Epizootiology, pathology, and microbiology of an outbreak of urolithiasis in chickens.

An outbreak of urolithiasis that doubled the annual mortality rate of chickens in a large flock of table-egg-layers is described. Despite the presence of a large unilateral urolith and/or severe renal atrophy, the layers often maintained active egg production and apparent homeostasis until a small urolith blocked the ureteral flow from the contralateral kidney. This terminal episode appeared to produce acute obstructive renal failure, rapidly developing visceral gout (visceral urate deposition), uremia, and death. The atrophy observed appeared to be acquired and progressive. Histologic feature…

Somatostatin binding factor from chicken pancreas.

A soluble somatostatin binding factor was detected in cell-free extracts from chicken pancreas. For binding measurements Tyr1-somatostatin was radio-labeled with 125I by the lactoperoxidase technique. Specific radioactivity of about 18.5 MBq/nmol was achieved. Maximal total binding is approximately 0.17 (B/T) in the presence of 30 mg/l pancreatic protein. The specific binding is 0.10 and is suppressed by addition of 1 mg/l synthetic cold cyclic somatostatin. The dose-response curve of synthetic cyclic somatostatin is in the range of 0.6-600 nmol/l. Ca2+ and reduced thiol-reagents inhibit the s

Release of cyclic AMP from chicken erythrocytes.

Exposure of chicken erythrocytes to epinephrine results in the appearance of considerable amounts of the nucleotide in the incubation medium. The release of cAMP from the cells to the surrounding medium is dependent upon its overproduction by adenyl cyclase. However, the efflux of cAMP was found not to be directly related to the total intracellular level of the nucleotide. The rate of cAMP release also remains unchanged under conditions of inhibited intracellular degradation of the nucleotide. The data presented suggest that cAMP release is not likely to serve as a regulatory mechanism which p

Cardiopulmonary responses to inhaled sulfur dioxide in the chicken.

Selected cardiopulmonary variables were measured in anesthetized, male, White Leghorn type chickens before, during, and after 60 min exposure to various inhaled SO2 concentrations ranging from 0 to 5000 ppm. In one series of experiments, birds breathed through their nostrils and mouth; in a second series they breathed through a tracheal cannula. Exposure to 5000 ppm SO2 rapidly caused death in all birds with cannulated tracheae and in 4 of 5 birds with an intact respiratory system; one bird in each series of experiments died when exposed to 1000 ppm. Inhaling 100 ppm SO2 did not alter heart ra…

Infection of chicken erythrocytes with influenza and other viruses.

Chicken erythrocytes can be infected by the fowl plague (Rostock) strain (FP/R) of influenza type A, Newcastle disease virus (NDV), and Semliki Forest virus (SFV). Only NDV and SFV produced infectious progeny, albeit at low levels. Infection by FP/R was monitored by de novo synthesis of viral proteins, and the proteins synthesized could be identified by comparison with infected chicken fibroblast cells. FP/R synthesized far greater amounts of viral protein than did NDV or SFV.

Ultrastructure of the mucociliary interface in the nasal mucosa of the chicken.

The ultrastructure of the extracellular mucous blanket at the nasal cavities of the chicken was preserved by a method that stabilizes primarily carbohydrate moieties. The cilia were apparently fixed as if "frozen" in the act of beating. The blanket was markedly heterogeneous, with a basic fibrous structure, and it contained membrane remnants. The lumenal surface of the blanket was smooth, but the surface in contact with the cilia penetrated to varying depths between the ciliary shafts. The findings are discussed in terms of the assumptions made by others on the basis of indirect evidence.

[Ultrastructural study of the follicular cells of the adenohypophysis of the chicken].

As in other species, a network of follicular cells linked together by functional complexes can be observed by electron microscopy in the adenohypophysis of the chick. No secretory granules are seen in the follicular cells. They are connected with each other by thin and long processes inserted between the glandular cells and the perivascular spaces. They limit, by their follicular pole, submicroscopic cavities of irregular size and shape. They are empty or occupied by a material of variable density. These cells exist very precociously in the embryo but their characteristic organisation to form

Functional significance of thoracic vagal branches in the chicken.

One minute electrical stimulation was used to excite the right and left cervical vagi as well as specific points on, or branches of, the left thoracic vagus. Respiratory, heart rate and blood pressure responses were observed with the nerves intact and cut. Stimulation of either intact cervical vagus produced apnea, bradycardia and blood pressure depression. Stimulation of the cut ends after nerve section demonstrated that the heart rate and blood pressure effects were efferent and the respiratory change was afferent. No responses were observed due to stimulation of the vagus caudal to the lung

On the control of arginine metabolism in chicken kidney and liver.

Arginases have been found to be located on the external side of the inner mitochondrial membrane of chicken kidney and liver. Transamidinase has been detected within the liver mitochondrial matrix space. Arginases and transamidinase act upon two different intracellular arginine pools. Penetration of arginine into the matrix space occurs only in respring mitochondria and in the presence of anions such as acetate and phosphate; D-arginine, L-ornithine, D-'ornithine and L-lysine penetrate with the same modalities. L-Histidine penetrates only kidney mitochondria. Because of transamidinase compartm

Central β2-adrenergic receptors mediate insulin-induced anorexia in broiler chickens.

Insulin acts as a central anorexigenic signal in vertebrates, but its precise neuropharmacological mechanisms in avian species remain largely unelucidated. This study sought to delineate the involvement of specific central adrenergic receptor subtypes in the mechanism through which insulin suppresses feed intake in broiler chickens. To achieve this objective, six experiments were conducted using 264 neonatal broiler chicks receiving intracerebroventricular injections. The experimental design consisted of: 1) establishing a dose-response relationship for insulin (2.5, 5, and 10 ng), followed by…

Staphylococcus spp. Epidemiology, Virulence, Genomic Adaptability and Coinfection in Broiler Chickens.

Staphylococcus species are saprophytic, opportunistic, and nosocomial pathogens that frequently co-infect with other microorganisms, causing … ply this knowledge to develop innovative approaches to address staphylococcal infections in broiler chickens. Additionally, BCO is often attributed to coinfection with Staphylococcus species and other pathogens.

Molecular Characterization of H5N1 Clade 2.3.4.4b Virus in Vaccinated Layer Chickens.

The global emergence of the avian influenza virus (AIV) H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b since 2016 has caused substantial losses in wild bird and poultry populations, along with heightened risks of transmission to humans and other mammals. Vaccination of poultry has been a key strategy to curb the virus's spread and mitigate its socioeconomic impact. This report describes an outbreak of high pathogenicity avian influenza virus (HPAIV) H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b in a flock of 15,000 brown layer chickens (170 days old), all of which had received a four-dose vaccination regimen with H5N1/H5N8 commercial vaccines at…

Machine learning classification of dilated cardiomyopathy severity in commercial broiler chickens.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a significant cardiovascular disorder in commercial broiler chickens associated with congestive heart failure, ascites, and sudden death, leading to substantial economic losses in poultry production. Objective and accurate identification of DCM severity remains challenging due to reliance on subjective postmortem scoring systems. This study evaluated seven machine learning algorithms for classifying DCM severity into three ordinal categories (Score 1 = normal, Score 2 = moderate, Score 3 = severe) using 15 features comprising 6 cardiac morphometric measurements …
