Suitable ecological niches of invasive malaria vector under present and projected climatic conditions in South of Iran.

BACKGROUND: The invasive mosquito species Anopheles stephensi plays a critical role in malaria transmission, particularly in urban environments. Its ability to thrive in such settings has raised public health concerns, especially as it expands its geographical range. The resurgence of malaria in Iran underscores the challenges posed by this vector, which is further complicated by factors such as climate change and the movement of populations. Understanding the ecological niches of An. stephensi is essential for developing targeted malaria control strategies. This study aims to assess the curre

Climate change impacts on oyster aquaculture - Part II: Impact assessment and adaptation measures.

The oyster aquaculture sector plays a major role in food security, providing a sustainable way to obtain food and livelihood for coastal and Island nations. Oysters are one of the preferred choices by aquaculturists because of their resilience to harsh climatic conditions. Nonetheless, climate change will continue to pose threats to its culture. Climate-induced hazards such as floods, storms, disease, and invasive species are some of the key factors limiting oyster production globally. A thriving aquaculture industry needs optimal conditions to maximize exploitation. Here, we continue with the

Healthcare resilience in the climate crisis: Do we have any?

The UK is increasingly being affected by unpredictable weather events with flooding, heatwaves and storms impacting on physical and mental health and livelihoods. All of these will become increasingly common as the climate crisis accelerates. Efforts made to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are slow. Healthcare systems must meet the growing demands of a multi-morbid and ageing population, while simultaneously reducing their environmental impact. The NHS is already under significant pressures and currently is ill-prepared to deal with these changes unless adaptive and resilient measures ar

Seasonality of agricultural exposure as an important predictor of seasonal yellow fever spillover in Brazil.

Yellow fever virus (YFV) is a zoonotic arbovirus affecting both humans and non-human primates (NHP's) in Africa and South America. Previous descriptions of YF's seasonality have relied purely on climatic explanations, despite the high proportion of cases occurring in people involved in agriculture. We use a series of random forest classification models to predict the monthly occurrence of YF in humans and NHP's across Brazil, by fitting four classes of covariates related to the seasonality of climate and agriculture (planting and harvesting), crop output and host demography. We find that model

Clinical outcomes of temperature related injuries treated in the hospital setting, 2011-2018.

BACKGROUND: Concerns over climate change have prompted substantial interest in temperature related injuries resulting from extreme weather conditions. Climate models predict that as global temperatures increase, the frequency and severity of extreme heat and cold weather events will grow which will likely increase the incidence of temperature related injury. The aim of this study was to analyze the healthcare impacts of temperature related injuries in the state of Illinois in order to serve as a model to guide future public health policy. METHODS: Outpatient and inpatient heat and cold relate…

The cumulative effect of positive school climate on the association with suicidal ideation among adolescents: A two-wave longitudinal study.

The relationship between a positive school climate and adolescent suicidal ideation has been well established. However, there is limited research focusing on the distinct dimensions of a positive school climate and their cumulative protective impact on suicidal ideation. This study aimed to investigate the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between a positive school climate and adolescents' suicidal ideation using the cumulative protection model and to examine the potential moderation role of sex. A total of 11,960 junior school students engaged in two surveys conducted 6 months apa

Regional dynamics drive differences in future heat stress and reveal where Hawaiian corals are most likely to persist.

The Hawaiian Islands cause significant disruption to North Pacific oceanic and atmospheric flows creating highly localized spatial variability of ocean conditions on coral reefs. This variability affects climate impacts on these corals but is unresolved in global climate models. Using a dynamically downscaled model to resolve future conditions at high temporal (daily) and spatial (4 km) resolution for the Hawaiian Islands, we investigate projected heat stress and the adaptation rate required for corals to withstand projected end of century warming for three different emission scenarios. In the…

Precipitation variability, fertility, and metabolic stress over 5 millennia in the ancient Andes: A bioarchaeological path analysis.

