Surface Halogen Passivation Enables Ultra-Stable Metal Sulfide for Efficient Methanol Photoactivation.

Transition metal sulfides exhibit promising photocatalytic activity for high-value-added chemical synthesis; however, they suffer from significant photocorrosion and rapid deactivation during reactions. In this study, we propose a surface halogen (Cl, Br, and I) passivation strategy to improve the stability of photocatalysts, which would provide a protective barrier against chemical attack, preventing oxidative and reductive surface degradation. By taking the typical metal sulfide catalysts of CdS as a representative model, we show that the introduced surface halogen can effectively suppress s

[Celiac disease and its diagnostic evolution. Comparisons and experiences in a hospital pediatric department (1975-1992). I].

The coeliac disease (CD) or gluten-sensitive enteropathy (GSE) is a permanent intolerance to wheat gliadin and to correlated proteins inducing malabsorption and typical damages of the jejunal mucosa (total or subtotal villous atrophy = SVA) in genetically-predisposed individuals ("DQW2"). A large amount of research has been devoted to CD pathogenesis: the most recent studies, thanks to sophisticated and experimental methods, support the pathogenetic immunological theory and the one of direct cytotoxicity. The correct diagnostic procedure for CD, established in 1970 by the European Society for

Singing and Speaking Ability in Parkinson's Disease and Spinocerebellar Ataxia.

PURPOSE: This study examined spontaneous, spoken-to-a-model, and two sung modes in speakers with Parkinson's disease (PD), speakers with cerebellar disease (CD), and healthy controls. Vocal performance was measured by intelligibility scores and listeners' perceptual ratings. METHOD: Participants included speakers with hypokinetic dysarthria secondary to PD, those with ataxic dysarthria secondary to CD, and healthy speakers. Participants produced utterances in four vocal modes: spontaneous speech, spoken-to-a-model, sung-to-a-model, and spontaneous singing. For spoken-to-a-model and sung-to-a-

Paroxysmal Discharges in Tissue Slices From Pediatric Epilepsy Surgery Patients: Critical Role of GABAB Receptors in the Generation of Ictal Activity.

In the present study, we characterized the effects of bath application of the proconvulsant drug 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) alone or in combination with GABAA and/or GABAB receptor antagonists, in cortical dysplasia (CD type I and CD type IIa/b), tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), and non-CD cortical tissue samples from pediatric epilepsy surgery patients. Whole-cell patch clamp recordings in current and voltage clamp modes were obtained from cortical pyramidal neurons (CPNs), interneurons, and balloon/giant cells. In pyramidal neurons, bath application of 4-AP produced an increase in spontaneous s

IgA antibodies of coeliac disease patients recognise a dominant T cell epitope of A-gliadin.

BACKGROUND: In coeliac disease (CD) patients, the dominant DQ2-Alpha-I-gliadin peptide recognised by CD4 T cells is contained within peptide sequence 57-73 (p57-73) of Alpha-gliadin. This peptide sequence is also located within a 33-mer protease resistant gliadin fragment and therefore is likely to play an important role in the pathogenesis of CD. AIMS: Our aim was to determine whether a B cell epitope was present within the immunodominant T cell epitope of Alpha-gliadin and, if so, to elucidate its sequence and determine the importance of deamidation and/or modification of the amino acid at

Expression of human cytochrome P450 1A1 in DNA repair deficient and proficient human fibroblasts stably transformed with an inducible expression vector.

Cytochromes P450 catalyze the bioactivation of many carcinogens. In particular, cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1) catalyzes the conversion of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, such as benzo[a]pyrene, into potent mutagenic agents. Human skin fibroblasts, both DNA repair deficient (xeroderma pigmentosum group A: XPA) and DNA repair normal have been co-transformed with a chimeric gene construct containing human CYP1A1 coding sequences controlled by the cadmium (Cd) ion inducible mouse metallothionein-I promoter and pRSV-NEO, a dominant selectable marker for G418 resistance. Individual G418 resistant c

Linking the concentrations of itraconazole and 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin in human intestinal fluids after oral intake of Sporanox®.

