In recognition of a central role of the kidney in long-term blood pressure control, we undertook an in-depth analysis of the relationship between blood pressure and kidney damage caused by environmental exposure to the common pollutants cadmium and lead. CASE REPORT: We report the observation of a 59-year-old woman with a long unprotected professional exposure to cadmium. She developed an epidermoid carcinoma of the kidney and later of the lung. In our study we investigated 36 out-patients with renal disease, 22 of whom were hypertensive. In all patients proteinuria was present (4.30 +/- 5.05 g protein/day) and kidney diseases were verified by renal biopsy.
