Auditory nerve dysplasia (AND) can encompass various conditions of the auditory nerve (AN), ranging from true aplasia to hypoplasia. The purpose of this review is to discuss the prospect of cochlear implantation (CI) and subsequent auditory speech rehabilitation for AN abnormality. Studies of different authors when working with this category of children, possible results and methods of diagnostics of the AN condition are presented.

Objective:The aim of this study is to investigate the changes and correlation of tinnitus and depression in adult patients with severe deafness after cochlear implantation. Methods:A total of 166 adult patients who underwent cochlear implantation(CI) were retrospectively selected as the research objects. All patients were investigated by Chinese Version of the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory(THI-C) and Chinese Version of the Beck Depression Inventory-Ⅱ(BDI-Ⅱ-C) before and after operation, and the improvement of tinnitus after operation was observed THI-C and BDI-Ⅱ-C scores before and after operati…

INTRODUCTION: Due to the changes in the indication range for cochlear implants and the demographic development towards an aging society, more and more people are in receipt of cochlear implants. An implantation requires a close-meshed audiological and logopedic aftercare. Hearing therapy rehabilitation currently requires great personnel effort and is time consuming. Hearing and speech therapy rehabilitation can be supported by digital hearing training programs. However, the apps currently on the market are to a limited degree personalized and structured. Increasing digitalization makes it poss

(1) Background: Current indications for cochlear implants (CIs) have expanded to include patients with appreciable low-frequency hearing. However, longitudinal results indicate that only one-third of these recipients retain full hearing preservation. In another words, the remaining two-thirds lose this facility either partially or fully. This points to the need to better understand the impact of cochlear implantation on cochlear integrity. Intracochlear electrocochleography (ECochG) involves the recording of electrical potentials generated in the inner ear in response to acoustic stimuli, and …

OBJECTIVE: While the implications of ossification on cochlear implantation (CI) have been extensively described, there is a paucity of data regarding the fibrotic stage. We examined the outcomes of different insertion techniques for managing intracochlear fibrosis.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review of case series with case-control comparison.
SETTING: University-based tertiary-referral otology-neurotology practice.
PATIENTS: Between 2009 to 2020, 384 patients underwent CI. Of those, 7 patients (8 ears) demonstrated intracochlear fibrosis.
INTERVENTIONS: CI performed 1-4 months following m…

OBJECTIVES: Wideband tympanometry (WBT) measurements show sensitivity to trends in external ear canal/middle ear maturation and changes in middle ear status as a result of different types of dysfunction. This study aims to determine the effects of cochlear implantation (CI) on middle ear status.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a prospective comparative clinical study that has been done in a tertiary referral center. The patients who underwent unilateral cochlear implantation were included in the study. All the participants were under 18 years of age and had congenital bilateral profound sensor…

BACKGROUND: This study was planned (1) to evaluate long-term outcome after cochlear implantation in patients with post-meningitic deafness and (2) to compare the outcome measures with patients implanted for deafness due to other causes.
METHODS: Records of 54 patients deafened as a sequel of bacterial meningitis and implanted at the largest university-based cochlear implant program in Turkey were retrospectively reviewed. Fifty-four age- and sex-matched patients with a similar interval of implant use were selected for controls. Surgical and long-term audiological outcome (in terms of categori…

OBJECTIVE: Analyze changes in osteoneogenesis and fibrosis following cochlear implant (CI) surgery in patients with otosclerosis and compare differences based on insertion technique.
BACKGROUND: When advanced otosclerotic disease extends to the otic capsule, severe and profound sensorineural hearing loss necessitates consideration of a cochlear implant. Histopathological analysis of the human temporal bone after implantation in the patient with otosclerosis may reveal important variables that predict CI success.
METHODS: Histopathological evaluation of archival human temporal bones from subj

OBJECTIVE: In cases of a severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss following head injury, the cochlear implant (CI) is the primary option for auditory rehabilitation. Few studies, however, have investigated long-term CI outcomes in patients following head trauma, including those without temporal bone fracture (TBF). Herein, the aim of this study is to examine CI outcomes following cases of head injury with and without TBF.
METHODS: Audiometric outcomes of patients who received a CI due to a head injury resulting in severe to profound hearing loss at two tertiary care hospitals were analyz

OBJECTIVES: Cochlear implantation (CI) has been successfully used to restore hearing in patients with severe to profound hearing loss. In addition to hearing loss, irradiated patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) also often have chronic otitis media and Eustachian tube (ET) dysfunction. These features may result in difficulties in CI. We conducted this study to review the management options for irradiated patients with NPC undergoing CI. Furthermore, we investigated the results of CI in irradiated patients with NPC with chronic otitis media and obstructive ET dysfunction, accordingly to…

OBJECTIVE: Intravestibular schwannomas (IVS) are uncommon tumors in Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) and are mainly associated with multiple internal auditory meatus (IAM) and cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumors. They usually induce profound hearing loss which can be rehabilitated by cochlear implantation (CI). The aim of this study was to analyze the long-term outcomes of CI during the unpredictable evolution of NF2 disease.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case review.
SETTING: Tertiary referral center.
PATIENTS: Three adults with neurofibromatosis type 2 and intravestibular schwannomas, and who…

OBJECTIVES: Cochlear implants provide an effective treatment option for those with severe hearing loss, including those with preserved low frequency hearing. However, certain issues can reduce implant efficacy including intracochlear tissue response and delayed loss of residual acoustic hearing. We describe a mouse model of cochlear implantation with chronic electric stimulation that can be used to study cochlear implant biology and related pathologies.
METHODS: Twelve normal hearing adult CBA/J mice underwent unilateral cochlear implantation and were evenly divided into one group receiving e…

To demonstrate the feasibility of robotic middle ear access in a clinical setting, nine adult patients with severe-to-profound hearing loss indicated for cochlear implantation were included in this clinical trial. A keyhole access tunnel to the tympanic cavity and targeting the round window was planned based on preoperatively acquired computed tomography image data and robotically drilled to the level of the facial recess. Intraoperative imaging was performed to confirm sufficient distance of the drilling trajectory to relevant anatomy. Robotic drilling continued toward the round window. The c…

Severe forms of otosclerosis known as far-advanced otosclerosis (FAO) can lead to severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss and can justify cochlear implantation. Because of the pathophysiology of otosclerosis, patients implanted for FAO may experience an increased rate of complications, such as facial nerve stimulation or electrode dislocation, and may have poorer hearing outcomes than expected. This retrospective study aimed to compare cochlear implantation hearing outcomes, surgical difficulties and complications in FAO patients versus non-FAO patients. Moreover, we evaluated whether hi…

Cochlear implantation (CI) is a relatively new therapeutic method for patients with severe-to-profound unilateral sensorineural hearing loss. Acoustic signal can stimulate the ear directly, thus patients can gain better binaural hearing. This passage has reviewed the recent researches about CI for patients suffered from single side deafness. It can improve the ability of sound localization and speech recognition in noisy environment for patients, in addition, it may relieve tinnitus to some degree. But the long-term effect and indication selection still need further study.
