Insulin-mediated ciliary remodeling in the choroid plexus epithelium.

The choroid plexus (ChP) epithelium plays a crucial role in cerebrospinal fluid production and brain homeostasis. ChP is mainly composed of multiciliated epithelial cells that exhibit a noncanonical ciliary organization whose function is still debated. Insulin signaling is known to be important for central nervous system function, but its role in ChP function and ciliary organization has not been elucidated yet. To investigate how prolonged insulin exposure modulates ChP cells, we treated primary murine choroid plexus epithelial cells (pCPECs) with insulin for up to six days and used a combina…

Venous origins of choroid plexus vasculature: insights from zebrafish.

The choroid plexus vasculature plays a critical role in maintaining cerebrospinal fluid homeostasis. In a recent study, Lee et al. identified two venous sources that give rise to the hindbrain myelencephalic choroid plexus vasculature in zebrafish and demonstrated that Vegf receptor pathways are required for choroid plexus vascularization.

Purely neuroendoscopic management of choroid plexus tumors in children.

OBJECTIVE: The goal in this study was to retrospectively evaluate the safety and feasibility of purely neuroendoscopic removal of choroid plexus tumors (CPTs) in children using a monoportal or biportal technique. METHODS: The clinical, radiological, and surgical data of all children with CPTs removed via purely endoscopic or microsurgical approaches in the last 12 years at two centers were retrospectively reviewed. Both centers were fully equipped with advanced neuroendoscopic technology, and surgical teams were fully trained in complex neuroendoscopic intraventricular surgical procedures. R…

BACKGROUND: The choroid plexus (CP) is increasingly recognised as a contributor to chronic inflammation in multiple sclerosis (MS). While CP enlargement is reported in early MS, its role in secondary progressive MS (SPMS) is poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to quantify CP volume in SPMS and compare it to relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) and clinically is…

Choroid plexus enlargement in patients with obstructive sleep apnea.

OBJECTIVES: The function of choroid plexus is to produce cerebrospinal fluid, which is critical for the glymphatic system function. In this study, we aimed to analyze the differences in choroid plexus volume between patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and healthy controls, with the goal of discovering the glymphatic system dysfunction in patients with OSA. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 40 patients with OSA confirmed by polysomnography and 38 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. All participants underwent three-dimensional T1-weighted brain imaging, which was suitable for volume…

Choroid and Retinal Effects of Epilepsy and Epilepsy Subgroups.

OBJECTIVES: The objective were to evaluate structural alterations in the retina and choroid tissue of epilepsy patients and subtypes using enhanced depth imaging optic coherence tomography (EDI-OCT). METHODS: 46 epilepsy patients and 50 sex- and age-matched control patients were analyzed in the study. Patients' epilepsy types were recorded. The central macular thickness (CMT), retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), ganglion cell layer (GCL), and choroidal thickness (CT) were investigated through the Spectralis-OCT device (SD-OCT). Image-J program was used to calculate the total choroidal area (TCA…

Histological examination of choroid plexus epithelia changes in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: The choroid plexus (CP) produces and secretes most of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of the central nervous system. The CP is suggested to be regulated by descending neurons and by circulating factors and is involved in the interaction between central and peripheral inflammation. Quantitative imaging has demonstrated volumetric CP changes in psychosis, schizophrenia and depression. This study histologically examines CP epithelial cell morphology in these illnesses to identify the biological source of such volumetric changes. METHODS: Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) blocks w…

Isolated Lumbar Atypical Choroid Plexus Papilloma: A Case Report.

AIM: To report the first case of an isolated lumbar grade II atypical choroid plexus papilloma (CPP). CASE REPORT: A 42-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of back and leg pain. No urinary or rectal dysfunction was detected. Lumbar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a well-circumscribed, contrast-enhancing, intradural extramedullary mass at L2-3. He underwent L2 and L3 partial laminectomies for tumor resection and complete resection was achieved without causing neurological deficit. Histopathologic examination of the tumor resulted in a diagnosis of grade II atypical CPP. T…

Choroid plexus-derived extracellular vesicles exhibit brain targeting characteristics.

The brain is protected against invading organisms and other unwanted substances by tightly regulated barriers. However, these central nervou … rms that are able to cross the blood-cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) barrier, formed by a single layer of choroid plexus epithelial cells, remains a largely unexplored domain. The discovery that extracellular vesicles (EVs) make up a natural mechanism for information transfer between cells and across cell layers, has stimulated interest in their potential use a …

Cholesterol granuloma in the choroid plexus of a cat.

BACKGROUND: This case report describes the clinical presentation, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as well as the histopathological findings … uthanized. Histological examination identified the mass as a bilateral cholesterol granuloma in the choroid plexus of the lateral ventricles. CONCLUSIONS: Although plexus cholesterol granulomas are rarely seen in cats, they should be considered as a differential diagnosis in elderly patients with neurological signs such as behavioral changes.

Choroid plexus epithelium and its role in neurological diseases.

Choroid plexus epithelial cells can secrete cerebrospinal fluid into the ventricles, serving as the major structural basis of the selective barrier between the neurological system and blood in the brain. In fact, choroid plexus epithelial cells release the majority of cerebrospinal fluid, which is connected with particular ion channels in choroid plexus epithelial cells. Choroid plexus epithelial cells also produce and secrete a number of essential growth factors and peptides that help the injured cerebrovascular system heal. The pathophysiology of major neurodegenerative disorders like Alzhei…

3D Reconstruction of the Clarified Rat Hindbrain Choroid Plexus.

The choroid plexus (CP) acts as a regulated gate between blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Despite its simple histology (a monostratified cuboidal epithelium overlying a vascularized stroma), this organ has remarkably complex functions several of which involve local interaction with cells located around ventricle walls. Our knowledge of CP structural organization is mainly derived from resin casts, which capture the overall features but only allow reconstruction of the vascular pattern surface, unrelated to the overlying epithelium and only loosely related to ventricular location. Recently,…
