BACKGROUND: Most people understand spinal manipulation therapy to be a safe procedure, and in many cases treatment is provided without a diagnosis if there is musculoskeletal pain. Cervical epidural hematoma occurs in extremely rare cases after cervical manipulation therapy. This study reports a case of epidural hematoma that occurred in the anterior spinal cord after cervical massage.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 38-year-old male patient was admitted to the emergency department for sudden weakness in the lower extremity after receiving a cervical spine massage. No fracture was found using cervical ra

BACKGROUND The fifth and sixth cervical vertebrae (C5-C6) represent the high-risk segment requiring surgical correction in cervical spondylosis. Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) of C5-C6 includes an intervertebral fusion cage to maintain foraminal height and is combined with anterior plate fixation. The shape of the intervertebral cage can affect the postoperative outcome, including the rates of fusion, subsidence, and neck pain. This study aimed to use finite element (FE) parametric analysis to compare biomechanical properties of changes in intervertebral cage shape for C5-C6 ce…

A 66-year-old man presented with both small-cell lung cancer and prostate adenocarcinoma. Staging PET with 18 F-FDG PET/CT revealed increased uptake in the right pulmonary hilum, mediastinum, fifth cervical vertebra, and fifth lumbar vertebra. In contrast, subsequent 68 Ga-PSMA PET/CT revealed intense uptake only in the prostate and vertebrae, which demonstrated that the bone lesions had metastasized from prostate cancer.

The vertebral artery is usually described as the first branch of the subclavian artery, originating medial to the scalenus anterior muscle. During its cervical course, the vertebral artery presents a prevertebral segment and then enters the foramen transversarium of the sixth cervical vertebra. We describe a case of an unusual origin and course of the right vertebral artery in a cadaver specimen wherein the right vertebral artery originates from the right common carotid artery at the inferior border of the thyroid gland. In its cervical course the vertebral artery ascends outside and anteriorl

PURPOSE: Our study highlights the morphometry of the partial and complete atlas occipitalization (AOZ), its coexistence with fusions of the 2nd and 3rd cervical vertebrae and morphological and morphometric abnormalities of the posterior cranial fossa that are of paramount neurological importance.
METHODS: One hundred and eighty adult dry skulls, the atlas and axis vertebrae were examined.
RESULTS: Four skulls (2.2 %) showed AOZ. Two of them (1.1 %) presented a partial AOZ, one male skull (0.6 %) a complete AOZ and a female skull (0.6 %) had a fused left hemiatlas with the occipital bone and …

A healthy 19-year-old man presented with signs and symptoms of central cord syndrome after a moderate fall. He had congenital fusion of multiple cervical vertebrae consistent with Klippel-Feil syndrome. This disorder, although rare, is important for emergency medicine physicians to recognize as a risk factor for cervical cord syndromes.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation and measurement of the magnetic motor-evoked potentials (MMEPs) in the thoracic and pelvic limbs of four recumbent horses and one recumbent donkey were used to assess the integrity of the descending motor pathways, in order to confirm or exclude a descending motor tract lesion as the cause of the recumbency. In two of the animals abnormal MMEPs were recorded; in one of the horses a lesion along the cervical spinal cord due to a fracture of the fifth cervical vertebra was diagnosed and confirmed by radiography and postmortem examination; in another horse, damag

A four-year-old male affenpinscher was referred for evaluation of hindlimb weakness that had progressed to tetraparesis over a period of four weeks. Neurological examination was suggestive of a cervical spinal cord lesion. Radiographic examination revealed diffuse skeletal immaturity with open physes and epiphyseal dysplasia in long bones and vertebrae, consistent with a diagnosis of congenital hypothyroidism. Total and free serum T4 concentrations were very low, indicative of hypothyroidism. Survey radiographs of the cervical spine revealed a dorsally displaced Salter-Harris type I fracture o

INTRODUCTION: The growth and formation of facial skeleton is in interrelation with growth of cervical spine. Computer tomography plays an important role to examine and investigate the density of bony tissue resulting from total increase of osteopenic diseases and diseases of periodontal tissue. The aim of the paper is to compare indices of mineral density of bony tissue of the upper jaw and mineral density of the second cervical vertebra in patients with malocclusion.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 37 orthodontic patients were involved in the investigation. They were divided into three age groups dep

OBJECTIVE: To explore incidence and risk factors of postoperative adjacent segment degeneration (ASD) following anterior decompression and instrumented fusion for degenerative disorders of the cervical spine.
METHODS: Medical records from January 2005 to September 2011 of 283 patients were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were divided into 2 groups based on occurrence of ASD at follow-up: ASD group and no ASD group. To investigate risk for occurrence of ASD, 3 sets of factors were analyzed statistically: patient characteristics, surgical variables, and radiographic parameters.
RESULTS: Pos

BACKGROUND: Spinal deformities in Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS; type VI) are generally progressive and severe. Surgical treatment has been described for kyphoscoliosis in the thoracolumbar spine. However, there are few studies describing the consequences of an anterior approach in cervical kyphosis. An anterior approach may not be able to fully decompress the spinal canal and restore the normal curvature of the cervical spine. Therefore, the anterior approach for cervical kyphosis in young children is hard. We describe the first case in an EDS girl with cervical kyphosis who received satisfacto

There are several anatomical variants of the cervical vertebrae described in literature ranging from benign findings to those with varying clinical implications, including association with congenital diseases. We describe a case of an extremely rare anatomical variant of the cervical spine consisting of an accessory articulation of the cervical vertebrae C4 and C5 right transverse processes. The case is of a 35-year-old female who presented to primary care with 6-week history of intermittent, dull neck pain. An X-ray of the cervical spine was obtained which did not demonstrate radiological evi…

BACKGROUND: Klippel-Feil syndrome is defined as congenital fusion of two or more cervical vertebrae and is believed to result from faulty segmentation along the embryo's developing axis during weeks 3-8 of gestation. Persons with Klippel-Feil syndrome and cervical stenosis may be at increased risk for spinal cord injury after minor trauma as a result of hypermobility of the various cervical segments. Persons with Klippel-Feil Syndrome often have congenital anomalies of the urinary tract as well.

A double spinal cord trauma of an eight weeks old calf is reported, born on pasture from a heifer as a premature birth at the beginning of month 9. Observations made were rupture of intervertebral disk at the crossing of cervical to thoracic vertebrae followed by syndesmosis or synchondrosis resp., as well as a comminuted fracture of the 1st lumbar vertebra including both the adjoining vertebrae, with succeeding reactive callus formation. It is concluded that this traumatization has occurred during parturition. Motoric or sensory disturbances were observed neither.
