Face selective patches in marmoset frontal cortex.

In humans and macaque monkeys, socially relevant face processing is accomplished via a distributed functional network that includes specialized patches in frontal cortex. It is unclear whether a similar network exists in New World primates, who diverged ~35 million years from Old World primates. The common marmoset is a New World primate species ideally placed to address this question given their complex social repertoire. Here, we demonstrate the existence of a putative high-level face processing network in marmosets. Like Old World primates, marmosets show differential activation in anterior

Spatial organization of occipital white matter tracts in the common marmoset.

The primate brain contains a large number of interconnected visual areas, whose spatial organization and intracortical projections show a high level of conservation across species. One fiber pathway of recent interest is the vertical occipital fasciculus (VOF), which is thought to support communication between dorsal and ventral visual areas in the occipital lobe. A recent comparative diffusion MRI (dMRI) study reported that the VOF in the macaque brain bears a similar topology to that of the human, running superficial and roughly perpendicular to the optic radiation. The present study reports

Macroscale cortical organization and a default-like apex transmodal network in the marmoset monkey.

Networks of widely distributed regions populate human association cortex. One network, often called the default network, is positioned at the apex of a gradient of sequential networks that radiate outward from primary cortex. Here, extensive anatomical data made available through the Marmoset Brain Architecture Project are explored to show a homologue exists in marmoset. Results reveal that a gradient of networks extend outward from primary cortex to progressively higher-order transmodal association cortex in both frontal and temporal cortex. The apex transmodal network comprises frontopolar a

Semi-chronic laminar recordings in the brainstem of behaving marmoset monkeys.

BACKGROUND: Chronic recordings with multi-electrode arrays are widely used to study neural networks underlying complex primate behaviors. Most of these systems are designed for studying neural activity in the cortical hemispheres resulting in a lack of devices being capable of simultaneously recording from ensembles of neurons in deep brainstem structures. However, to fully understand complex behavior, it is fundamental to also decipher the intrinsic mechanisms of the underlying motor pattern generating circuits in the brainstem. NEW METHOD: We report a light-weight system that simultaneously

Reduced post-stroke glial scarring in the infant primate brain reflects age-related differences in the regulation of astrogliosis.

Ischemic stroke remains a leading cause of disability worldwide. Surviving patients often suffer permanent neurological impairments, and spontaneous recovery rarely occurs. However, observations that early-life brain injuries, including strokes, elicit less severe long-term functional impairments, compared to adults, continue to intrigue. While much research has focussed on neuronal changes and plasticity, less is known regarding the regulation of astrogliosis and glial scar formation after a stroke at different stages of life. Therefore, we investigated the cellular, molecular and temporal di

Ribbon scanning confocal for high-speed high-resolution volume imaging of brain.

Whole-brain imaging is becoming a fundamental means of experimental insight; however, achieving subcellular resolution imagery in a reasonable time window has not been possible. We describe the first application of multicolor ribbon scanning confocal methods to collect high-resolution volume images of chemically cleared brains. We demonstrate that ribbon scanning collects images over ten times faster than conventional high speed confocal systems but with equivalent spectral and spatial resolution. Further, using this technology, we reconstruct large volumes of mouse brain infected with encepha

Voxel-based morphometry of the marmoset brain: In vivo detection of volume loss in the substantia nigra of the MPTP-treated Parkinson's disease model.

Movement dysfunction in Parkinson's disease (PD) is caused by the degeneration of dopaminergic (DA) neurons in the substantia nigra (SN). Here, we established a method for voxel-based morphometry (VBM) and automatic tissue segmentation of the marmoset monkey brain using a 7-T animal scanner and applied the method to assess DA degeneration in a PD model, 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-treated animals, with tyrosine-hydroxylase staining. The most significant decreases of local tissue volume were detected in the bilateral SN of MPTP-treated marmoset brains (-53.0% in right an

Multiple vaccine and pyridostigmine interactions: effects on EEG and sleep in the common marmoset.

Following active service during the 1990/1991 Gulf conflict, a number of UK and US veterans presented with a diverse range of symptoms, collectively known as Gulf Veterans' Illnesses (GVI). The administration of vaccines and/or the pretreatment against possible nerve agent poisoning, pyridostigmine bromide (PB), given to Armed Forces personnel during the Gulf conflict has been implicated as a possible factor in the aetiology of these illnesses. The possibility that long-term health effects may result from the administration of these vaccines (anthrax, pertussis, plague, yellow fever, polio, ty

Mild topographical memory impairment following crossed unilateral lesions of the mediodorsal thalamic nucleus and the inferotemporal cortex.

