The anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) process has revolutionized nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment with its exceptional cost-effectiveness and carbon-neutral characteristics. Nevertheless, the intrinsic psychrophilic sensitivity of anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AnAOB), particularly their rapid metabolic suppression below 15 °C, poses a critical bottleneck for sustainable implementation in cold-climate regions. Recent advancements in exogenous stimulation strategies offer promising solutions to this challenge, with particular emphasis on iron supplementation and cryogenic a

A great challenge for haze pollution mitigation with the existing emission control measures in China is ozone (O3) increase. The chemical processes leading to weakened haze mitigation are still poorly understood. Our work identifies the enhanced aging chemistries of black carbon (BC) with increasing O3 as an essential driver to weaken haze mitigation based on field observations during autumn/winter haze periods in 2014 and 2018 in North China Plain. The enhanced atmospheric oxidation capacity induced by increasing O3 promotes the initial aging of accumulated fresh BC from continuous emission u

Coastal wetlands are unique ecosystems formed by the interaction between land and sea, serving as important ecological barriers supporting sustainable development. They possess high biological productivity, strong ecological resilience, and significant carbon sink functions, but are currently under dual pressures from intense human activities and global climate change. Here, I systematically sorted out the development context and trends of research on coastal wetlands' response to global change. The global research on coastal wetlands has achieved multiple key transformations. At the cognitive

Cyanobacterial blooms present substantial challenges to managers and threaten ecological and public health. Although the majority of cyanobacterial bloom research and management focuses on factors that control bloom initiation, duration, toxicity, and geographical extent, relatively little research focuses on the role of loss processes in blooms and how these processes are regulated. Here, we define a loss process in terms of population dynamics as any process that removes cells from a population, thereby decelerating or reducing the development and extent of blooms. We review abiotic (e.g., h

The Montreal Protocol is working, but it will take several decades for ozone to return to 1980 levels. The atmospheric concentrations of ozone depleting substances are decreasing, and ozone column amounts are no longer decreasing. Mid-latitude ozone is expected to return to 1980 levels before mid-century, slightly earlier than predicted previously. However, the recovery rate will be slower at high latitudes. Springtime ozone depletion is expected to continue to occur at polar latitudes, especially in Antarctica, in the next few decades. Because of the success of the Protocol, increases in UV-B

Sexual minority people report substance use at higher rates than their heterosexual peers. Workplace sexual identity management, defined as the process by which sexual minority persons disclose or conceal their identities at work, may exacerbate substance use under stressful conditions, such as when faced with incivility. However, there is a paucity of research on the relation of the work environment to sexual minority workers' substance use. The present study used the social cognitive career self-management model as a conceptual framework to examine two aspects of the work environment (positi

The relationship between malnutrition and climate change is still poorly understood but a comprehensive knowledge of their interactions is needed to address the global public health agenda. Limited studies have been conducted to propose robust and economic-friendly strategies to augment the food basket with underutilized species and biofortify the staples for nutritional security. Sea-buckthorn is a known "superfood" rich in vitamin C and iron content. It is found naturally in northern hemispherical temperate Eurasia and can be utilized as a model species for genetic biofortification in cash c

Elevated CO2 (eCO2), a major driver of climate change, is altering aquatic environments. Meanwhile, galaxolide (HHCB) accumulates in water bodies, threatening aquatic plants. Foliar 28-homobrassinolide (HBL) can enhance plant stress resistance. However, how eCO2 and HBL interact to regulate photosynthesis, carbon allocation, and rhizosphere processes under HHCB stress remains unclear. This study therefore investigated how eCO₂ alone alleviates HHCB stress in Eichhornia crassipes and how the combination of eCO₂ and HBL shifts the plant's defense strategy towards the rhizosphere. Results showed

Coarse aerosol particles containing chloride in tropical forests are significant for understanding biogeochemical cycles and atmospheric processes, with implications for environmental health and climate change mitigation. This study explored the sources of super-coarse carbonaceous aerosol particles containing chloride in a tropical savanna climate. Aerosol samples were collected from an agro-forest site in Thailand during the dry season and analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations are impacting the global climate, resulting in significant interest in soil carbon sequestration as a mitigation strategy. While recognized that mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) in soils is mainly formed through microbial activity, our understanding of microbial-derived MAOM formation processes remains limited due to the complexity of the soil environment. To gain insights into this issue, we incubated fresh soil samples for 45 days with one of three mineral additions: Sand, Kaolinite+Sand, or Illite+Sand. 16S rRNA V3/V4 gene a

Atmospheric acidity is increasingly determined by carbon dioxide and organic acids1-3. Among the latter, formic acid facilitates the nucleation of cloud droplets4 and contributes to the acidity of clouds and rainwater1,5. At present, chemistry-climate models greatly underestimate the atmospheric burden of formic acid, because key processes related to its sources and sinks remain poorly understood2,6-9. Here we present atmospheric chamber experiments that show that formaldehyde is efficiently converted to gaseous formic acid via a multiphase pathway that involves its hydrated form, methanediol.

