Comparison of the Clearview Chlamydia test, Chlamydiazyme, and cell culture for detection of Chlamydia trachomatis in women with a low prevalence of infection.

Two antigen detection systems, Clearview Chlamydia (Unipath Ltd., Bedford, United Kingdom) and Chlamydiazyme (Abbott Laboratories, North Chicago, Ill.), were compared with culture for the diagnosis of chlamydia infection in women attending gynecological clinics. Chlamydia trachomatis was isolated from 43 (4.5%) of the 965 women tested. In comparison with tissue culture, the Clearview Chlamydia and Chlamydiazyme tests had sensitivities of 79.0 and 74.4%, respectively, and both had a specificity of 99.6%. The results show that the Clearview Chlamydia test is comparable to Chlamydiazyme for the d

Host-pathogen interactions in specific pathogen-free chickens following aerogenous infection with Chlamydia psittaci and Chlamydia abortus.

Although Chlamydia (C.) psittaci infections are recognized as an important factor causing economic losses and impairing animal welfare in poultry production, the specific mechanisms leading to severe clinical outcomes are poorly understood. In the present study, we comparatively investigated pathology and host immune response, as well as systemic dissemination and expression of essential chlamydial genes in the course of experimental aerogeneous infection with C. psittaci and the closely related C. abortus, respectively, in specific pathogen-free chicks. Clinical signs appeared sooner and were

Improving the molecular diagnosis of Chlamydia psittaci and Chlamydia abortus infection with a species-specific duplex real-time PCR.

Chlamydia psittaci and Chlamydia abortus are closely related intracellular bacteria exhibiting different tissue tropism that may cause severe but distinct infection in humans. C. psittaci causes psittacosis, a respiratory zoonotic infection transmitted by birds. C. abortus is an abortigenic agent in small ruminants, which can also colonize the human placenta and lead to foetal death and miscarriage. Infections caused by C. psittaci and C. abortus are underestimated mainly due to diagnosis difficulties resulting from their strict intracellular growth. We developed a duplex real-time PCR to dete

Chronic infection with Chlamydia pneumoniae in asthma: a type-2 low infection related phenotype.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia pneumoniae and Mycoplasma pneumoniae have been implicated in the pathogenesis of asthma and are responsible for chronic inflammation when host immune system fails to eradicate the bacteria. METHOD: We performed a prospective study on 410 patients who underwent a visit at the asthma clinic of CHU of Liege between June 2016 and June 2018 with serology testing for C. pneumoniae and M. pneumoniae. RESULTS: 65% of our asthmatic population had serum IgA and/or IgG towards C. pneumoniae, while only 12.6% had IgM and/or IgG against M. pneumoniae. Compared to seronegative asthma

Plasmid CDS5 influences infectivity and virulence in a mouse model of Chlamydia trachomatis urogenital infection.

The native plasmid of both Chlamydia muridarum and Chlamydia trachomatis has been shown to control virulence and infectivity in mice and in lower primates. We recently described the development of a plasmid-based genetic transformation protocol for Chlamydia trachomatis that for the first time provides a platform for the molecular dissection of the function of the chlamydial plasmid and its individual genes or coding sequences (CDS). In the present study, we transformed a plasmid-free lymphogranuloma venereum isolate of C. trachomatis, serovar L2, with either the original shuttle vector (pGFP:

Chlamydia trachomatis infection in HIV-infected women: need for screening by a sensitive and specific test.

Reproductive tract infection (RTIs)/sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are recognized as a major public health problem, particularly due to their relationship with HIV infection. Early detection and treatment of Chlamydia trachomatis infection (CTI) among HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected women may impact heterosexual HIV transmission. A total of 120 participants were enrolled: 30 HIV seropositive women with symptoms of RTIs, 30 HIV seropositive women without symptoms of RTIs, 30 HIV seronegative women with symptoms of RTIs, and 30 HIV seronegative women without symptoms of RTIs. One endocer

A case report of spherical pneumonia caused by Chlamydia psittaci infection.