Climate change is a pressing global issue. Research on living populations fails to capture the full range of possible responses. Archaeological and bioarchaeological research offers a window into how people adapted to past climatic changes. We investigate the relationship between human health and precipitation among archaeological populations in the Andes region of South America. We conduct a path analysis of precipitation, cribra orbitalia, and age-at-death to assess the evidence for metabolic responses to climate change. Our models suggest that cribra orbitalia was less common, and that fert

The Impact of Climatic Factors on Temporal Mosquito Distribution and Population Dynamics in an Area Targeted for Sterile Insect Technique Pilot Trials.

It is widely accepted that climate affects the mosquito life history traits; however, its precise role in determining mosquito distribution and population dynamics is not fully understood. This study aimed to investigate the influence of various climatic factors on the temporal distribution of Anopheles arabiensis populations in Mamfene, South Africa between 2014 and 2019. Time series analysis, wavelet analysis, cross-correlation analysis, and regression model combined with the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model were utilized to assess the relationship between climatic fact

Leaf Size in Conifers: Global Associations With Climate and Evolutionary History.

Global analyses of leaf size suggest that large leaves predominate in favourably warm and wet climates, and small leaves occur at climatic extremes. However, these patterns are dominated by data from angiosperms and may obscure drivers of leaf size variation in older, less speciose groups, such as conifers. Here we employ a novel modelling framework, multi-response phylogenetic mixed models (MRPMM), that identifies trait correlations at both phylogenetic and phylogenetically independent levels to investigate how climate influences leaf size evolution across conifers. We show overall patterns f

Multiyear tropical warm pool warming drives slowdown in Antarctic mass loss.

Antarctic mass loss has been a major contributor to global sea-level rise for most of the last few decades, mainly driven by West Antarctica1. During 2021-2023, however, a sharp increase in surface mass balance over Queen Mary Land and Wilkes Land in East Antarctica offset West Antarctic loss and slowed the rate of total ice mass loss2,3. Although this slowdown is consistent with the expected long-term precipitation response to global warming through poleward-shifted storm tracks and Antarctic moistening4, our results point to a different mechanism. Here we show that the recent ice mass gain w

Climatic determinants of rheumatic and autoimmune musculoskeletal pain: a fourteen-year primary care time-series study.

Climatic variability has been proposed as a modulator of musculoskeletal and rheumatic pain; however, long-term population-based evidence examining healthcare utilization remains limited. To evaluate the association between climatic variables and primary care consultations for autoimmune and immune-mediated musculoskeletal pain over a fourteen-year period, and to explore potential modification by sex and diagnostic category. A retrospective ecological time-series study was conducted using electronic health records from three primary care centers in the Community of Madrid (Spain) between Janua

Perspectives: Educating Transfusion Medicine Professionals in Planetary Health and Infectious Diseases: Should Blood Banks Have Dedicated Infectious Diseases Consultation Services?

Transfusion medicine and blood banking educators across the world have identified a need to incorporate more education in planetary health and infectious diseases into clinical training. The urgency of these calls has increased as climate change has accelerated and deleterious health effects attributable to climate change have become more prevalent. Today, few academic hospital centers have dedicated infectious diseases consultation services within departments or divisions of transfusion medicine, but the presence of a dedicated team focusing on transfusion-transmitted infections can impact cl

Climate change impacts on tropical cyclone-induced power outage risk: Sociodemographic differences in outage burdens.

This research investigates the projected risks of future climate trends on tropical cyclone-induced power outages in the Gulf and Atlantic coast of the United States, focusing on the disproportionate impacts on vulnerable populations and the economic burdens associated with such events. Our methodology integrates four well-documented models to estimate changes in power outage rates, sociodemographic inequities, and economic costs due to tropical cyclone projections. Synthetic tropical cyclones were generated using data from seven global climate models (GCMs), used to compare power outage risks…

Projected climate change effects on suitable habitat for Pseudosuccinea columella and Radix natalensis in uMgungundlovu, South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: Climate change impacts oceanic and atmospheric circulation patterns, precipitation, air and sea surface temperatures leading to altered intermediate host vector distribution, reproduction, and maturation. With temperatures predicted to rise by 1.5°C or more, understanding the influence of environmental characteristics and climatic conditions on distribution of intermediate host vectors, occurrence and habitat suitability is vital in vector borne diseases and their control policies. Hence, the study focused on the predicted changes in habitat suitability of Pseudosuccinea columell