Monkeys with crossed unilateral lesions of the dorsomedial thalamus and contralateral ablations of the inferotemporal cortex were mildly impaired on acquisition and retention of visual conditional tasks requiring the integration of information about objects and their positions in space. They were not impaired on other conditional and nonconditional tasks. This impairment pattern resembles, qualitatively, that found following crossed unilateral lesions of the anterior thalamus and the inferotemporal cortex or bilateral lesions of the anterior and mediodorsal thalamic nuclei. Although the flow o

Implantation in the marmoset monkey: expansion of the early implantation site.

This study was initiated to examine the early stages of trophoblast adhesion and invasion during implantation in the marmoset. Seven implantation sites were found in the uteri of four marmosets taken between days 13 and 15 of gestation. Three implantation sites in two uteri were examined in detail by electron microscopy. Between days 13 and 15, the marmoset implantation site expanded peripherally by adding areas where syncytial trophoblast penetrated between uterine luminal epithelial cells. Such penetrating masses often bridged openings of endometrial glands, shared junctional complexes with

[Application of the common marmoset to pharmacological studies].

Application of the common marmoset to pharmacological studies was reviewed, especially employment of the animal as a model of Parkinson's disease were presented. The common marmoset is one of the New World monkeys with a body weight of 300-350 g. It is small enough to be easily handled and to be kept as a group in a room. In the fields of pharmacology, it has been used in studies of plasma renin activity inhibitors, lipoprotein, memory/learning, obstetrics, transplantation, toxicology, anxiolytic agents and virology/immunology. We showed that the common marmoset was a useful animal for studies

Experimental infection of the marmoset genital tract with Chlamydia trachomatis.

A strain of Chlamydia trachomatis isolated in McCoy cells from the urethra of a patient suffering from non-gonococcal urethritis was inoculated into the vagina of 8 female marmosets. Chlamydiae were isolated repeatedly for 10-42 days from the lower genital tract of 7 of the marmosets. Six of the infected animals developed an acute inflammatory reaction in the genital tract and chlamydial inclusions in epithelial cells were seen in smears from 2 of them. In addition, each of 6 infected marmosets examined developed humoral antibodies to C. trachomatis. In contrast, 3 control animals inoculated i

Intrinsic functional clustering of anterior cingulate cortex in the common marmoset.

The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) has garnered recent attention as a potentially powerful preclinical model and complement to other canonical mammalian models of human brain diseases (e.g., rodents and Old World non-human primates). With a granular frontal cortex and the advent of transgenic modifications, marmosets are well positioned to serve as neuropsychiatric models of prefrontal cortex dysfunction. A critical step in the development of marmosets for such models is to characterize functional network topologies of frontal cortex in healthy, normally functioning marmosets. Here, we s…

Secondary pneumatization of the maxillary sinus in callitrichid primates: insights from immunohistochemistry and bone cell distribution.

The paranasal sinuses remain elusive both in terms of function and in the proximate mechanism of their development. The present study sought to describe the maxillary sinuses (MSs) in three species of callitrichid primates at birth, a time when secondary pneumatization occurs rapidly in humans. The MSs were examined in serially sectioned and stained slides from the heads of two Callithrix jacchus, one Leontopithecus rosalia, and two Saguinus geoffroyi. Specimens were examined microscopically regarding the distribution of osteoclasts and osteoblasts along the osseous boundaries of the MS and ot…

Effects of prenatal dexamethasone treatment on physical growth, pituitary-adrenal hormones, and performance of motor, motivational, and cognitive tasks in juvenile and adolescent common marmoset monkeys.

Synthetic glucocorticoids such as dexamethasone (DEX) are commonly used to prevent respiratory distress syndrome in preterm infants, but there is emerging evidence of subsequent neurobehavioral abnormalities (e.g. problems with inattention/hyperactivity). In the present study, we exposed pregnant common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus, primates) to daily repeated DEX (5 mg/kg by mouth) during either early (d 42-48) or late (d 90-96) pregnancy (gestation period of 144 days). Relative to control, and with a longitudinal design, we investigated DEX effects in offspring in terms of physical growth, …