Dengue virus (DENV), which can lead to fatal hemorrhagic fever, affects 390 million people worldwide. The closely related Zika virus (ZIKV) causes microcephaly in newborns and Guillain-Barré syndrome in adults. Both viruses are mostly transmitted by Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which, due to globalization of trade and travel alongside climate change, are spreading worldwide, paving the way to DENV and ZIKV transmission and the occurrence of new epidemics. Local outbreaks have already occurred in temperate climates, even in Europe. As there are no specific treatments, these vi

With a large global emission rate and high reactivity, isoprene has a profound effect upon atmospheric chemistry and composition. The atmospheric pathways by which isoprene converts to secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and how anthropogenic pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and sulfur affect this process are subjects of intense research because particles affect Earth's climate and local air quality. In the absence of both nitrogen oxides and reactive aqueous seed particles, we measure SOA mass yields from isoprene photochemical oxidation of up to 15%, which are factors of 2 or more higher than

Seawater toilet flushing, seawater intrusion in the sewerage, and discharge of sulfate-rich industrial effluents elevates sulfate content in wastewater. The application of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) in wastewater treatment is very beneficial; as for example, it improves the pathogen removal and reduces the volume of waste sludge, energy requirement and costs. This paper evaluates the potential to apply biological sulfate reduction using acetate and propionate to saline sewage treatment in moderate climates. Long-term biological sulfate reduction experiments at 10 and 20 °C were conducted

There has been a lengthy debate on whether the abundance of adult reef fishes depends on prerecruitment or postrecruitment processes; however, we still do not have the ability to predict the magnitude of local fish recruitment. Here we show that the success of the leopard grouper (Mycteroperca rosacea) recruitment in the Gulf of California, Mexico, is determined by the availability of nursery habitat, which in turn is strongly correlated to climate conditions. Observational and experimental studies showed that leopard grouper larvae recruit preferentially on shallow rocky bottoms with brown al

Wetlands are critical ecosystems that support hydrological and climate regulation, biodiversity conservation, and ecological security. However, under the combined pressures of climate change and human activities, global wetlands are increasingly facing severe area loss, functional degradation, and habitat fragmentation. With the advantages including long-term time-series records, broad spatial coverage, and multi-source observations, remote sensing big data provide essential technical support for identifying wetland degradation, monitoring dynamic changes, tracking restoration processes, and e

INTRODUCTION: Food insecurity and malnutrition remain major challenges in Sub-Saharan Africa, driven by climate change and agricultural systems that rely heavily on a few staple crops, including maize, rice, and wheat. The prioritisation of these crops during the Green Revolution has contributed to the neglect of nutrient-rich indigenous grains. Finger millet (Eleusine coracana), an indigenous African cereal, has attracted increasing attention because of its exceptional nutritional composition, climate resilience, and potential for functional food development. This review evaluated the role of

Plant agriculture contributes substantially to global greenhouse gas emissions, yet it also offers powerful opportunities for climate change mitigation. Here, we focus on how to identify and prioritize synthetic biology strategies to reduce emissions and sequester carbon through plant-based interventions. Effective solutions must process large volumes of carbon, be scalable, yield a positive life-cycle balance, and be economically viable, technically feasible, and deployable in field conditions without undue damage to what remains of nature on Earth. Using Fermi estimation, we quantify the per

Urban ecosystems are subjected to high temperatures--extreme heat events, chronically hot weather, or both-through interactions between local and global climate processes. Urban vegetation may provide a cooling ecosystem service, although many knowledge gaps exist in the biophysical and social dynamics of using this service to reduce climate extremes. To better understand patterns of urban vegetated cooling, the potential water requirements to supply these services, and differential access to these services between residential neighborhoods, we evaluated three decades (1970-2000) of land surfa