In a previously performed small-scale clinical study, healthy volunteers were asked to ingest an oral solution of itraconazole (Sporanox®) containing 40% 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) (i) with or (ii) without a standardized volume of water (240 mL) after which gastrointestinal and blood samples were collected. Although omitting water during the administration of Sporanox® resulted in noticeably higher duodenal concentrations of itraconazole, systemic exposure was almost unaffected. It is assumed that this discrepancy can be explained by differences in the extent of entrapment of itr

Caging Polyhalide Anions in Polycyclodextrin for Long-Lasting Aqueous Zinc-Iodine Batteries.

Confining polyiodide species at the cathode is pivotal to the stability and long life of aqueous zinc-iodine batteries (AZIBs). Current approaches using porous inorganic materials to physically trap polyiodide species or organic additives to electrostatically bind them remain ineffective due to size mismatches or weak ionic interactions. Here, we introduce a host-guest strategy to cage polyhalides while enabling their transport between niches within a cross-linked polycyclodextrin (polyCD) network. Experimental and computational results indicate that the polymer derived from β-CD exhibits a mo

Participation of autophagy in storage of lysosomes in neurons from mouse models of neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinoses (Batten disease).

In cathepsin D-deficient (CD-/-) and cathepsins B and L double-deficient (CB-/-CL-/-) mice, abnormal vacuolar structures accumulate in neurons of the brains. Many of these structures resemble autophagosomes in which part of the cytoplasm is retained but their precise nature and biogenesis remain unknown. We show here how autophagy contributes to the accumulation of these vacuolar structures in neurons deficient in cathepsin D or both cathepsins B and L by demonstrating an increased conversion of the molecular form of MAP1-LC3 for autophagosome formation from the cytosolic form (LC3-I) to the m

Esophagogastric junction morphology is associated with a positive impedance-pH monitoring in patients with GERD.

BACKGROUND: High-resolution manometry (HRM) provides information on esophagogastric junction (EGJ) morphology, distinguishing three different subtypes. Data on the correlation between EGJ subtypes and impedance-pH detected reflux patterns are lacking. We aimed to correlate the EGJ subtypes with impedance-pH findings in patients with reflux symptoms. METHODS: Consecutive patients with suspected gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) were enrolled. All patients underwent HRM and impedance-pH testing off-therapy. EGJ was classified as: Type I, no separation between the lower esophageal sphincter

Cathepsin D deficiency induces lysosomal storage with ceroid lipofuscin in mouse CNS neurons.

Cathepsin D-deficient (CD-/-) mice have been shown to manifest seizures and become blind near the terminal stage [approximately postnatal day (P) 26]. We therefore examined the morphological, immunocytochemical, and biochemical features of CNS tissues of these mice. By electron microscopy, autophagosome/autolysosome-like bodies containing part of the cytoplasm, granular osmiophilic deposits, and fingerprint profiles were demonstrated in the neuronal perikarya of CD-/- mouse brains after P20. Autophagosomes and granular osmiophilic deposits were detected in neurons at P0 but were few in number,

Examination of the Reaction of Escherichia coli Cytochrome bd-I in the Fully Reduced State with Cyanide Using Absorption and Circular Dichroism Spectroscopy.

We have earlier begun to investigate the reaction of isolated solubilized dithionite-reduced cytochrome bd-I of Escherichia coli with cyanide [Borisov, V. B., and Arutyunyan, A. M. (2024) The fully reduced terminal oxidase bd-I isolated from Escherichia coli binds cyanide, J. Inorg. Biochem., 259, 112653]. The present work is a continuation of this study. Using absorption and CD spectroscopy, the following new results were obtained: (i) The membrane form of the fully reduced enzyme is also capable of binding cyanide. The apparent dissociation constant and second-order rate constant values are

Liver cell proliferation and incidence of hepatocellular carcinomas in rats fed consecutively a choline-devoid and a choline-supplemented diet.

A group-set of male Fischer 344 rats was kept on a choline-devoid (CD) diet for 3, 6, 9, 12 or 16 months. A second set was fed the same diet for 3, 6 and 9 months, followed by a control, choline-supplemented diet for 3 months. A third set was fed the CD diet for 0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months and the control diet for the duration (16 months) of the experiment. [3H]Thymidine was injected into some of the animals to assess the extent of liver cell proliferation. In the latter animals, liver triacylglycerols were also determined as an index of the hepatonecrogenic action of a CD diet. Foci of enzyme-al
