Indirect flight of an African bat to Israel: an example of the potential for zoonotic pathogens to move between continents.

The transmission of harmful pathogens during commercial air flights is an increasing health concern. A potential, yet relatively overlooked source of zoonotic infectious diseases involves collisions of birds and bats with aircraft and long distance transport of their carcasses. We report a case of aerial transportation of the remains of an African fruit bat over three continents, following a collision with an aircraft, and demonstrate the relative ease with which zoonotic pathogens, such as rabies virus or other viruses associated with bats, may cross national boundaries and continents even. I

Histoplasmosis in Africa: a review.

Classical histoplasmosis caused by Histoplasma capsulatum var. capsulatum, and African histoplasmosis caused by H. capsulatum var. duboisii are both endemic in Africa. In South Africa, only classical histoplasmosis caused by Histoplasma capsulatum var. capsulatum is known to occur and cases are seen frequently. It occurs sporadically in several other African countries. Histoplasma capsulatum var. capsulatum is known to occur naturally in caves inhabited by bats in some parts of South Africa, namely, Transvaal and Cape province, Zimbabwe and Tanzania. Outbreaks of histoplasmosis have been repor

Arrhythmic breathing in torpid pipistrelle bats, Pipistrellus pipistrellus.

The arrhythmic breathing pattern of torpid female pipistrelle bats (Pipistrellus pipistrellus) was monitored using Doppler radar. A total of 98 h of radar measurements were made on 11 individuals over 17 experiments, during which time 974 apneic intervals were monitored, over ambient temperatures (Ta, degrees C) ranging from -1 to 14 degrees C, and body masses ranging from 4.6 to 7.4 g. As Ta declined, a greater proportion of all breaths occurred in discrete breathing bouts. Apneic intervals lengthened at lower Ta, but were not related to body mass. Mean apneic length, averaged over 1 degree C

Survival of Blastomyces dermatitidis in the gastrointestinal tract of an orally infected insectivorous bat, Rhinopoma hardwickei hardwickei Gray.

The survival of Blastomyces dermatitidis with markedly reduced population, in the gastrointestinal tract and faeces of Rhinopoma hardwickei orally infected with 2.5 X 10(5) colony forming units of the fungus, is reported. B. dermatitidis was cultured from the stomach, intestine and faeces up to 16-24 h and from rectum up to 48 h post infection. The results demonstrate that orally infected R. hardwickei hardwickei bats transiently shed B. dermatitidis through their faeces but the significance of this route of environmental dissemination requires further evaluation.

Visual accommodation in the flying fox (Pteropus giganteus).

The flying fox, Pteropus giganteus, possesses a papillated retina and was previously thought to lack a mechanism for active accommodation. An investigation of the anatomy and physiology of accommodation in this megachiropteran bat revealed that it has a well developed ciliary muscle and that it can actively accommodate through a range of at least 3.12 D. In addition, it was found that the origin of the retinoscopic reflex does not reside in the receptor layer of the retina, because the focus of the eye is invariant for small changes of angle of refraction.

Occurrence of Histoplasma capsulatum Darling, 1906 in Israel, with a review of the current status of histoplasmosis in the Middle East.

The isolation of Histoplasma capsulatum from a bat cave in the Galilee region of Israel is reported along with the discovery of a bat (Myotis myotis) infected by H. capsulatum. Soils collected in avian and chiropteran habitats throughout Israel also yielded the following fungi of medical interest: Arthroderma quadrifidum, A. tuberculatum, Candida parapsilosis, Chrysosporium indicum, C. keratinophilum, C. tropicum, Cryptococcus neoformans, Ctenomyces serratus, Microsporum gypseum, and Petriellidium boydii. All available reports concerning the occurrence of H. capsulatum and histoplasmosis in th…

Detection of Bartonella tamiae, Coxiella burnetii and rickettsiae in arthropods and tissues from wild and domestic animals in northeastern Algeria.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the scope and importance of emergent vector-borne diseases has increased dramatically. In Algeria, only limited … ) Ixodes vespertilionis ticks, 8/11 (72.7%) Nycteribiidae spp. flies and in 6/10 (60%) bat spleens (Chiroptera spp.). DNA from Coxiella burnetii, the agent of Q fever, was also identified in 3/19 (15.8%) I. vespertilionis from bats. Rickettsia slovaca, the agent of tick-borne lymphadenopathy, was detected in 1/1 (100%) Haemaphysalis punctata and 2/3 (66.7%) …

Increased detection of rabies virus in bats in Ceará State (Northeast Brazil) after implementation of a passive surveillance programme.

The intensification of dog, cat and livestock vaccination campaigns significantly reduced rabies cases in humans and domestic animals in Ceará State, Brazil. However, sylvatic animals-bats (order Chiroptera), wild canids, raccoons and non-human primates- remain as reservoirs for the virus. Our hypothesis is that surveillance and monitoring of rabies virus in bats, especially passive surveillance, is of fundamental importance, besides the implementation of health education and strengthening of surveillance actions in humans exposed to aggressions. Thus, we assessed the occurrence of rabies viru…

Spatial variation of mercury bioaccumulation in bats of Canada linked to atmospheric mercury deposition.

Wildlife are exposed to neurotoxic mercury at locations distant from anthropogenic emission sources because of long-range atmospheric transport of this metal. In this study, mercury bioaccumulation in insectivorous bat species (Mammalia: Chiroptera) was investigated on a broad geographic scale in Canada. Fur was analyzed (n=1178) for total mercury from 43 locations spanning 20° latitude and 77° longitude. Total mercury and methylmercury concentrations in fur were positively correlated with concentrations in internal tissues (brain, liver, kidney) for a small subset (n=21) of little brown bats …

Infectivity of attenuated poxvirus vaccine vectors and immunogenicity of a raccoonpox vectored rabies vaccine in the Brazilian Free-tailed bat (Tadarida brasiliensis).

Bats (Order Chiroptera) are an abundant group of mammals with tremendous ecological value as insectivores and plant dispersers, but their role as reservoirs of zoonotic diseases has received more attention in the last decade. With the goal of managing disease in free-ranging bats, we tested modified vaccinia Ankara (MVA) and raccoon poxvirus (RCN) as potential vaccine vectors in the Brazilian Free-tailed bat (Tadarida brasiliensis), using biophotonic in vivo imaging and immunogenicity studies. Animals were administered recombinant poxviral vectors expressing the luciferase gene (MVA-luc, RCN-l…
