C-reactive protein attenuates CCl4-induced acute liver injury by regulating complement system activation.

Acute liver injury is liver dysfunction caused by multiple factors without any pre-existing liver disease. C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute-phase protein produced by hepatocytes, serving as a marker of inflammation and tissue damage. However, its role in CCl4-induced acute liver injury has not been elucidated. Here, we report that CRP protects against CCl4-induced acute liver injury by regulating complement activation. CRP knockout exacerbates CCl4-induced acute liver injury in mice and rats, markedly enhances tissue damage, and reduces survival. Administration of exogenous CRP to CRP-knoc…

Association between C-reactive protein to lymphocyte ratio and gallstones: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation plays a key role in the development of gallstones, and the C-reactive protein to lymphocyte ratio (CLR) has been introduced as a promising biomarker for evaluating inflammatory processes. Nonetheless, its correlation with gallstone prevalence remains ambiguous. This study aims to evaluate the potential link between CLR levels and gallstone prevalence. METHODS: This study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, covering the periods from March 2017 to 2020 and 2021 to 2023. Multivariate logistic regression was employed to examine the ass…

C-Reactive Protein-based Screening of People with Tuberculosis Symptoms: A Diagnostic Accuracy Study.

Rationale: C-reactive protein (CRP)-based tuberculosis (TB) screening is recommended for people with HIV. However, its performance among people without HIV and in diverse settings is unknown. Objectives: In a multicountry study, we aimed to determine whether CRP meets the minimum accuracy targets (sensitivity ⩾ 90%, specificity ⩾ 70%) for an effective TB screening test. Methods: Consecutive outpatient adults with cough ⩾2 weeks from five TB endemic countries in Africa and Asia had baseline blood collected for point-of-care CRP testing and HIV and diabetes screening. Sputum samples were collect…

Lipoprotein(a), C-Reactive Protein, and Cardiovascular Risk in Primary and Secondary Prevention Populations.

IMPORTANCE: Elevated lipoprotein(a) (Lp[a]) is a putative causal risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). There are conflicting data as to whether Lp(a) may increase cardiovascular risk only in the presence of concomitant inflammation. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether Lp(a) is associated with cardiovascular risk independent of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in both primary and secondary prevention populations. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study uses data from 3 distinct cohorts, 1 population-based cohort and 2 randomized clinical trials…

Synergistic effect of periodontitis and C-reactive protein levels on mortality: NHANES 2001-2004.

Periodontitis is associated with elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. Although the coexistence of periodontitis and elevated CRP levels may heighten the risk of mortality, previous studies have not confirmed their synergistic effect. Understanding this interaction is crucial for identifying potential interventions to reduce mortality risk in individuals with periodontitis. This study aimed to assess the synergistic effects of periodontitis and elevated CRP levels on mortality in 7,938 adult individuals who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Study 2001-2004. The …

Association between C-reactive protein and sarcopenia: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

C-reactive protein (CRP), a clinical biomarker, is frequently used to evaluate the inflammatory status of the body. However, the association between CRP levels and sarcopenia among the general adult population in the USA is unknown. This study focused on assessing whether CRP levels were associated with sarcopenia. This cross-sectional study collected adult data of adults from the 2015 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Four-extremity total muscle mass was used to evaluate sarcopenia (appendicular lean mass). In addition, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was adopted to m…

C-Reactive protein and cognition: Mediation analyses with brain morphology in the UK Biobank.

Cognitive impairments and abnormal immune activity are both associated with various clinical disorders. The association between C-Reactive protein (CRP), a marker associated with inflammation, and cognitive performance remains unclear. Further, mechanisms potentially linking CRP to cognition are not yet established. Brain structure may well mediate this relationship: immune processes play crucial roles in shaping and maintaining brain structure, with brain structure and function driving cognition. The United Kingdom Biobank (UKBB) is a large cohort study with extensive assessments, including h…

Do Elevated Serum C-Reactive-Protein Levels Excuse Delayed Surgery for Femoral Neck Fractures?

In elderly patients with femoral neck fractures, preoperative serum C-reactive protein (CRP) values might be elevated due to active infections. Although there are limited data on CRP as a predictor of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI), out of concern, this could lead to delayed surgery. Therefore, we aim to investigate whether elevated serum-CRP levels justify delayed surgery for femoral neck fractures. A retrospective analysis was performed of the records of patients undergoing arthroplasty who were found to have an elevated CRP level of 5 mg/dL or more between January 2011 to December 202…

Influence of Hypersensitive C-Reactive Protein on the Effect of Continuous Antihypertensive Pharmacological Therapy.

Systemic chronic inflammation, represented by hypersensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP), is an essential contributing factor to hypertension. However, the influence of hsCRP levels on the effect of antihypertensive pharmacological therapy remains unknown. We evaluated hsCRP levels in 3756 newly diagnosed, untreated hypertensive subjects. Participants were grouped by tertiles of hsCRP and were randomly treated with nitrendipine + captopril, nitrendipine + spironolactone hydrochlorothiazide + captopril, and hydrochlorothiazide + spironolactone. Blood pressure (BP) was recorded every 2 weeks. A m…

Vitamin D epimers are associated with circulating haemoglobin levels independently of C-reactive protein.

Vitamin D deficiency has been shown to be associated with anaemia. Circulating 25(OH)D consists of both epimeric and nonepimeric forms. However, the relative roles of epimeric and nonepimeric vitamin D in regulating anaemia and haemoglobin levels remain unknown. Therefore, in this study, we examined the effect of vitamin D, including its epimers, on haemoglobin levels, independently of its effect on circulating high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP). This was a cross-sectional study of 1655 subjects from a long-term follow-up cohort at the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand. Ven…

Monomeric C-Reactive Protein - A Feature of Inflammatory Disease Associated With Cardiovascular Pathophysiological Complications?

Monomeric C-reactive protein (mCRP), the dissociated form of native C-reactive protein, is a critical molecule that causes and perpetuates inflammation in serious diseases. It has 'adhesive'-like properties causing aggregation of blood cells and platelets, and can stick permanently within arterial tissue where it can contribute to further complications including thrombosis, linking it potentially to atherosclerosis and subsequent acute coronary events. In this mini review, we discuss briefly the implications and the potential value of measuring and manipulating it for clinical diagnostics and …
