frequently. Curett

Neurodynamic Exercises in College Athletes With Musculoskeletal Pain: A Critically Appraised Topic.

CLINICAL SCENARIO: Pain is a common complaint following an orthopedic injury; however, the exact cause of nociception can be complex. Multiple tissues can generate a patient's complaint of pain, such as the skin, muscle, ligaments, tendon, nerves, and bones. Regarding the somatosensory system, inflammation around the nerve can create pain and alter movement coordination; this information has resulted in increased awareness of neurodynamic assessments and exercises. Neurodynamic assessments and exercises provide a unique paradigm to effectively assess and treat neural tissue, which may not comm

Current strategies for the treatment of solitary and aneurysmal bone cysts: A review of the literature.

This review of the literature aims to compare the etiology, the pathogenesis, the clinical diagnostics and the relevant treatment options of two different types of cystic bone lesions: the solitary bone cyst (SBC) and the aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC). Whereas the clinical symptoms and the radiographic appearance can be similar, the diagnostic pathway and the treatment options are clearly different. The solitary bone cyst (SBC) represents a tumor-like bone lesion, occurring most frequently in the humerus and femur in children and adolescents. Pain caused by intercurrent pathological fractures is

Pycnodysostosis with extreme sleep apnea: a possible alternative to tracheotomy.

PURPOSE: Pycnodysostosis (OMIM:265800) is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder due to a mutation in the cathepsin K gene, which causes a decrease of the bone turnover and a deterioration of the bone structure. Our aim was to describe a 5 year-old patient affected by pycnodysostosis, associated with an extremely severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, who was treated effectively with a combination of upper airway surgery and positive pressure ventilation. METHODS: A 5 year-old child affected by pycnodysostosis was referred to us for failure to thrive, facial dysmorphisms and respiratory di
