Diascopy and histopathological evaluation of nonblanching erythematous dermatoses in dogs.

Subepidermal Calcified Nodule in a Child With Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

Calcinosis cutis (CC) is characterized by calcium deposition in the subcutaneous tissues. Subepidermal calcified nodule (SCN) is a variant of idiopathic calcinosis most commonly seen in the head and neck region of children and adolescents as a single, small, painless, yellow-white papule. A 13-year-old boy with a medical history of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) presented with a firm 0.3 cm white papule in the lower eyelid. He also had neurofibromas of the left forearm and spinal cord, and a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor of the right forearm. The eyelid lesion showed hyperkeratotic e…

Idiopathic Conjunctival Calcinosis Associated With an Intradermal and Subepithelial Nevus of the Eyelid Margin.

A 37-year-old woman underwent excision of a congenital melanocytic nevus of the right lower eyelid margin for cosmetic reasons. She suffered from a severe dry eye syndrome which was partially alleviated with various topical eye drops. Histopathology of the excised tissue displayed flecks of calcium that were present within the immediate subepithelial conjunctival fibrous tissue but not the nevocytes or the cutaneous surface. Unlike calcinosis cutis, wherein calcium is deposited within the cutaneous dermis, calcification of the conjunctival substantia propria is rare and may be related to the d…

Multiple Asymptomatic Juxta-Articular Nodules Mimicking Tuberous-Xanthoma-A Unusual Presentation of Tophaceous Gout.

Asymptomatic, juxta-articular nodules are an uncommon morphology, which is usually diagnosed as xanthomas, calcinosis cutis or rheumatoid nodules. This study was represented as a case of gout, which is a disorder of purine metabolism resulting in elevation of serum uric acid and deposition of monosodium urate crystals within and around joints and manifests clinically as inflammatory arthritis. Urate crystal deposits have also been found in tendons, ligaments, viscera, and the skin, with the term "tophi" being used for the non-articular deposits. In the chronic stage, the lesion can be asymptom…

Paediatric subepidermal calcified nodule of the ear.

Subepidermal calcified nodules are benign entities that can be seen in the head and neck region and are part of a family of calcifying disorders known as calcinosis cutis, in which calcium is deposited in subcutaneous tissue. We describe a middle aged childhood boy with a rapidly enlarging ear mass of unknown aetiology who presents for otolaryngologic evaluation. In this case, surgical excision provided both definitive diagnosis and sufficient treatment. Although uncommon, it is important to recognise these lesions in order to appropriately counsel patients on management options and rule out u…

Cranial nerve VIII involvement in a patient with progressive systemic sclerosis.

Systemic sclerosis is a multisystem disorder characterized by abundant fibrosis of the skin, blood vessels, and visceral organs. Cranial nerve involvement is an uncommon feature of this connective tissue disorder, and when it occurs it is the trigeminal nerve that is primarily affected. We report an elderly woman who presented with sensorineural hearing loss and was then diagnosed with the CREST syndrome of progressive systemic sclerosis (calcinosis cutis, Raynaud's phenomenon, esophageal dysfunction, sclerodactyly, and telangiectasia). Involvement of the eighth cranial nerve with scleroderma …

Oral mucosal calcified nodule requiring palatoplasty.

Calcinosis cutis describes a condition of pathologic calcium deposition in the dermis. Several subtypes exist, including the subepidermal calcified nodule. The oral mucosal calcified nodule (OMCN) was posited in 1992 as a specific term for a subepidermal calcified nodule occurring in the oral cavity, and since that time only six such lesions have been described in the literature. This report explores a case of OMCN on the palate of a 3-month-old infant with the goal of supplementing extant literature, providing a consideration of the differentials of palatal lesions in the pediatric population…

Bilateral symmetrical subepidermal calcified nodules of the eyelids.

A subepidermal calcified nodule is an uncommon variant of calcinosis cutis and only a limited number of cases have been reported about the eyelid nodules in the literature. A 20-year-old male was referred to our department with symmetrical nodules on both upper eyelids enlarging over 3 years. Both nodules were removed by excisional biopsy. After the histopathologic evaluation, the diagnosis was subepidermal calcified nodule. He had a complete recovery with no recurrence and acceptable aesthetic appearance. As a rare entity, subepidermal calcified nodule should be thought in differential diagno…

[Filgotinib treatment of calcinosis in centromere-antibody-positive systemic sclerosis].

Centromere-antibody-positive limited cutaneous systemic sclerosis (LCSSc) is a common disease. It generally takes a benign course, but can still considerably reduce quality of life. Our patient-a woman born in 1987 who was first diagnosis 2017-suffered from pain and declining hand function due to sclerodactyly and calcinosis. Methotrexate (MTX) and analgesics were not effective. After commencing off-label treatment with filgotinib, the patient reported rapid improvement. An X-ray after 8 months showed a reduction in calcinosis load. Filgotinib is well tolerated. Sclerodactyly has resolved, and

Bilateral leg ulcers secondary to dystrophic calcinosis in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis.

Calcinosis cutis can be classified into four subtypes: dystrophic, metastatic, idiopathic, and iatrogenic. Of these subtypes, dystrophic calcinosis (DC) is the most common, and is most frequently associated with connective tissue disease, particularly dermatomyositis and systemic sclerosis, and less commonly with systemic lupus erythematosus. However, DC associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is extremely rare. In this paper, we present a Japanese woman with RA, who suffered from bilateral leg ulcers secondary to DC. To the best of our knowledge, only two cases of DC associated with RA have…

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) can be a component of a collision tumor in which the skin cancer is present at the same cutaneous site as either a benign tumor or a malignant neoplasm. These include autoimmune diseases (vitiligo), cutaneous disorders (Darier disease), dermal conditions (granuloma faciale), dermal depositions (amyloid, calcinosis cutis, cutaneous focal mucinosis, osteoma cutis, and tattoo), dermatitis, miscellaneous conditions (rhinophyma, sarcoidal reaction, and varicose vein…
