The surgical approach in revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) must conform to the preoperative goals of revision surgery. Between November 1984 and December 1989, 318 non-cemented Porous Coated Anatomic (PCA; How-medica, Rutherford, New Jersey) total hip replacements were performed by the authors. This study evaluated the histopathologic reactions of rat connective tissue to two glass-ionomer cements (Fuji Cap II, Fuji Ionomer Type III) and two microfilled light-cured composite resins (Helio-molar Radiopaque and Helioprogress). Frontal sinus obliteration and reconstruction can be performed with autogenous grafts or synthetic implants, each of which has significant limitations. This study compared the pulpal responses to two innovative semihydrous glass ionomer luting cements (STA and ZIN) with those previously obtained for a conventional anhydrous glass ionomer luting cement, Aquacem. The reliability of cemental annulation counts in teeth was examined to determine its value as an age indicator for humans. One hundred extracted human teeth were embedded in polyester casting resin and sectioned using a diamond wafering saw. Thin sections were photomicrographed, projected, and counted in a double blind random method of presentation. Osteosynthesis for fractures of the metacarpals using a simplified system of Kirschner wires introduced percutaneously and maintained by an acrylic cement bridge has been performed in 40 patients. Consolidation was obtained consistently, within one month on average, with almost no morbidity and virtually without sequelae. This procedure is extremely simple and can be used for all extra-articular fractures of the metacarpals with displacement.

In a cohort study on 324 asbestos cement workers an increased risk of lung cancer was observed in comparison to cement workers (O/E = 1.7, p less than 0.05). 10 out of 17 deaths from lung cancer occurred after age 65, stressing the need for screening after retirement. Immunoregulatory disorders have been implicated in the pathogenesis of asbestosis. We therefore compared the immunologic status of a well-characterized group of 31 current and former asbestos-cement workers with that of a group of 52 healthy controls, after adjustments had been made for the possible confounding effects of age, race, and smoking. Serum specimens from 144 workers exposed to asbestos cement dust were examined for the presence of ANA, RF, immunoglobulins, and IC. These immunologic findings were compared with chest radiographic changes. A high percentage of workers had polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia, and there was a statistically significant association between elevated levels of IgG and IgM and radiographic classification.
