OBJECTIVES: I explored the hypothesis that economic activity has a significant impact on exposure to air pollution and ultimately human health.
METHODS: I used county-level employment statistics in California (1980-2000), along with major regulatory periods and other controlling factors, to estimate local concentrations of the coefficient of haze, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen dioxide using a mixed regression model approach.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to analyze the association between hospital obstetric volume and perinatal outcomes in California.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study of births occurring in California in 2006. Hospitals were divided into 4 obstetric volume categories. Unadjusted rates of neonatal mortality and birth asphyxia were calculated for each category, overall and among term deliveries with birthweight >2500 g. BACKGROUND: Prevalences of NTDs are typically 50-100% greater among Hispanic women compared to non-Hispanic Whites. This article examines whether markers of acculturation such as "language preference" allow the identification of high-risk groups within the Hispanic population. It also examines whether known NTD risk factors explain observed differences in risk among Hispanic women who are more and less acculturated.

Prevalence of Lyme borreliosis in canine sentinels has been shown to correlate with infection in humans. One thousand canine sera (917 dogs, 83 coyotes) obtained from animal control authorities and area veterinarians were screened by ELISA for antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi. Results were validated by Western blot and indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) tests at referee laboratories.
