Do adult mental health services identify child abuse and neglect? A systematic review.

Child abuse and neglect play a causal role in many mental health problems. Knowing whether users of mental health services were abused or neglected as children could be considered essential for developing comprehensive formulations and effective treatment plans. In the present study we report the findings of a systematic review, using independent searches of three databases designed to discover how often mental health staff find out whether their clients were abused or neglected as children. Twenty-one relevant studies were identified. Most people who use mental health services are never asked

Child Trauma Exposure and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: Identification in Community Mental Health Clinics.

We examined the identification of trauma exposure and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in help-seeking urban children (N=157) presenting for care in community mental health clinics. Children and their parents completed a standard intake assessment conducted by a community clinician followed by a structured trauma-focused assessment conducted by a study clinician. Clinicians provided ratings of child functional impairment, parents reported on internalizing/externalizing problems, and children provided self-reports of PTSD symptom severity. Although community clinicians were mandated by cli

Essential pre-pregnancy and pregnancy interventions for improved maternal, newborn and child health.

The statistics related to pregnancy and its outcomes are staggering: annually, an estimated 250000-280000 women die during childbirth. Unfortunately, a large number of women receive little or no care during or before pregnancy. At a period of critical vulnerability, interventions can be effectively delivered to improve the health of women and their newborns and also to make their pregnancy safe. This paper reviews the interventions that are most effective during preconception and pregnancy period and synergistically improve maternal and neonatal outcomes. Among pre-pregnancy interventions, fam

Parent health and functioning 13 months after infant or child NICU/PICU death.

BACKGROUND: After a child's death, parents may experience depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and increased risk for cancers, diabetes, psychiatric hospitalization, and suicide. Racial/ethnic differences are unknown. This longitudinal study investigated health and functioning of Hispanic, black, and white parents through 13 months after NICU/PICU death. METHODS: Parents (176 mothers, 73 fathers) of 188 deceased infants/children were recruited from 4 NICUs, 4 PICUs, and state death certificates 2 to 3 weeks after death. Deaths occurred after limiting treatment/withdrawing life su

Parenting, parental mental health, and child functioning in families residing in supportive housing.

Long-term homelessness is associated with other psychosocial risk factors (e.g., adult mental illness, substance abuse, and exposure to violence). All of these factors are associated with impairments in parenting effectiveness and child adjustment, but there are very limited data investigating parenting among families who are homeless and highly mobile. In particular, there is no literature examining the relationships among observed parenting, parental mental health, and child adjustment in a supportive housing sample. Data are reported from a multimethod study of 200 children in 127 families

"We built it grassroots… birth by birth": circumpolar maternal child health workshop proceedings.

Maternity care across the Circumpolar North continues to be shaped by colonial policies, centralized healthcare structures, and the ongoing evacuation of pregnant people from their communities for birth. While these challenges are well documented, less attention has been given to the strengths, innovations, and community-led approaches emerging across Arctic regions. Building on previous engagements of the Circumpolar Maternal and Child Health Working Group, a two-day workshop was convened in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada, in March 2026. The workshop brought together Elders, Indig…

Child Health Research Using linked Multi-domain Canadian Administrative Data: A Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: Linked administrative data integrating health and non-health information can support population-based research about biological and contextual environmental factors that influence child health. Database linkage studies leverage existing data to provide more comprehensive information than would be available from any single source. However, it is unknown the extent by which child health studies capitalise on linked multi-domain Canadian administrative data. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to describe Canadian population-based child health studies that used linked multi-domain …

Developmental Dysgraphia in Child and Adolescent Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing: An Integrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Developmental dysgraphia affects 5% to 20% of school-age children and reaches 59% among children with ADHD or autism. The condition produces task avoidance, eroded self-esteem, and behavioral presentations that frequently result in psychiatric referral for anxiety, depression, school refusal, and behavioral disturbance. More than 37% of children with learning disabilities reach clinical thresholds for affective and ADHD problems. Despite this clinical footprint, dysgraphia remains nosologically contested and rarely identified within psychiatric evaluation. OBJECTIVES: This integra

Poor child oral health and school absences: a population-wide data linkage study.

BACKGROUND: Child dental caries is highly prevalent worldwide, with significant treatment costs, but its broader societal impact remains underexplored. This cross-sectional study examined associations between child oral health and school absences in Scotland. METHODS: Four population-wide data sets were linked at the individual level, where the outcome was part-day school absence during first primary school year across six academic years (2008/2009-2010/2011, 2012/2013, 2014/2015 and 2016/2017). Oral health was assessed using three metrics: caries experience, urgent need of dental treatment (

Silver Splits and Parent-Child Disconnectedness: Mental Health Consequences for European Older Adults.

Rising rates of "silver splits" in Europe resemble increases in gray divorce in the U.S. Partnership dissolutions may harm older adults' mental health, especially for 'disconnected' parents who do not receive support from their children. However, researchers have relied primarily on multilevel modeling, neglecting unobserved characteristics that may select an individual into both divorce and parent-child disconnectedness. This brief report addresses this research gap by estimating fixed-effects linear regression models that control for time-invariant confounders. We used data from the Survey o

Mapping Stakeholders in Mexico's Maternal and Child Health Network: A Net-Map Approach.

Maternal and child health care consists of providing quality care for the dyad mother-child, starting with prenatal care, early postpartum, and monitoring the growth and development of children during their first 1000 days of life. Maternal and child malnutrition remains a critical public health concern in Mexico, and it is still far from reaching the Global Nutrition Targets, particularly those corresponding to stunting, low birth weight, anemia, and exclusive breastfeeding by 2030. The objectives of this study were to: (1) identify the actors involved in decision-making regarding programs or…

UK aid cuts threaten global child health: a call to rethink international assistance.

Recent reductions in UK aid have demonstrably harmed child health in low-income and middle-income countries. Increased child morbidity and mortality are directly linked to funding cuts impacting vaccination programmes, maternal and child health services and nutritional interventions, exacerbating the health crisis. This article analyses these impacts, criticises systemic flaws in the aid architecture, particularly the impact of the abolition of Department for International Development and advocates for a decolonised, localised and accountable aid system prioritising child health.