Psittacosis is a zoonotic infectious disease caused by Chlamydia psittaci, typically transmitted from birds to humans. Its clinical manifestations are often subtle and non-specific, making it prone to being misdiagnosed as common community-acquired pneumonia. Round pneumonia (or spherical pneumonia) refers to a lung infection that appears as a round or oval density on computed tomography (CT). It is uncommon in adults. Spherical pneumonia specifically caused by Chlamydia psittaci infection is particularly uncommon. Here we report a case of a 43-year-old male who was admitted due to a 4-day his

Significant rise of Chlamydia pneumoniae infection in 2024 in Marseille, France.

OBJECTIVES: We detected in October 2024 an abnormally high number of Chlamydia pneumoniae diagnoses through real-time surveillance of infections in Southeastern France, which followed significant increases in Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Bordetella pertussis diagnoses. Therefore, we retrospectively analyzed C. pneumoniae quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) results performed on respiratory samples collected between 2018 and 2024 in our center and described features of these infections. METHODS: C. pneumoniae qPCR was part from a multiplex syndromic panel or an in-house simplex qPCR assa

Chlamydia Trachomatis infection in infertile men from Cotonou, Benin.

Male infertility accounts for 20-30% cases of infertility, and may be due to hormonal, genetic, toxic or infectious factors. Male urogenital infections caused by Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) are potential causes of male infertility. This study determined the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis infection among infertile men in Cotonou. The descriptive cross-sectional study used Real time PCR (RT PCR) to detect Chlamydia trachomatis infection on the first urine stream from 90 participants who did sperm analysis for infertility problems between March 2023 and December 2023. The mean age of the pati

Laboratory detection methods for Chlamydia trachomatis infection in children: a review.

Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) infections in children present distinct diagnostic challenges, ranging from perinatal conjunctivitis and pneumonia to trachoma and, in older children, sexually transmitted infections. This review systematically evaluates contemporary laboratory methods for detecting CT in children. The methods are categorized by their distinct targets, beginning with morphological identification via stains (e.g., Giemsa, immunofluorescence) with or without culture; followed by immunological detection of antigens or antibodies (e.g., ELISA); and finally, molecular analysis using NAATs

Identification and comparison of Chlamydia psittaci, Legionella and Mycoplasma pneumonia infection.

INTRODUCTION: Conventional etiological detection and pathogenic antibody methods make it challenging to identify the atypical pathogens among the community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) could rapidly detect all potentially infectious diseases and identifies novel or potential pathogens. METHODS: Eighteen patients diagnosed with atypical CAP were enrolled in this retrospective study, including nine Chlamydia psittaci pneumonia (C. p), four Legionella pneumonia (L. p) and five Mycoplasma pneumonia (M. p). We simultaneously tested bronchoalveolar lavage

Chlamydia pneumonia infection and risk of multiple sclerosis: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The role of infectious agents, including Chlamydia pneumoniae (Cpn), in the development of multiple sclerosis (MS), is still a matter of major contention. OBJECTIVE: This meta-analysis study aimed to assess the actual involvement of Cpn in MS development. METHODS: We undertook a search of international scientific databases to identify eligible studies. We used a random-effects meta-analysis model (REM) to generate the pooled odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Heterogeneity was calculated using the I2 statistic. Sensitivity and subgroup analyses were applied to as

Co-infection of Chlamydia psittaci and Tropheryma whipplei: A case report.

BACKGROUND: The co-infection of Chlamydia psittaci (C. psittaci) and Tropheryma whipplei (T. whipplei) is unusual, and the detection of pathogenic microorganisms is particularly important for patients with severe diseases or poor experience in treatment. Early identification of pathogens can significantly improve the prognosis of the patients. Targeted next-generation sequencing (tNGS) is currently widely used in clinical practice for various infectious diseases, including respiratory infections, to achieve early, accurate, and rapid microbial diagnosis. CASE SUMMARY: We report a case of a 40
