Plasma ferritin concentrations: their clinical significance and relevance to patient care.

In healthy persons the plasma ferritin concentration is a sensitive index of the size of body iron stores. It has been successfully applied to large-scale surveys of the iron status of populations. It has also proved useful in the assessment of clinical disorders of iron metabolism. A low plasma ferritin level has a high predictive value for the diagnosis of uncomplicated iron deficiency anemia. It is of less value, however, in anemia associated with infection, chronic inflammatory disorders, liver disease and malignant hematologic diseases, for which a low level indicates iron deficiency and

Immune-mediated thrombosis in myeloproliferative neoplasms: Pathogenic pathways and clinical relevance.

Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are clonal hematopoietic neoplasms characterized by a substantial risk of arterial and venous thrombosis, which remains a major cause of disease-related morbidity and mortality. Beyond abnormalities in blood-cell counts and rheology, MPN-associated thrombosis is increasingly recognized as a consequence of chronic thromboinflammation arising from dysregulated interactions among leukocytes, platelets, endothelial cells, inflammatory mediators, and the coagulation system. The canonical driver mutations JAK2, CALR, and MPL converge on constitutive JAK-STAT signa

Relevance of Quantitative Measures of Beta-Cell Function in Clinical Practice.

<p>Background: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes the progressive irreversible loss of pancreatic beta-cell function, leading to glycemic dysregulation. T1D progresses through stages, beginning with a presymptomatic phase marked by multiple islet autoantibodies (stage 1), dysglycemia (stage 2), and ultimately, clinical (stage 3) and established (stage 4) disease. Although stage 3 is characterized by significant loss of beta-cell function, the remaining reserve can be assessed by measuring markers of residual function, such as C-peptide. Residual C-peptide is asso

Clinical Relevance of BACH1 Expression in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.

BTB and CNC homolog 1 (BACH1) is a redox-sensitive transcription factor implicated in tumor progression, metabolic reprogramming, and therapy resistance in several cancers. However, its prognostic significance and role in therapy resistance in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remain unclear. BACH1 mRNA and protein expression were quantified in resected lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) tissues and matched non-tumor lung tissues and correlated with clinicopathological parameters, adjuvant chemotherapy status, and disease-free survival (DFS). Prognostic value was as

Translational Insights and Clinical Relevance of Glioblastoma 3D In Vitro Models.

Glioblastoma (GBM) remains one of the most aggressive and treatment-resistant brain tumors, highlighting the urgent need for experimental models that can faithfully recapitulate its complex biology. In vitro models are essential tools for investigating GBM biology and for preclinical drug development. Conventional two-dimensional cultures fail to reproduce the three-dimensional organization, cellular heterogeneity, and micro-environmental interactions that influence tumor growth and therapeutic response.&#xD;In vitro GBM models serve as the first step in the translational pipeline, enabling dr

Clinical relevance among optical, ultrasonic, and radiographic imaging in scoliosis assessment.

PURPOSE: Although optical (OPI) and ultrasonic imaging (USI) have each been independently investigated as non-invasive alternatives to radiography (Xray) in scoliosis assessment, no study has yet directly compared their clinical performance. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical agreement and validity of OPI and USI, using Xray as the reference standard. METHODS: Radiographic Cobb angle served as the gold standard for clinical evaluation of two non-invasive methods. The OPI-angle was derived from spine models fitted to digitised surface data based on structured-light, while USI-angle was

Human Polyomaviruses of Clinical Relevance: Modes of Transmission and Associated Pathologies.

Polyomaviruses are non-enveloped viruses with double-stranded circular DNA genome. Currently, 13 members of the Polyomaviridae family have been classified as human polyomavirus (HPyVs). Despite high seroprevalence values have been reported for the majority of the HPyVs worldwide, the main mode of transmission remains to be elucidated, and simple and common routes, such as faecal-oral and respiratory have been suggested. In general, HPyVs are responsible for asymptomatic primary infection, followed by asymptomatic lifelong persistent infection. In situations of severe immunosuppression, viral r
